One of the best records we've heard in years from Medeski, Martin, & Wood – a searing batch of grooves that really gets back to the trio's original brilliance, and which features some wonderful production from the Dust Brothers! There's a lean, hard, and funky sound to the set that struck us a real surprise after some of their recent recordings – a groove that often feels lifted straight off of a 70s funky soundtrack, inflected with some production touches to update the sound slightly, and accommodate a more beat-heavy approach that really helps their style a lot! The album features some guest guitar from Marc Ribot – nice and nasty, in a way that brings a real edge to the tunes – but as usual, it's the blend of keyboards, bass, and drums that push the real charm of the set! Titles include "Shine It", "Curtis", "Ice", "Bloody Oil", "Anonymous Skulls", "End Of The World Party", "Reflector", "Sasa", and "Queen Bee".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Cornell 1964
Blue Note, 1964. Used 2 CDs
A real musical discovery – not just for the fact that the CD represents a previously-unreleased concert by Charlies Mingus – but also because the sounds and styles here offer up a version of Mingus that's almost more adventurous than some of his other albums of the time! The sextet ... CD

Blue Note, 1961. Used
Stunning! This is one of Jackie McLean's best-ever albums, and it's a haunting mix of hard bop and some of the more modernist tendencies that would inform his "new thing" period. Butch Warren plays bass, and he drives the set with an intensity that reminds us of Mingus – and which ... CD

Art Blakey & The Afro-Drum Ensemble

African Beat
Blue Note, 1962. Used
A completely righteous mix of jazz and African percussion – put together by drummer Art Blakey at a time when he was riding high with the Jazz Messengers, but also was willing to work on great experiments like this! The album's years ahead of its time – and arguably opens the door for ... CD

Essential early work by Stan – a 3 CD collection of his early 50s recordings for the Roost label, either under his own name and group, or with guitarist Johnny Smith. The Smith sides only make up a very small portion of the package – as most of the work are by Getz's quartet or quintet ... CD

Jimmy Smith

Crazy! Baby
Blue Note, 1960. Used
One of Jimmy's most classic albums for Blue Note – and a key example of why his solo skills on the organ surpassed most of his contemporaries! The record's got a stripped-down trio group of Jimmy, guitarist Quentin Warren, and drummer Donald Bailey – working through mostly familiar ... CD

Ahmad Jamal

Pittsburgh
