Live At The Lighthouse

LP (Item 1980) Prestige, 1972 — Condition: Very Good

A real killer from Earland! The record swings incredibly hard, with a tight jazzy groove that sounds like his early work for Prestige from the first few albums. The band includes lesser known players like trumpeter Elmer Coles, alto player James Vass, and conga player Kenneth Nash – but they all groove very tightly, and provide a perfect foil for Earland's soaring solos. Includes a great version of "Moontrane", plus the groovers "Spinky", "Smiling", and "Black Gun".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Charles Earland

Great Pyramid
Mercury, 1976. Near Mint-
One of the most spiritual, soulful albums ever from the great Charles Earland – a set that's almost his answer to the keyboard styles of Lonnie Liston Smith in the 70s – and done with a very spiritual vibe! We love Earland on Hammond – but here he also plays Fender Rhodes, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jaki Byard

Freedom Together
Prestige, 1966. Very Good+
A beautiful bit of insanity that properly displays why we think Jaki Byard is one of the greatest overlooked talents of the 60's! Jaki plays here not just on his usual piano – but also electric piano, celeste, vibes, and even a bit of tenor – shifting wonderfully to match the spirit of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Live! In Chicago
Prestige, 1961/1967. Very Good+
Killer live work from Jug – recorded during the early 60s in Chicago, with just an organ-based trio, and very much in the feeling of the best small-group lounge jazz shows of the day! The material is issued here in a 1967 version, its first release – but the grooves were recorded at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Big Sound
Prestige, Mid 50s. Very Good
Classic Jug, playing in a laidback open-ended blowing session, with other strong Prestige players – like Coltrane, Jerome Richardson, Paul Quinichette, Art Taylor, and Mal Waldron, who always seems to be the driving force between most Prestige sides like this. The album has only 4 tracks, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hammond Smith

Gettin The Message
Prestige, 1960. Very Good
A vibes and organ delight – a rare early set from Johnny Hammond Smith, and a date that features a key appearance from vibist Lem Winchester! Winchester only cut a handful of dates before shuffling off this mortal coil far too soon – and he's a hell of a player, with a richly chromatic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Prezervation
Prestige, Early 50s. Very Good+
The title's not a typo, but a strong reference to the influence of Lester Young on the tenor sound of Stan Getz – especially in these early recordings! The material is right from the end of the 40s – and shows a young Stan really coming into his own on Prestige Records – blowing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don Byas/Ben Webster

Don Byas Meets Ben Webster
Prestige/MPS, 1969. Very Good+
A rare meeting of these two American giants of the tenor sax – brought together at the end of the 60s in Europe, both recording late in their careers, but with a laidback and open approach that's really wonderful! The format here is quite loose – a bit like some of the late hours, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Quinichette

On The Sunny Side
Prestige, 1957. Near Mint-
A perfect example of the great skill that Prestige had for taking a good ensemble player, and putting him into a context that really let him open up in a manner that brought his best points to light! In this case, Quinichette's plucked from Basie's group and put with a tight bunch of soulful ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1949/1950. Very Good
Beautiful early material from Stan Getz – originally issued in the 10" format, pulled together in this full length LP! Players include Al Haig and Tony Aless on piano, Stan Levey and Roy Haynes on drums, and Gene Ramey and Tommy Potter on bass. LP, Vinyl record album

JJ Johnson & Kai Winding/Bennie Green

Kai & Jay/Bennie Green With Strings
Prestige, 1952. Near Mint-
A great pairing of sides by two of the fifties greatest trombone acts! JJ Johnson and Kai Winding are on one side, with a boppish set of tunes, and Bennie Green's on the other, with a tight string ensemble. The music holds little surprises, but there's some nice takes on standards and of course, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lionel Hampton

Please Sunrise
Brunswick, 1972. Sealed
Sweet vibes from the great Lionel Hampton – sounding different here than both his early swing years, and his later small combo modes – and working in a style that has his instrument in the lead over hip Chicago soul backings from the team at Brunswick Records! The album's got a nicely ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Pass

Stones Jazz
World Pacific, 1966. Very Good+
A sweet jazzy take on the music of The Rolling Stones – one that features guitarist Joe Pass in the lead, over some tight backings from the great Bob Florence! Joe's joined by Dennis Budimir on additional acoustic guitar – and both players ring out with a hollow-body sound that's a lot ... LP, Vinyl record album
