Curtis Mayfield's lasting classic – and an album that the world will remember forever! Apart from being his hugely successful entry into the blacksploitation soundtrack field, this album's also a monster set of grooves that includes some of Curtis' funkiest work ever – a record that works as well as a 70s soul album as it does a hip action film score! The track list alone reads as a who's who of 70s funk – filled with gems that include "Pusherman", "Freddie's Dead", "Little Child Runnin' Wild", "Give Me Your Love", and "Superfly" – and the rest of the set is equally great, essential listening throughout!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing with Bell Sound/SF etch. Includes the Buddah inner sleeve. Cover has fold on the flap, but looks nice otherwise.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Curtis Mayfield

Curtis
Curtom, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
A mindblowing solo set from Curtis Mayfield – a record that not only foregrounds all the subtle politics he'd been forging in the Impressions during the 60s – but one that also really has Mayfield exploding as a force to be reckoned with in the studio! The album's a personal ... LP, Vinyl record album

TTF (Today, Tomorrow, Forever)

Today Tomorrow Forever
Curtom/RSO, 1979. Very Good+
A very obscure bit of late Curtom funk, recorded during the time the label was briefly allied with RSO, and when JB/Horny Horns leader Fred Wesley was doing a bit of work for the label! Wesley did a lot of the arrangements on the album, and got an uptempo groove that ranges from Horny Horns-type ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

Climax
Westbound, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
Funky madness from the early version of the Ohio Players! The album features work by the group that was most likely recorded before their move to Mercury, collected here in an album that's right up there with their trippiest work for Westbound. Highlights include the heavy groovers "Food ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mandrill

Composite Truth
Polydor, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
One of the greatest records ever from Mandrill – a set that has the group tightening things up and getting even more funky than on their first few records, but with a vibe that's still nicely loose and spontaneous overall! The set's got Mandrill perfectly balanced between jazz-tinged funk ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Holman

I Love You
ABC, 1969. Very Good
Eddie's masterpiece LP of late sixties soul, with the classic "Hey There Lonely Girl", the title cut, and a lot of other great original compositions. The sound on here is perfect, and nearly every cut shines. There's almost no filler, and Eddie's voice is strong, beautiful, and has a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Jarreau

We Got By
Warner, 1975. Very Good
Al's first major label record – cut when he was an emerging soul jazz vocalist, but before he'd gone totally over the top in super-slick hit mode. The album's got a good 70s LA jazzy backing, with guests like Dave Grusin, Arthur Adams, and Larry Bunker keeping the music moving at a nice pace. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Barry White

No Limit On Love
Supremacy, 1974. Very Good
A record of tracks recorded before Barry White's superstar years – but released during them to cash in on his big success. The work's still pretty good, though – and it's interesting to hear Barry working in an earlier mode than his slick 70s work. Some material features Barry singing ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good
A great little album by The Drifters – different than most of their other work for Atlantic, but still quite nice! The bulk of the album features the group running through jazzy versions of pop tunes – like "Quando Quando Quando", "More", "The Good Life", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Love Unlimited Orchestra

Rhapsody In White
20th Century, 1973. Very Good
A beautiful swirling instrumental LP that features the classic "Love's Theme", the cut that made Barry a multi-millionaire, and which firmly established his sophisticated orchestral soul style as one of the trademarks of the 70s! This is the ultimate in 70s soul class – from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Mellow Madness
A&M, 1973. Very Good+
A really great, oft-overlooked album from the best period of Quincy Jones! This album is quite possibly Quincy's most farthest-reaching – as he works in an array of styles that really shows his growing genius in the studio – not just jazz and soundtrack modes, but more soul-based ones, ...
