Mickey MurrayShout Bamalama – And Other Super Soul Songs ... LP
SSS International, 1967. Very Good+ ... $19.99 24.99
A little bit funk, a little bit soul – Mickey Murray was one of the underrated talents working in the SSS label during the company's glory years, and had a sock-hard southern soul style that was really outta site! Mickey first hit big with the tune "Shout Bamalama" – originally recorded by Otis Redding in his earliest years in the studio, but pushed to much bigger fame by Mickey with his classic late 60s recording. This tasty little set is done in a great mix of upbeat sockin-soul and mellower southern burners – all carried off with a depth and level of quality that should have made Mickey a bigger star at the time! Titles include the massively funky "Hit Record", plus "How many Breaks Can One Heart Take", "Got You On My Mind", and the eerie "Lonely Room". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original mono pressing. Cover has a cutout hole, some light ring & edge wear.)

✨✧ Stanley TurrentineJubilee Shout!!! ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Stanley Turrentine's best albums ever – but a record that was recorded in 1962, yet only released by Blue Note 20 years later! The set's a great example of the sheer raw power that Stan had in his tone before it got watered down by his pop-jazz recordings of the later 60s – a sharp edge and way of phrasing that's simply amazing – filled with soulful tradition, yet never prone to any of the cliches of contemporaries like David Newman or Don Wilkerson. The group here is a great one too – a sextet with the amazing Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, punching up some very sharp lines next to stan – plus Kenny Burrell on guitar, Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Al Harewood on drums. Titles are a killer batch of spiritual-oriented soul jazz numbers like "Brother Tom", "Jubilee Shout", "My Ship", "Cotton Walk", and "You Said It". CD

✨✧ Leo WrightBlues Shout ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful record, and one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by alto player Leo Wright! At the time of the set, Wright was really making some excellent records with Lalo Schifrin and in Dizzy Gillespie's group (where they both were working at the time) – and this set is a perfect example of the lyricism and Latin influences he'd picked up from Lalo, mixed with the soulful expression that was common for Dizzy's combos in the 60s. Leo plays flute on about half the record, and he's working with soulful modern players that include Richard Williams, Charlie Persip, Art Davis, and Junior Mance. Titles include "Two Moods", "Blues Shout", "Sigi", "Indian Summer", "Autumn Leaves", and "The Wind". CD

Plenty of echoes of Chess, King, and Atlantic Records here – a late 60s live performance by the Chambers Brothers – but one that's already retro-styled towards modes from earlier in the decade, and styles from the R&B years of the 50s! As with all the group's Vault LPs, the sound here is much rougher than the more psychedelic soul of their Columbia albums – a mode that's plenty darn righteous, and which is presented on live tracks for side one, but which also features more studio material and a few original compositions on side two. Titles include "Blues Get Off My Shoulder", "I Got It", "Shout", "There She Goes", "Seventeen", "Rained The Day You Left", and "So Fine". CD

