Bitches Brew

LP (Item 1189) Columbia, 1969 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
Also available
Miles Davis — Bitches Brew ... LP 35.99

One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark by which so many other records would be judged (and fail) in years to come! The double-length set makes full use of all four sides of the record – expanding the flow (as well as the lineup) of the original Davis modal vision – and using all players to amazing effect, so much so that most players here turn out some of their best recorded work ever! The lineup is virtually a whose who for the sound of fusion in the 70s – including Wayne Shorter on soprano sax, Bennie Maupin on bass clarinet, Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea on keyboards, John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Lenny White and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus Jumma Santos and Don Alias on added percussion. Titles include "Pharaoh's Dance", "Spanish Key", "Sanctuary", "Bitches Brew", "John McLaughlin", and "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mid 70s pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Miles Davis

Orbits
Columbia, Early 60s/1968. Very Good+
A strange one for Miles – kind of a repackaging of earlier work, done in a late 60s cover that has an image of outer space on the front and back! The tracks are mostly from the late 50s/early 60s Columbia albums, and titles include "Billy Boy", "So What", "All ... LP, Vinyl record album

Round About Midnight
Columbia, 1956. Very Good+
Thelonious Monk may have written the title tune, but Miles Davis makes it all his own here – blowing with a subtle moody magic that makes the album one of his true treasures from the early Columbia Records years! Columbia, 1973. Near Mint-
One of the last great records by Charles Mingus – a set of extremely compelling original compositions, played by a fresh group of younger players, plus a few older masters! The record's got a fire and sense of emotion that's missing from a number of other 70s Mingus sessions – and it's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wynton Marsalis

J Mood
Columbia, 1986. Near Mint-
Wynton Marsalis is working in lean quartet formation here – no sax from brother Branford, whose own star was rising – and instead lots more room to really stretch out on his own languid lines on trumpet! The rest of the quartet features Marcus Roberts on piano, Robert Hurst on bass, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Di Meola

Casino
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint-
Casino has a smaller, tighter lineup than some of Al DiMeola's other records of the time, but the overall sound is still pretty far-reaching – thanks to a mix of keyboards from Barry Miles, and a blistering array of acoustic and electric guitars from Al himself! Steve Gadd propels the group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michel Legrand

Castles In Spain
Columbia, 1956. Very Good+
One of the great early albums in Michel Legrand's "travelogue" period – a set done at the same time as his musical portraits of Paris and Rio, and served up with a similar flair for the dramatic! LeGrand Jazz (Columbia)
Columbia, 1959. Very Good
The classic meeting of the great French arranger/pianist with American jazz players like Miles Davis, Ben Webster, Milt Hinton, Donald Byrd, Hank Jones, and others. Jack McDuff

Mellow Gravy
Prestige, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Mellow Gravy is right – an early killer from Jack McDuff, from that time when he was really tightening up his sound on the Hammond, and working with a top-shelf group that really pushed things over the top! All tracks are nice and long with great solos – and in addition to Jack on the ... LP, Vinyl record album
