Duke's Big 4 here are a quartet of jazz legends – Joe Pass, Ray Brown, and Louie Bellson – all working with Duke himself to serve up unique small combo versions of older Ellington full band classics! The mix of piano, guitar, bass, and drums is a bit unusual for Ellington – and Pass especially has this sharply ringing tone that really brings a different flavor to many of the numbers – a kind of stepping, pulsating quality that's even in contrast to his other work from this period. Duke's piano augments the angularity, and titles include "Love You Madly", "Cottontail", "The Blues", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Everything But You", and "Just Squeeze Me". (Cover has a cutout hole, promo sticker, some edge wear, and pen marks.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Vee Jay, Late 40s. Very Good
Rare live material from Duke Ellington – first issued back in the 70s, but undoubtedly recorded decades before! The set's got a nicely gritty feel – that Ellington orchestra approach before they'd gotten too sure of themselves, and had lots of sharp edges – as you'll hear in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

A lost treasure from Lester Young – previously unreleased live material from the 50s, recorded in a style that's a fair bit different than some of his studio work of the decade! A beautifully mellow set of funky grooves, played by Diz with a west coast group that includes Roger Glenn on flute, Mickey Roker on drums, and Michael Howell on guitars – very similar to Dizzy's excellent Portrait Of Jenny album on Perception.