✨✧ ExcitersSoul Motion – The Complete Bang, Shout, & RCA Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Bang/Shout/RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work by The Exciters – material we totally love to death, most of which is a lot harder-hitting than the group's earlier hits in the 60s! The package pulls together their post-UA recordings for the Bang, Shout, and RCA labels – the first to of which are represented by singles, the last by a full LP and some great extra material from 45s – all of which is really incredible stuff that moves way past any pop soul expectations you may have! Production is by Bert Berns on the non-RCA material, and Larry Banks on the RCA sides – and both producers bring an incredibly hip sound to the recordings, mixing the unique deep soul lead of Brenda Reid with some very groovy backings – arranged by Artie Butler, George Patterson, and Teacho Wiltshire, all of whom bring something unique to the mix. The force of these sides is amazing – almost a revolution in female soul, captured in the history of one group – and the booklet features very full notes on the girls, culled from interviews, and telling the story of their legendary years in the 60s. CD contains all of the legendary Caviar & Chitlins LP, plus lots of singles – 21 tracks that include "Take One Step I'll Take Two", "Soul Motion", "Number One", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Number One", "You Don't Know What You're Missing", "Blowing Up My Mind", "Movin Too Slow", "Turn Me On", "A Year Ago", "You Got Me", "Always", "Fight That Feelin", "Give It All", and "Weddings Make Me Cry". ✨✧ Art FarmerBrass Shout/Aztec Suite ... CD
United Artists/Blue Note, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing 2-in-1 CD – filled with sublime work from the mighty Art Farmer! First up is Brass Shout – a great little album by this wonderful trumpeter – and one that we passed up for years because we were afraid of the words "brass" and "shout" in the title! If you're a Farmer fan, though, don't worry about this being some sort of snoozy "bold n brassy" session – because it's a much more subtle record, and features some excellent lead solos by Farmer, set amidst a larger group arranged wonderfully by Benny Golson! Golson brings a great sense of balance to the album – mixing some larger horn passages with soulfully snapping rhythms, all at a level that still allows plenty of space for Farmer to solo sweetly on trumpet. Other players on the record include Lee Morgan on trumpet and Curtis Fuller on trombone, Percy Heath on bass, and either Philly Joe Jones or Elvin Jones on drums – and titles include "Minor Vamp", "Nica's Dream", "Stella By Starlight", "Moanin", "April In Paris", and "Five Spot After Dark". Aztec Suite is a rare Latin outing from trumpeter Art Farmer – one that has him working with the mighty Cuban arranger Chico O'Farrill! The grooves here are hardly "Aztec", as Chico brings a hip postwar vibe to the session – a blend of American jazz and Latin rhythms that's totally great, and played by an all-star array of players conducted by Al Cohn! Side one of the record features the extended "Aztec Suite" – an ambitious number that begins with modern moments that are somewhere in a space between Stan Kenton and Ralph Burns' experiments of this nature, but which always has Farmer's trumpet as the center focus. Side two features tracks that are a bit more conventional Latin jazz – still played by the bigger group, but with an even stronger sense of swing! Titles include "Aztec Suite", "Heat Wave", "Drume Negrita", "Alone Together", "Woody N You", and "Delirio". CD

✨✧ Sister Rosetta TharpeShout Sister Shout ... LP
Sunset Blvd, Late 1940s/1950s/1960s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic overview of the later genius of Sister Rosetta Tharpe – a key figure in the development of rock, soul, and a number of other styles from that key midcentury moment in American music! Tharpe's a singer with a voice that influenced Aretha Franklin and other female soul artists – and a guitarist with a fast-riffing style that was born in gospel, but had a huge influence on rock and roll – as you'll hear here in a really well-chosen batch of cuts from the second half of her career! The package features two titles from 40s radio broadcasts, but all the rest of the material is from the years 1957 to 1971 – half with Rosetta in front of a larger ensemble, half with just the singer and her guitar. There's a bit less in the way of notes than we'd like, but it appears that much of the solo material is from her live set of 1970 – leaving a mix of other material along the group side of the collection. 30 tracks in all – with titles that include "Can't No Grave Hold My Body Down", "Mansions In The Sky", "Didn't It Rain", "Rock Daniel", "Shout Sister Shout", "This Train", "Precious Moment", "Up Above My Head I Hear Music", "Peace In The Valley", "Is Everyone Happy", and "Vacation In The Sky". Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassGoing Places ... CD
A&M/Shout Factory, 1965. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Herb Alpert's definitely Going Places by the time of this set – and his trademark Tijuana Brass sound proves itself to be a great fit for just about any sort of number! The album kicks off with the wonderful "Tijuana Taxi", a sublimely jaunty tune that almost takes Herb into Bacharach territory – and which is followed up by the even-greater "Spanish Flea" – an ear-popping anthem that's one of the greatest bits of 60s instrumental pop ever recorded! And over and above those two tunes, the album's still got plenty more to offer too – a wonderful array of tracks all given the Tijuana touch, with titles that include "More & More Amor", "Mae", "Walk Don't Run", "Felicia", and "Cinco De Mayo". Herb Alpert's going South Of The Border again in another marvelous set of modern mariachi tunes – taking that wonderful Tijuana Brass sound, and turning it towards a number of familiar hits of the day! There's equal parts 60s instrumental pop and Latin groove in the mix – and the punctuated yet compressed Alpert production really hits some sublime moments. Herb's really finding his own sound here – not just the one that would be used on other Tijuana Brass albums, but also on the genius to come from A&M! Titles include "Girl From Ipanema", "Up Cherry Street", "Mexican Shuffle", "El Presidente", "All My Loving", and "Numero Cinco". CD

