Most Minor

LP (Item 17396) Everest, 1958 — Condition: Very Good+
Great work by a player we've always loved – but who rarely gets his due! John LaPorta had one of the sharpest altos of the 50's, but for some reason, his talents were not nearly as recognized as those of similar players like Lee Konitz and Charlie Mariano. His earlier work with Mingus has been reissued over the years, but this obscure 1958 session, cut for the Everest label, has always been darn tough to find. The session's a great introduction to LaPorta's work, and it's also one of his liveliest, in that it has less of the overly-academic tone that sometimes mars his recordings. On this one, he swoops around in sharp brilliant alto lines that are all his own – and which owe nothing to other 50's players, like Bird or Konitz. Great stuff throughout, and with the tracks "Diction", "Buzzin", "Searchin", "Decided", and "Make Mine Rare".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original stereo pressing – vinyl and cover are great!)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Charlie Parker/Everest, Late 40s. Near Mint-
Early bop sides, not led by Miles as you might imagine from this package, but featuring him. We're not entirely certain of the origin of these recordings, but they are at least contemporaneous with the Savoy sides Miles was cutting with Bird, and according to the notes, feature Charlie Parker, ... Ernie Wilkins

Big New Band Of The 60s
Everest, Early 60s. Very Good+
One of the few albums ever cut by Ernie Wilkins as a leader – despite his presence as an arranger on countless jazz sessions of the 50s and 60s! Ernie's got a real flair for a tight bounce at the bottom and unusual horn formations at the top – a style that reminds us a lot of Oliver ... LP, Vinyl record album

Trackin'
Direct Cutting (Japan), 1976. Very Good+
One of the Direct Cutting audiophile recordings made during the 70's, pressed up on Japanese vinyl, and pressed so that it needs to be played at 45 rpm for maximum fidelity. Apart from that geeky sort of information, though, the set's a nice quartet session featuring Lew Tabackin on tenor and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lonnie Liston Smith

Renaissance
RCA, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
A massively sweet groover from Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes – smoother and warmer than some of his earlier albums, with a really soulful fusion vibe – and this perfect mix of jazz, funk, and soul that really takes Smith's music to a whole new level! Chico Hamilton

Dealer
Impulse, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Wonderfully groovy work from drummer Chico Hamilton – one of his hip 60s albums for Impulse, done in a style that's completely different than his work of the 50s! Here, Chico's clearly in love with a modal groove, and also sets things up with more romping rhythms that are upbeat in a way he ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie McLean

Let Freedom Ring
Blue Note, 1962. Very Good+
A young Jackie McLean at the height of his powers – really stretching out here, but never going too far out – a perfect balance between his modern bop of previous records, and his groundbreaking "new thing" jazz to come! The group is a relatively straight ahead one – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wailing Dervishes
Atlantic, Mid 60s. Very Good+
One of the coolest albums ever from Herbie Mann – and a set that's definitely got the vibrant sound you'd expect from its title and cover! A totally great Grover Washington record – and with 25 years behind us, we really now realize how fantastic all the early Kudu sessions really were! Decca, 1970. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
An amazing moment from The Who – and from the UK rock scene in general – as Tommy is one of the most fully-conceived concept albums ever recorded – a masterful effort that's still pretty hard to match all these many years later!
