In The Purest Form

LP (Item 51100) Cotillion, 1979 — Condition: Near Mint-
Mass Production are definitely in their purest form here – stepping forward as one of the best soul acts in the Cotillion Records roster at the end of the 70s – and maybe one of the hippest modern funk ensembles of the time! These guys have a way of making things sound nice and lean, despite a larger lineup – with a very strong focus on bassline currents, which seem to draw all the other elements into their wake in a mighty nice way! Yet the album's also not a slap-bass affair – as the deeper sounds are used with a nicely understated vibe, and even come through nicely on the mellower numbers – which might be our favorites. Tracks include "Our Thought (Purity)", "With Pleasure", "Next Year","Love You", "Firecracker", and "Can't You See I'm Fired Up". Also includes the great cut "Strollin" – which is a jazzy instrumental with trumpet and vibes, really working together in a tightly jamming groove!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Slave

Show Time
Cotillion, 1981. Very Good+
Wonderful work from Slave – an album that's still got the hard funk of earlier years, yet which also has the group sweetening up their sound in a great sort of 80s groove way! Most tracks kick along with that great rolling bass sound that the group practically invented – and which has ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cotillion, Early 60s/1970. Very Good+
A 1970 compilation of rare tracks from the Old Town label – one of the smaller New York imprints of the early 60s, home to some fantastic minor soul hits, and killer doo wop material! Tracks include "So Fine" by The Fiestas, "Crazy Love" by The Royal Tones, "Chicken ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
An amazing double-live album that's to concert records what James Brown's Payback was to the sound of studio funk! Mary Wells

Vintage Stock
Motown, 1966. Very Good-
A very strong compilation of some of the best soul that Mary Wells recorded for Motown – and probably her only real album for the label. Although issued in 1966, the material hearkens from earlier days at Motown – and titles include "The One Who Really Loves You", "Two ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye

I Want You
Tamla, 1976. Very Good+
An incredible record – quite possibly our favorite ever by Marvin Gaye! The album is quite unique – written by Leon Ware, and recorded in collaboration with him – done as a "suite" of tracks based on themes of passion, joy, and new love – all of which were very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-Heron

Reflections
Arista, 1981. Very Good-
A great little album that's often overshadowed by its hit – the 15 minute "B-Movie", which was sort of an overly-wrought protest piece about how the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was going to turn America into a bad b-movie. Not that that track's bad – although its ... LP, Vinyl record album

Patti Drew

Wild Is Love
Capitol, 1969. Sealed
A fantastic later album from Patti Drew – recorded after her early hits, both as a solo act and with the Drew-Vels in the 60s – and done in a much more mature, sophisticated style overall! Richard Evans did the arrangements – and carries over some of his best Chess/Cadet talents ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

3 + 3
T Neck, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! Warner, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the crowning moments of genius from the great George Clinton – a record that has Funkadelic really finding their groove, in the same way that Parliament were helping push underground funk into both the clubs and the mainstream – while also showing that the P-Funk empire can jam ... United Artists, 1975. Very Good+
A huge moment for War – maybe the group's biggest album of the 70s, but a set that still has them holding onto everything that makes the great! Killer 3LP set that brings together just about every single track you'd ever want from Marvin's early years at Motown! Maiden Voyage
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of ... LP, Vinyl record album