Trumpety magic from Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – a record that's known not only for its classic cover of a model dipped in whipped cream, but also for it's tremendously groovy groove! The Tijuana sound is very firmly in place by the time of this set – Mexican-inspired, but compressed down into a sweet little LA groove in that magical A&M way – never too over the top, done in a way that takes a previously-hokey brassy sound, and smoothes it out for the Now Sound generation! Titles include the hit single "Whipped Cream", plus "Taste Of Honey", "Green Peppers", "Bittersweet Samba", "Lemon Tree", "Ladyfingers", and "Butterball". Includes the bonus tracks "Rosemary" and "Blueberry Park". CD

Weldon IrvineWeldon & The Kats Vol 1 (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Nodlew/Shout (Japan), Early 80s. Used ... $33.99
Rare work from Weldon Irvine – a selection of tracks recorded as private studio outings, reissued briefly by Luv N Haight in the early 90s, and then only on vinyl! The style here is much more jazz-based than some of Irvine's soul recordings – a mode that's often all instrumental, and which features Weldon playing more acoustic piano than on his 70s fusion classics – but usually mixed in with sweet electric elements, too – which creates this wonderfully righteous balance in the music! The whole thing's very soulful, with plenty of undercurrents of the RCA years – and guest players include Steve Grossman on tenor, Marcus Miller on bass, Tom Browne on trumpet, and Bobby Broom on guitar – the latter 3 of which all worked with Weldon at GRP, making us guess that some of these 80s sides were intended for release on that label. Titles include "Kundabuffer", "Music Is The Key", "Mr PC", "We Can Try Again", and "Blues For Spike". CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – including "Blue In Green", "Heard It All Before", "It's Funky", "Shopping", "The Sisters", "Think I'll Stay A While", and "Misty Dawn" – all only ever on the Sisters album, making their first appearance here on vinyl. New recordings from Willie Jones – a singer who's been working in soul music since the late 50s – first as a key member of The Royal Jokers, and more recently as a solo artist on his own! Willie got his start in Detroit, but the style here is more deep soul overall – done with a southern tinge that recalls some of the recent revival work by Bettye LaVette or Mavis Staples. Bettye actually makes a guest appearance here – singing with Willie on the track "Without Redemption" – and the set also features guest work from Steve Cropper and Black Francis – on titles that include "Fire In My Soul", "Don't Mean A Damn", "Rollin & Smokin", "Troubled World", "In The Wind", "Reasons", and "The Road From Rags To Riches". ✨✧ Johnny AdamsChasing Rainbows – The Tan Canary – New Orleans Soul 1969 to 1981 ... CD
Shout (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A massive look at the lost years of southern soul singer Johnny Adams – 2CDs worth of music that bring together a wealth of tracks recorded between his initial years on SSS International Records, and his later revival in the 80s on Rounder! These cuts all appeared on much more obscure albums – records issued by the Chelsea, Ariola, and Hep Me labels – none of which ever got much exposure back in the day, but which are wonderfully pulled together here to capture these lost years in Johnny's career! In a way, this material may be some of the best that he ever recorded – as it's got a sense of poise and maturity, but also feels somewhat relaxed and intimate – that stronger sort of sophistication that was bubbling in the undercurrent of southern soul as the 70s moved on. Adams' vocals are impeccable throughout – often crackling with a nice sort of rasp, even when the backings are tight or smooth – and titles include "The Image Of Me", "Chasing Rainbows", "I Can't Believe She Gives It All To Me", "After All The Good Is Gone", "Night People", "Memories", "Stand By Me", "I Can't Be All