Sound Of Funk Vol 2 – Serious 70s Heavyweight Rarities

LP (Item 143278) Goldmine/Soul Supply (UK), 1970s — Condition: Near Mint-
A classic set of deep funk – with titles that include "Humpty Dump" by The Vibrettes, "Gator Bait" by Gaturs, "Chocolate Sugar" by Six Feet Under, "Love Got A Piece Of Yur Mind" by 5 Ounces Of Soul, "Funk 1 Tus" by Warm Excursion, "Spin It Jig" by Smokey Brooks, "Screwdriver" by Lee Austin, "Girl Chooses The Boy" by La Shawn Collins, "World" by 1616 BAB, and "Communication" by Billy Baron.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has one slightly bumped corner, but is nice overall.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Universal (UK), 1960s/1970s. Very Good+ 2LP
A mad and funky collection of tunes! This one was put together by the folks at Messin Around – the resident DJ team at London's Jazz Cafe, with a musical vision as far-reaching and soulful as that legendary enclave! The feel of the set is similar to some of the great Gilles Peterson ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chess/Mercury (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+
A really great UK collection – one that brings together some very hip Chess Records material from the late 60s and early 70s, mostly spun together as if you were hearing a British soul DJ serve the tracks up in a club! There's lots of great obscure material here – making the set a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s/Early 80s/2016. Sealed 2LP
Think disco sounds only hit the dancefloors in the 70s? Omnivore, Early 70s. Sealed
Rare funk from the Oaktown scene of the early 70s – most of it previously unreleased! The package is tremendous right from the start – cut from the same Music City cloth as work by Darondo, with an equally rough-edged, messed-up sort of feel – one that goes way past familiar ... Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Near Mint- 2LP
Maybe the coolest entry so far in this excellent series – and proof that the Mr Bongo label has gone much farther in recent years than it ever did in the past! Years back, Bongo was known as a hotbed of Latin and Brazilian music – but the sounds here are also rare funk and soul, other ... LP, Vinyl record album

Even into its 20s, the Ultimate Breaks series is still going strong – serving up a bunch of must-have funk tracks that not only form the blueprint for hip hop in the 80s, but which also stand nicely on their own! Maybe one of the most amazing debut records of all time – not only the record that first exposed the world to Roberta Flack, but a set that heralded so many changes to come in the following decade! Wolfman Jack

Wolfman Jack
Wooden Nickel, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A pretty silly little album, cut by border radio DJ Wolfman Jack, with funky soul and rock backing from southern California! Wolfman talks his way through most cuts – even when he's doing a cover of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" – but the instrumentation is pretty nice on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Average White Band

Feel No Fret
Atlantic, 1979. Very Good Gatefold
A great one that showcases the group's best second suit – their smooth compressed late 70s soul sound – a great evolution of their earlier groove, and one that showed them as a great mainstream soul act! The tunes are a bit mellower overall, but still have a lot of crackle and warmth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Earth Wind & Fire

Spirit
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
A big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul!
