✈
Tremendous work from one of our favorite funk combos ever – Japan's legendary Osaka Monaurail, easily one of the sharpest, tightest, most soulful groups of the past 20 years! These guys have a really no-nonsense approach to funk – from the top to the bottom, from the execution to the production, from the street to the speaker – with a sound that's one of the few to really get a pure approach to the best funky 45 material of the late 60s and early 70s! There's no hoke, no easy references, no simplistic retro sensibilities – just rock-solid, razor-sharp instrumentation – at a level to match the James Brown band on late 60s King Records – who are clearly an inspiration for the crew. This set's got all their best funky 45 energy firmly intact, but also features a few longer numbers with sweet solos too – and as usual, the vocals are completely unique – raw funk, but with an accented twist that really grabs us. Titles include "Riptide", "The Horse", "Liberty", "Solar Eclipse", "Calinga", "Fruit Basket", and "Determination".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Now Again/Stones Throw, 2016. Used
Not the original Quatermass EP from The Heliocentrics – but material that takes off in an even fuller, heavier direction – and which may well be the funkiest sounds we've heard from these guys so far! The music is stunning right from the very first heavy bassline and sharp drum crackle ... CD

Heliocentrics

13 Degrees Of Reality
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. Used
If this is reality, lead us onward – as the set is a mindblowing batch of trippy psych-funk from The Heliocentrics – even more offbeat and experimental than before, in ways that make the combo the true heirs to the legacy first begun by Stark Reality! The album's definitely funky at ... CD

Pimps Of Joytime

Funk Fixes & Remixes
Wonderwheel, 2009. Used
Brooklyn funky soul combo Pimps Of Joytime – whose eclectic grooves roll in and out of Latin stoked grooves, laidback and feverish funk, and hip hop – a few new original numbers plus some remixes by DJ Vadim, Chico Mann, Nickodemus, Chico Mann and SUMO! Titles include "Bonita" ... CD

New Mastersounds

Shake It
Color Red, 2019. Used
The New Mastersounds shake it strongly here – still with all the great core energy of their classic quartet lineup – but further expanded with excellent lead vocals from Lamar Williams, plus a bit of tenor and trumpet too! The group have always been funky, but they've got a nicely ... CD

Cochemea

All My Relations
Daptone, 2019. Used
You might know Cochemea Gastelum from his work in The Dap-Kings over the years – but this time around, the saxophonist is very much his own man – blowing a version of his instruments that often seems electrified, ala classic Varitone from the late 60s – used in these really new ... CD

Nick Waterhouse

Holly
Innovative Leisure, 2014. Used
Damn deep grooves from Nick Waterhouse – a singer we've always liked a lot, and one who really seems to sharpen his edge here with some great elements from older R&B! Nick's already proved himself to be one heck of a soulful vocalist – and this time around he picks up more grit ... CD

Hi Fly Orchestra

Mambo Atomico
Ajabu (Germany), 2008. Used
The grooviest work so far from the Hi-Fly Orchestra – a set that moves even farther past the sublime territory of their debut, into a really classic blend of soul jazz and Latin rhythms – produced to perfection with a wonderfully solid feel! Instrumentation here is all live – a ... CD

New Mastersounds

Live In San Francisco
P-Vine (Japan), 2008. Used
The New Mastersounds always sound grittier in a live setting – and this album is great proof of that fact! The drums seem harder, the guitar a bit more edgey, and the Hammond let loose even more than before – all flying together on grooves that run a bit longer than some of the combo's ... CD

Maynard Ferguson

New Vintage
Wounded Bird/Columbia, 1977. Used
Maynard really grooves it up on this one – playing with a group that's even larger than some of his early 70s funk sessions, in a style that's got traces of disco and R&B-styled fusion! The set was arranged, conducted, and produced by Jay Chataway – who's going for a nice smooth ... CD
MCA, Late 70s. Used
Excellent middle period work by the Dramatics – recorded after their years at Stax, with a slightly smoother groove, and featuring some great tunes that really sparkle! By this point, the group were hitting a Detroit modern mode – with less of the rough edges of the Stax work, which ... CD