Bad", "Too Much Pride", "Nothing Takes The Place Of You", "Give Me A Chance", "I Don't Wanna Cry", "Baby Baby I Love You", and "I'll Never Fall In Love Again". Buddah/Shout Factory, 1974/1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great 2-in-1 from Gladys Knight & The Pips – the Claudine and Pipe Dreams soundtracks back to back on a single CD! Claudine is a wonderful mid 70s set from Gladys Knight & The Pips – a soundtrack date written and produced by Curtis Mayfield, who really helps bring a lot of depth to their music! Curtis really helps Knight and the group get out of some of their hit cliches of the 70s, and find some hipper space for the setting of the film – a mixture of some of the mellower tracks that Gladys' always sparkles on, mixed with some badder-stepping numbers that further deepen the groove – and which has kept the album alive over the years, thanks to some key hip hop samples. Tracks include the sublime "The Makings Of You", plus "Mr Welfare Man", "To Be Invisible", "Claudine Theme", "On and On", and "Hold On". After hitting big as a singer on the soundtrack for Claudine, Gladys Knight finally got her chance in front of the camera for Pipe Dreams – a record that featured her both as the star on film and on the soundtrack! The styles here are a bit more wider-ranging than the usual 70s soundtrack of this type – a bit of ballad soul, mellow numbers, and more – arranged by Dominic Frontiere and Michael Masser in styles that are a bit like some of Knight's own albums of the time. We like especially the jazzy vocalesey number "Pot Of Jazz", a nice number that deserves further discovery on a compilation – and other cuts include "Find A Way", "Follow My Dreams", "So Sad The Song", and "Alaskan Pipeline". A massively cool collection of work from the legendary Otis Redding – a set that brings together every single that Otis cut for Stax Records, plus a number of posthumous tracks issued on Atlantic too – each presented here with every a and b-side, all in their original mono mixes too! Even if you've got some other Otis Redding in your collection, the package is still pretty darn essential for a number of reasons – not just because it offers up a lot of overlooked b-sides, or because the mono mixes really give the cuts a new sense of raw power – but also because the package traces an evolution of Redding's music in chronological order, and really stands as a true testament to his big steps forward in the short few years he was on this planet! Plus, the package also has a really unique level of presentation – a 7" book-style jacket, which then offers up full color scans of each single included in the set – so that each page you turn is like handling a piece of vintage wax itself. Loads of great tracks throughout – 70 gems that include "Hard To Handle", "Direct Me", "Ooh Carla Ooh Otis", "Snatch A Little Piece", "Johnny's Heartbreak", "That's A Good Idea", "Nock On Wood", "Tramp", "Good To Me", "I'm Sick Y'All", "Respect", "Any Ole Way", "Come To Me", "Hey Hey Baby", and lots lots more! A&M/Shout Factory, 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Genius, pure genius – a wonderful collection of 22 rare numbers by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – all recorded during the group's years at A&M Records, and including a number of previously unreleased tunes! The sound here is completely sublime – way more than just the simple themes that you might expect from the TJB at the time, especially since there's a fair bit of numbers from Herb's late 60s years, when he was really opening into a wider range of modes explored by A&M Records on their Bacharach, Brazilian, soundtrack, and singer-songwriter releases. The whole thing's a key treasure in our 60s collection of instrumental pop – one that fills in a space we didn't even know we had! Titles include "Alone Again (Naturally)", "Julius & Me", "Happy Hour", "Promises Promises", "Whistlestar", "Killing Me Softy", "Chris", "Popcorn", "Flowers On The Wall", and "Up Cherry Street". CD

