❔
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(NOTE – Vinyl is lightly heated but play is not affected. Cover has a few small blemish spots.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Great stuff! This is the "alternate" version of Michel Legrand's great score to Les Demoiselles De Rochefort – and it's totally great all the way through! The whole thing's nice and jazzy, totally swinging, and has a groove that you don't get in some of Legrand's other work. We've ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elmer Bernstein

God's Little Acre
United Artists, 1958. Sealed
Elmer Bernstein's score for the sexy late 50s film based on Erskine Caldwell's book – done with a mix of southern styles, jazzy bits, and fuller orchestrations! Bernstein's music of the 50s is all just about as perfect as you can get for soundtrack scoring – and like some of his other ... LP, Vinyl record album

A dramatic score by Mancini – but a really nice one, thanks to lots of exotic percussion touches – often played by Emil Richards! Overall, the record's kind of a late 60s take on the exotica of Les Baxter's earlier Capitol recordings – with lots of dreamy tunes that conjure up ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, Mid 60s. Sealed
A fantastic score from the great Armando Trovajoli – one of his few 60s classics to get any sort of circulation in the US – and one of the best! Phaedra
United Artists, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A really dark little soundtrack – penned by Mikis Theodorakis for Jules Dassin's remake of the Phaedra myth! Georges Delerue

King Of Hearts
United Artists, 1967. Sealed
A nice little Georges Delerue score to this quirky and sentimental film from the mid 60s. The tunes are all relatively short – and a mixture of Delerue's usual French-tinged themes with other tracks that have a bit more of a regal composure, in keeping with the performance of Alan Bates in ... One of the greatest soundtracks ever – an archetypal album from French composer Francis Lai, and a record that set the tone for countless other imitations to come – yet which is still the best! Stony Island – Original Soundtrack
Glades, 1978. Very Good+
A sweet set of soundtrack funk – from a film named after one of our favorite streets in Chicago! Although the record's got an approach that's perhaps a bit tighter and smoother than anything going down on Stony in the late 70s, it does manage to share a good deal of styles with the Chi-soul ...
