Cherry Red

LP (Item 13850) Bluesway, Late 60s — Condition: Very Good+
Eddie makes a nice little comeback here – singing in a style that's perhaps a bit rootsier than some of his classic sides, which actually had him working in a more sophisticated jazzy style – but which are still pretty nice, thanks to some good hard soul production. Titles include "Goodnight Baby Blues", "Juice Head Baby", "Cherry Red", "Cadillac Blues", and "Somebody's Got To Go".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Cover has a tiny cutout hole, mild corner bend.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Skip James

Skip James Today
Vanguard, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A fantastic 60s album from Skip James – one that's billed as "Today", circa 1966 – but which has James very much back in the same stripped-down style as when he first recorded for Paramount Records back in the 30s! There's no other instrumentation apart from Skip's acoustic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Spanky Wilson

Doin' It
Mother, 1969. Sealed
A bit of soul, a bit of jazz, and some nice funky touches at the bottom – a killer little set from the great Spanky Wilson! Wilson's got a really unique place in music – at one level a soul singer with enough sophistication to rival the sound of Marlena Shaw or Nancy Wilson – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tangerine/ABC, Early 60s. Sealed
Perhaps the rarest of all Jimmy Scott albums – and perhaps the best, too! Jimmy cut this one for Ray Charles' Tangerine label (it was the label's first) – a fact that's driven home on the front cover, where a lounging sexy couple is reclining in front of a fire with a bottle of wine ... Esther Phillips

You've Come A Long Way Baby
Mercury, 1977. Very Good+
The cover might be a bit "on the nose" – but the album itself has some really nice tracks, thanks in part to production and arrangements by Pee Wee Ellis, who always managed to get the best out of Esther during the 70s! The groove's got a lot top shelf clubby soul and easygoing ... LP, Vinyl record album
Flying Dutchman, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
A tasty compilation of Leon Thomas' work for the Flying Dutchman label – work that's clearly his best over the years, and which retains the original style of spiritual soul jazz that he pioneered with Pharoah Sanders. The groove here runs from open-ended soul jazz to some tighter numbers ... LP, Vinyl record album

Della Reese

One More Time!
ABC, 1966. Sealed
One of Della's grooviest records, and a great little live set – recorded at the Playboy Club in Hollywood, with backing by the soulful Bobby Bryant Quintet.
