Paint It Black

LP (Item 1390) Cadet, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+

One of the better albums by this great Chicago soul studio group – but all of them are pretty nice! The great Richard Evans is still at the head of The Strings, and the album features solo work by Charles Stepney and Lennie Druss, in a cool breezy Chess/Cadet soul jazz kind of mode. The group runs through jazz standards like "Take Five" and "Sidewinder", plus some pop and soul tracks like "Sunny", "Eight Miles High", "Lover's Concerto", and "Paint It Black". A bit funky, a bit groovy, and some nice instrumental tracks from the legendary Cadet studios!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some light wear, but vinyl is nice and clean.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Soulful Strings

In Concert
Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good+
Given that the Soulful Strings were really just a studio side project of the Chi soul arranger Richard Evans, it seems sort of strange to have them cut a live LP, but the session, recorded at Chicago's London House, works quite well, and has a bit more lively feel than some of their classic studio ... Soulful Strings

Another Exposure
Cadet, 1968. Very Good+
Hip hip stuff from Richard Evans and the gang at Cadet Records! The record is the second outing by The Soulful Strings – a group that kind of started as a studio side project, but who became a surprisingly popular act during the late 60s. The album includes some excellent original tunes by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marlena Shaw

Out Of Different Bags
Cadet, 1967. Very Good+
Marlena Shaw's first-ever album – and while not as all-out righteous as some of her later work, still a really unique record that quickly put Marlena head and shoulders above the rest of the pack! The record's a mix of jazzy vocal numbers and heavier soul tunes – arranged by Richard ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

Shout!
RCA, 1959. Very Good+
Early early early work by The Isley Brothers – an album built around their huge rock and roll hit "Shout" – one of those numbers you've heard a million times, in a million versions, and which you've probably forgotten came from the first trio of Isleys way back before they ... Warner, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
What can we say? Bootsy's on top of the world here – not only The Player Of The Year, but also the most soulful artist in the P-Funk stable, and a master of the smooth, sly, slinky groove that would forever be taken up by bands from LA – both in the immediate soul years and in later ... Chic

C'est Chic
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good
A massive set from the legendary Chic – and a set that has the dancefloor combo coming down perfectly throughout! Bobby Hebb

Sunny
Philips, 1966. Very Good
Sublime pop soul genius from Bobby Hebb – a standout record that really made his career, and a dusty nugget we never tire of hearing! Minnie Riperton

Minnie
Capitol, 1979. Very Good+
Minnie's last LP – or at least the last LP released while she was alive – and a wonderful batch of jazzy modern soul cuts that gives a good indication of the direction that Minnie might have gone in the 80s. The album's got plenty of great guest players – including Minnie's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mandrill

Solid
United Artists, 1975. Very Good+
A tasty set from Mandrill – one of their first records away from the Polydor label, but every bit as great as later efforts for that company, especially Mandrilland. The overall sound is a bit smoother than some of their full-out funky albums – but in a way that really helps blend ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Barretto

Eye Of The Beholder
Atlantic/Fania, 1977. Near Mint-
A really wonderful album from Ray Barretto – more jazz fusion than his usual 70s salsa – but in a way that we really really love! The album's a crossover gem that has Ray working with Stix Hooper, Joe Sample, and Wilton Felder of The Crusaders – a trio who produced the record, ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Shearing Quintet

Shearing Spell
Capitol, 1955. Very Good-
The George Shearing spell – cast out not only over the listener, but over the musicians on the record as well – a really ground-breaking group that shows Shearing's great ear for amazing players! The lineup here is wonderful – with Latin percussion from Armando Peraza and Willie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ipi 'N Tombia

Warrior
Stax, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
Weird album that came out in the early 70s, when Stax was getting their hands into so many other styles of music besides southern soul and funk.