A&M/Shout Factory, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
The genius of this set is summed up in the tune "Magic Trumpet" – perhaps one of the best estimations of Herb's talents we could think of! The tune, like the entire album, is a fluid bit of magic that takes an older brass-driven mode into the far groovier styles of the 60s – an approach that fuses all the horns around Herb's boldly stated lead, and slides them all around in jaunty rhythms that are a perfect blend of the A&M groove and an imagined Latin past! Titles include "Freckles", "Magic Trumpet", "Five Minutes More", "Shadow Of Your Smile", "Plucky", "So What's New", and "It Was A Very Good Year". CD

✨✧ Juju (Oneness Of Juju)Chapter Two – Nia (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Strata East/Shout (Japan), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
The rare second album from Juju – the avant jazz collective who'd later morph into funk band Oneness Of Juju, but who still sound pretty revolutionary here! There's a bit more focus than before – still energy that's a lot like the best righteous jazz groups coming out of Chicago or St Louis at the same time, but maybe a bit more direct, too – and really showing some of the stronger spiritual tones that would only blossom more strongly in later years! Reedman Plunky Nakabinde is firmly at the helm of the group – on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – but the set also features great work from Lon Moshe on vibes and percussion, Babatunde on congas and drums, Phil Branch on bass, and Al-Hammond Raul on piano and percussion. The sounds are a bit less Afro-styled than on the Oneness records, but still have all the great spiritual currents – and titles include an excellent version of Pharoah Sanders' "Black Unity", plus the original tunes "Contradiction","Nia", "Black Experience", and "The End Of The Butterfly King". Features two bonus tracks – "Live Revolution" and "Live Revolution Continues". CD

✨✧ Charles MingusModern Jazz Symposium Of Music & Poetry ... CD
Bethlehem/Shout Factory, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album – one of our favorite-ever records from Charles Mingus! The album was recorded in the same breath as his legendary works Tijuana Moods, The Clown, and Pithecanthropus Erectus – and it features the same sort of fire and emotion that made those classics so great. The group alone is amazing – with Horace Parlan on piano, Shafi Hadi on alto and tenor, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and the amazing Clarence (aka Gene) Shaw on trumpet – all getting plenty of room to open up on the album's longer tracks! The work bristles with a sense of imagination and dark energy that Mingus hardly had in his music in later years – and each new tune brings a fresh sense of vision that never fails to astound us! In keeping with the "poetry" title, the album begins with an incredible 12 minute track "Scenes in the City" – which features a long spoken bit written by Langston Hughes about one man's love of jazz and the way that it affects his life in the city – all supported with excellent instrumentation from the group. Other titles are instrumental, and include "Nouroog", "New York Sketchbook", "Slippers", and "Duke's Choice". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Woody N You", "Billie's Bounce", and an alternate take of "Slippers". CD

Columbia/Shout (UK), 1965/1966/1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
The one and only album by this sweet east coast harmony group – a killer little set that has a warmly soaring feel! Van McCoy's the maestro behind the whole set – handling both the arrangements and musical backings – and he gives the group's male/female blend of voices a really great sort of groove! The style's something of a link between Ruby & The Romantics and Friends Of Distinction – but the harmonies are possibly even better than both of those acts – much more in the best spirit of the indie harmony soul scene of the time, with a heartbreaking quality that must have sounded great coming out of the speaker of an AM radio on a hot summer night! Titles include "We're Acting Like Lovers", "For You", "One Of A Kind", "Stone In Love", "Chain Reaction", "Long Lost Love", and "Baby I Miss You". CD also features 4 more bonus tracks – "Danny Boy", "I Believe", "Since I Don't Have You", and "Help Me Get Myself Back Together Again". CD

