LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis Mayfield's first solo album after leaving the Impressions, and it's a firey album of political soul that shows just how much he was holding back when he was with the group. The tracks are longer, angrier, more experimental, and a lot more funky. Standout tracks include "If There's a Hell Below, We're All Gonna Go", "Miss Black America", and "We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" – but the whole album's a classic! (Original pressing including the sticker! Cover has some wear.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Love Is The Place
Boardwalk, 1981. Near Mint-
Great post-Curtom work from Curtis Mayfield – a set recorded in LA, not Chicago – with the mighty Gene Page at the helm! The style here isn't that different from the later Curtom years – more in the side of love and life than some of the more righteous themes of Curtis' earlier ... LP, Vinyl record album
Short Eyes
Curtom, 1977. Near Mint-
A great little record – despite the fact that the album was one of the factors that buried the Curtom record label! After the success of Superfly, the company thought another Curtis Mayfield soundtrack would be a sure million-seller – and really went to town on the record. Well, the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Never Say You Can't Survive
Curtom, 1977. Very Good
A great album of mellow soul tracks from Curtis Mayfield – laidback, slinky, and almost to his earlier work what Let's Get It On was to the early 70s career of Marvin Gaye! The album's got a warm, soulful vibe that's totally great – not as all-out funky or politically righteous as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Let Me Be Your Woman
Curtom, 1979. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A bit over the top – and the kind of record that might have bankrupted Curtom in its later years! Linda's very much in full-disco mode, singing to long clubby arrangements by Gil Askey that have more strings and less soul than previous efforts. The one saving grace of the album is the cut ... Curtom, 1978. Sealed
The standout classic from Curtom disco diva Linda Clifford – and an album that showed that Chicago could rival Philly in the clubby groove department! Linda has a proud presence that really matches that of her better-known sisters in the City Of Brotherly Love – and she's singing here ... LP, Vinyl record album
Back Home
Westbound, 1977. Near Mint-
Later Dennis Coffey, but still with some groovy tracks, even though the production's a bit smoother and a little faster than his early stuff. With "Funk Connection", "Back Home", and "Wings of Fire". The guitar's still out front, and the whole thing's written and ... LP, Vinyl record album
On The Case
Chess, 1970. Near Mint-
A full-blown, very righteous offering from Chess to the political cause of Operation Breadbasket! Tenorist Ben Branch leads the large gospel-tinged group – and sax player Gene Barge produces and plays, with a style that's very much in the Chess/Checker bag of the late 60s soul era. Most ... Kapp, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Fantastic harmony soul – in a class by itself! Ruby's lovely voice is right out front in the mix, and she's backed up by the all-male Romantics with a sweet soaring tone that blows away other male/female combos like Gladys Knight & The Pips or The Sensations. This greatest hits includes ... LP, Vinyl record album
Friction
Stax, 1974. Very Good
One of the most fantastic albums ever about cheatin' and runnin' around behind the back of your loved one, and easily the best thing the Soul Children ever did. Totally solid all the way through, and clearly conceived as a concept album dealing with romantic "friction". Includes the hit ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joy & Pain
Capitol, 1980. Very Good
Classic modern soul from the legendary Frankie Beverly! The record's perhaps one of their best remembered – most likely for the killer cut "Joy & Pain", which has a great hook that's been sampled many times over the years. The record also features the wonderful "Southern ... LP, Vinyl record album
Black & Blue
Philadelphia International, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Classic Philly soul from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover!
