Storm Warning

LP (Item 2799) Milestone, 1977 — Condition: Very Good+
Recorded after his classic work with Larry Mizell, and produced by Johnny himself, but still trying to be very much in the Mizell-sounding vein! The group includes Carol Kaye on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, Ndugu on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion – and while the album is as over-the-top fantastic as Johnny's Gears LP, it's still a nice batch of California funky fusion tracks. Titles include "Lonely Dreamer", "Lady Smooth", "California Lovers", and "Quiet Storm".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Wild Horses Rock Steady
Kudu, 1971. Very Good
Excellent Kudu work from one of the greatest organists of the 70s – a player who really stretched out and opened up his groove during the decade! Johnny Hammond was also known as Johnny Hammond Smith back in the 60s – but by the time of his legendary run at Kudu/CTI, he'd hit a much ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hammond

Breakout
Kudu, 1971. Very Good
A massive groover from the great Johnny Hammond – the famous 60s organist from the soul jazz scene, getting a whole new sound for the 70s here on the CTI label! Johnny was always one of those players who was ready to try something new – and the open, extended format of the label really ... LP, Vinyl record album
Milestone, 1972. Near Mint-
A great mix of electric modes from Paul Bley – working here on Fender Rhodes and Arp, plus a bit of acoustic piano as well! McCoy Tyner

Trident
Milestone, 1975. Very Good+
A nice 70s trio side with Tyner's lyrical, spiraling piano lines nicely underpinned by Elvin Jones' polyrhythms and Ron Carter's supple bass. Three Tyner originals: "Celestial Chant", "Elvin (Sir) Jones" and "Land Of The Lonely", plus Trane's "Impressions", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jim Hall/Ron Carter

Alone Together
Milestone, 1972. Very Good+
The title's an apt one, as the session features spare, unaccompanied duets between guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ron Carter – done at a time when both players were stepping into some of their warmest, most sensitive years. Hall's especially great here – and even though he had already ... LP, Vinyl record album
Milestone, 1972. Near Mint-
An overlooked gem from Rollins – and a record that has him playing with a bit of an electric feel, in a style that's similar to some of Joe Henderson's early 70s Milestone sessions! A 2LP collection of material originally recorded for radio on acetates, then transferred to tape in 1961 and released as 2 albums on the Jazzland label in the early 60s. Milestone, Early 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A pretty cool 2LP set – one that dips back into Wes' early recordings for Riverside, and brings together a bunch of alternate takes of the tunes that appeared on albums like Full House, Guotar On The Go, Bags Meets Wes, and Groove Yard. Players on the tracks include Johnny Griffin, Wynton ... LP, Vinyl record album

McCoy Tyner

Sahara
Milestone, 1972. Very Good+
Pretty darn nice stuff from McCoy Tyner, from a period when he was opening up to the soul jazz spiritualism that was around him – a movement that was clearly directly inspired by his work with Coltrane, but which also helped to shape his playing, and return the favor of influence. The group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nat Adderley

Scavenger
Milestone, 1968. Very Good+
One of the best-ever Nat Adderley albums, and a damn funky set of tracks that has a tight soulful feel! The session's got a similar feel to some of the other rare late 60s Milestone albums (like the 2 killers by Bobby Timmons!) – especially in that it's got a group that plays with the ... Miles Davis

Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ... Ronnie Foster

Two Headed Freap
Blue Note, 1972. Near Mint-
One of the all-time keyboard classics of the 70s – a completely different album than any other set from pianist Ronnie Foster – done with this laidback, open-ended groove that was years ahead of its time! The album's in some ways a blueprint for some of our favorite jazz-based hip hop ... LP, Vinyl record album