A groundbreaking album by soul singer Lewis Taylor – his first self-released album, issued on his own after parting company from Island Records! The sound is a blend of compressed rhythm and keys, filtered with Lewis' excellent vocals – deeply soulful, and instantly captivating, steeped in a tradition that stretches back to Marvin Gaye, and which makes him one of the best underground soul singers alive today. Songs are sweet, slow, slinky, and seductive – coming off amazingly well, with a deeply soulful production style that's still years ahead of its time – and which makes Taylor ripe for discovery by US audiences! Toshiko AkioshiToshiko & Modern Jazz (aka Toshiko Mariano & Her Big Band Recorded In Tokyo) ... LP
Columbia (Japan), 1964. Very Good+ ... $44.99
Killer rare jazz material from Japan! Toshiko Akioshi was one of Japan's greatest jazz musicians, and in the late 50s she came to the US, made her name, and married alto great Charlie Mariano. At some point in the early 60s, they moved back to Japan and had a rich influence on the jazz scene in Tokyo – as is ably demonstrated by this LP! The album's a fantastic set of large group arrangements by Toshiko and Charlie – and the soloists (besides the two of them) include some of Japan's greatest players, like Sleepy Matsumoto and Shigeo Suzuki. Just to make sure the whole thing swings, there's rhythm by an American duo of Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb, and believe us, they do everything they can to kick the group hard! We've loved this one for years. Nice titles include "The Shout", "Israel", "Land Of Peace", and "Kisarazu Jinku". Also issued in the US on Vee Jay. LP, Vinyl record album

There were plenty of great guitar instrumental groups back in the day – but maybe one of the greatest was The Champs – a combo who still sounds incredible all these many years later! The guitar solos are fantastic, of course – as is the chomping guitar work in the rhythms – but there's also this sonic brilliance to these tunes too – especially in the way the studio is used as an extra instrument, which makes all the other odd moments on the tunes sound wonderful too – including the occasional vocal refrain or surprising shout! There's plenty of cool piano and some tenor solos too – and this excellent collection features 22 gems by the group – including "Caramba", "Sombrero", "Jumping Bean", "Beatnik", "Red Eye", "Gone Train", "Train To Nowhere", "Too Much Tequila", "The Shoddy Shoddy", "Caterpillar", and their classic hit "Tequila". Brother Claude ElySatan Get Back ... CD
King/Ace (UK), Late 50s. Used ... $12.99
Weird and wild sounds from Brother Claude Ely – a record that has all the power and dynamic energy you might guess from the image on the cover! Claude's a curious fellow – part singer, part preacher – with a style that draws from country, and fits in well with the King Records label material of the time – but which also has Ely working a white gospel mode, while also preaching out at points too – bursting out with message and motivation that are simply mindblowing! The set's got more appeal to fans of vintage hillbilly work than standard gospel – yet it resonates equally with both elements – and this wonderful set brings together some of Claude's classic single and album tracks for King Records, plus some ultra-cool unissued passages too. Titles include "There Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down", "There's A Leak In This Old Building", "Farther On", "Little David Play Your Harp", "My Crucified One", "Stop That Train", "You Took The Wrong Road Again", "Send Down That Rain", "Dip Your Finger In The Water", and "Do You Want To Shout". Fantastic FourGot To Have Your Love/BYOF (Bring Your Own Funk) ... CD
Westbound (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A pair of albums from this overlooked Detroit soul group – back to back on a single CD! On Got To Have Your Love, Fantastic Four are a hell of a harmony group – and one who still hold strong through this second chapter of their career – by avoiding any of the cheaper cliches of some of the groups of the disco generation! Instead, the album focuses on their vocals first, and any sort of grooves second – which makes for some wonderful mellower cuts that really follow the spirit of some of the hippest 70s group soul from Chicago or the east coast – followed by a few upbeat tracks that get handling by Tom Moulton at Sigma Sound in Philly! The balance is great – almost more like some of the best group sides from a few years before, especially Blue Magic – and the ballads really take center stage, and blow us away with the group's deeper currents of soul. Titles include "Mixed Up Moods & Attitudes", "There's Fire Down Below", "I Got To Have Your Love", "She'll Be Right For Me", "Cash Money", and "Disco Pool Blues". On BYOF, the Fantastic Four definitely bring their own funk – thanks to tight help from arranger Dennis Coffey, who also produced the set with a heavy groove that's like his own work of the time! The basslines are stronger than before for the FF – but their harmonies are very firmly intact – and, if anything, the blend of funk and great vocals really makes the album a charmer right from the get-go – especially as they aim more for midtempo steppers than too-upbeat disco tunes that might have them losing some of their charm. The overall vibe is maybe more 1974 than 1978 – and titles include "I Just Want To Love Ya Baby", "BYOF", "Cold & Windy Night", "Sexy Lady", "Shout", "Super Lover", and "Realize". CD

