Rugolomania

LP (Item 31814) Columbia, 1955 — Condition: Near Mint-
Originally: 9.99
Pete Rugolo first came into prominence with Stan Kenton's group of the late 40s/early 50s – and he had a penchant for creating arrangements that dipped heavily into modernism, but never forgot to swing. He went on to do some fantastic arranging works for the likes of June Christy and The Four Freshman – but also managed to cut a few great albums on his own over the years! Rugolo's work for Columbia featured groups that were filled with excellent west coast players, and in a manner that was similar to (but more interesting than) the work of Kenton, Rugolo gave ample space to the skillful soloists in the band. This album's his first for the label, and includes the tracks "Montevideo", "Bobbin With Bob", "Me Next", "4:20 am", and "Hornorama".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono 6 Eye pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and aging, small splits in the top seam, center split in the bottom seam, and some faded pencil and small spots of adhesive in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pete Rugolo

Rhythm Meets Rugolo
Mercury, 1959. Near Mint-
LP...$9.99 14.99
A real groover from the great Pete Rugolo – an album cut with an extra emphasis on the rhythm section, and a really jazzy feel! There's still some of the Kenton-modern touches of Rugolo's other work on the set, but overall, the tracks are a bit longer than usual, and done with a good array ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pete Rugolo

Brass In Hi Fi
Mercury, 1957. Very Good
One of the excellent albums that Pete Rugolo made away from the company of Stan Kenton, for who he did most of his most famous work. Although the title says "brass", this isn't a loud swinging record in the Billy May sort of way. Instead, Rugolo arranges a haunting set of jazz tracks as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Horn

Inside II
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
Paul Horn follows up his Inside The Taj Majal set – in someways leaving behind the stark, spare initimacy of that set for a more layered and tailored approach – and also leaving behind his more pronounced jazz roots for a more earthy and nature themed mode! Like Inside, it's a solo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wilbert Longmire

With All My Love
Tappan Zee/Columbia, 1980. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sweet later work from guitarist Wilbert Longmire – a warm mixture of soul and funky jazz – and easily one of the better records to come from the Tappan Zee label at the time! Production is by Bob James and Jay Chattaway – with an R&B-inflected vibe that's a bit like some of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mahavishnu Orchestra

Visions Of The Emerald Beyond
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Very spacey work from Mahavishnu Orchestra – a set that continues the change in sound explored by the second incarnation of the group – one that's much more spacious than the first! The group here is somewhat large, but often comes off with a good sense of leanness at times – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Evans with George Russell

Living Time
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+
One of the most compelling Bill Evans albums of the 70s – a set that has him teaming up with arranger George Russell in a unique 8 part "Living Time" suite – on which Evans plays both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes! The sound is complex, with distinct modern tones – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coleman Hawkins & Clark Terry

Back In Bean's Bag
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good+
A way different album than usual for both tenor giant Coleman Hawkins, and up-and-coming trumpet talent Clark Terry – a very soulful set that falls much more into the spirit of the few soul jazz gems on early 60s Epic/Columbia Records! This could be because Dave Bailey's holding down the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Weather Report

Heavy Weather
Columbia, 1977. Near Mint-
One of the biggest hits ever for Weather Report – thanks to Joe Zawinul's leadoff track "Birdland" – one of those tunes that entered the canon immediately, and saw countless covers pop up over the years – kind of a rare thing for a jazz tune at this point in time! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Star People
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint-
Miles Davis in the early 80s – but still sounding pretty darn great, and somehow managing to take some of his best elements from the 70s and refine them into a slightly more focused groove! The tracks here are shorter than before – no side-long jams at all – but they definitely ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Maiden Voyage
Cadet, 1968. Very Good
One of the key records from the Cadet/Concept scene in late 60s Chicago – a tremendous collaboration between pianist Ramsey Lewis and arranger Charles Stepney – and the kind of record that took soul and jazz to a whole new level! Ramsey on his own is great enough at this point – ... LP, Vinyl record album