Fantastic Johnny CBoogaloo Down Broadway ... LP
Phil-LA Of Soul, 1968. Very Good ... $14.99
A funky soul classic from the Fantastic Johnny C – a hard and heavy Philadelphia winner from the end of the 60s, and the kind of record that really gave Stax and Atlantic a run for their money! Johnny C's working here with some great hard soul production from Jesse James – grooving in a way that's heavy on the back beat – following in the style of similar late 60s work from Wilson Pickett and Dyke & The Blazers. Like Dyke, Johnny's album has a rolling groove that's a great precursor to funk in years to come – and like Wilson, Johnny's vocals are very on top of the mix – shoutin' and beltin' all the way through, in a really solid sock-soul groove! Titles include the hit "Boogaloo Down Broadway", plus "Cool Broadway, "Got What You Need", "Baby I Need You", "Shout Bamalama", and "The Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1964. Very Good+ ... $34.99
A record that's more than just a set from soulful tenorist Red Holloway – as the whole thing's really an outing from Hammond hero Jack McDuff, done during his mid 60s hot streak for Prestige Records – and at a time when the label was letting some of Jack's sidemen step into the spotlight! The group here is really the usual McDuff combo – with the great Joe Dukes on drums and a young George Benson on guitar – but there's also a few key shifts, too – in that Jack plays a bit of piano on the record, and the group also features a bassist, with Wilfred Middlebrooks handling the acoustic, instead of Jack adding basslines on the pedals. Tracks include "Brother Red", "No Tears", "Shout Brother", and "Something Funny". LP, Vinyl record album

The album has Hooker playing in a number of settings with hip rock and funk players from the California scene – including Steve Miller, Mel Brown, Clifford Coulter, and others – but in spite of the presence of a few younger stars on the record, the album's still very much Hooker's own – down-home and earthy, with plenty of the rawness and heavy mojo that set Hooker apart from the bar blues artists of his time! A sweet selection of sounds from Los Mirlos – a Peruvian group of the 70s, and one who recorded some really far out chica material at the time! The cuts here are mostly instrumental – although the group members also call out and shout along with their grooves – with some fantastic electric guitar in the lead, often taking on a tropical variation of a surf guitar sound from the 60s – but with less echo, and more of an ability to fit right into the lively rhythms! There's definitely a cumbia element at plan in the way the rhythms percolate – kind of that quick-stepping sound that was coming from Colombia, but with lots more freewheeling percussion touches, and nicely weird keyboard lines. All the best elements from that set are still in place – the cool organ, Question Mark's almost-conversational vocals – and the garagey production that makes the guitars sound great. Massive soul from Freddie Scott – exactly the kind of set that has us wondering why he wasn't a bigger star back in the 60s! Freddie's style is very mature – never too polished, yet totally put-together – in a way that rivals other 60s male greats like Jerry Butler and Walter Jackson – both of whom are a good comparison for the sophisticated vibe that Scott's going for in his music here! Backings have a strong uptown soul mode – but also allow a lot of space for Freddie's own expressions, so that the strings really lay back, and the orchestrations never get in the way of his bad self – a perfect balance, thanks to the work of arrangers Garry Sherman, Belford Hendricks, and Robert Mersey. Just to make sure the whole thing swings, there's rhythm by an American duo of Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb, and believe us, they do everything they can to kick the group hard! We've loved this one for years. Nice titles include "The Shout", "Israel", "Land Of Peace", and "Kisarazu Jink". A key piece in US/Japan jazz relations, and a swingin' batch of hard jazz tracks to boot! LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label stereo pressing, in a gatefold cover.)

✨✧ Lee MorganIntroducing Lee Morgan ... CD
Savoy, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Lee Morgan's first-ever recordings as a leader, cut way back when he was just a hip teenager from Philly with a bucketful of promise on the trumpet! The session's a crack hard bop date – with an all-star cast that includes Hank Mobley on tenor, Hank Jones on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – and although the proceedings are a bit rough around the edges compared to some of the Blue Note sets, the album's still filled with a heck of a lot of fire, and like all Morgan albums, is totally worth owning! Tracks are longish, and filled with imagination – and titles include "Bet", "Hank's Shout", "Nostalgia", "That's All", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". CD

✨✧ VariousAcid Classics – 13 Original Acid House Classics From Trax Records ... CD
Trax, Mid/Late 80s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A searing collection of tracks from the second chapter of the Chicago House scene – the Acid House years of the mid and late 80s – a time when the city's music was being felt on a really global level! Although the term "acid" was later mistaken as a drug reference, it's used here to refer to a heavy deployment of analogue synthesizers – in a moogy, noisy, almost sci fi sort of way – one that was years ahead of musical experimentation from Detroit, the UK, and Europe in years to come! The track list features some classics of the early Chicago acid years – and the package features 13 tracks that include "This Is Acid" by Maurice Joshua, "Acid Trax" by Phuture, "Dream Girl (wet dream mix)" by Pierre's Phantasy Club, "Machines" by Laurent X, "Battery Acid" by Six Brown Brothers, "Two The Max" by Adonis, "Got The Bug" by Pierre's Phantasy Club, "Shout" by Jack Frost & The Circle Jerks, "The Acid Life" by Farley Jackmaster Funk, and "Bango Acid" by Mike Hitman Wilson. ✨✧ DioHoly Diver ... LP
Warner, 1983. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the best heavy metal albums of all time! Ronnie James Dio had long been hailed for having some of the finest vocal chords in hard rock before this first Dio album arrived – having led the the obscure but beloved Elf, Rainbow and Black Sabbath in the 70s and earlier 80s – but it's Holy Diver that cements his legend. These days, it's kind of stunning how much he transcends metal cliche, as opposed to wallowing in it. Holy Diver has killer songs, Ronnie's unrivaled vocals and melodies, and the band focuses on crunching riffs instead of silly guitar solos and other elements that overwrought and badly dated so many other metal bands of the era. Includes "Stand Up & Shout", the eternal classics "Holy Diver" and "Rainbow In The Dark", "Gypsy", "Caught In The Middle", "Don't Talk To Strangers", "Straight Through The Heart", "Invisible" and "Shame On The Night". ✨✧ Jimmy, Yoko, & ShinSei Shonagon ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the coolest sounds we've ever heard from the Three Blind Mice label in the 70s – a trio outing, but one that has the players really changing up their instruments a lot over the course of the album's long tracks – never in a way that's too avant garde or improvisational, but which always has the group really reaching for new sounds! Yoko Sumiya plays Yamaha electric keys, mini moog, and a Steinway – and really comes up with this incredible blend of acoustic and electric elements – one that's sometimes offset by these moody vocalizations that are hardly song, but almost another instrument in the mix. Jimmy Shironga plays acoustic guitar and electric bass – and again also vocalizes a bit, but in this strangely offbeat way that's often far from lyrical – more personally expressive overall. All group members seem to shout with enthusiasm at points – especially when Shin Okabe urges them on with drums – as well as a host of other percussion instruments too. There's never any moments that get too out, and overall there's almost a performative feel to the whole thing – with the band changing moods and rhythms a number of times during a single song. Tracks include "Soul Soran", "Gion Shoja", and "Sei Shonagon". CD

Vanguard/Ace (UK), 1963. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An early album of Christmas tunes from the legendary Odetta – recorded in a very spare setting, with only acoustic bass from Bill Lee alongside her vocals and guitar! The style is extremely evocative, and really gets past the cliches of most Christmas albums – and creates a dark tension in most of these tunes that's a fair bit different than the warmer tones of the season you might expect. Lee's bass is especially great – stepping out in lines that often contrast Odetta's own – providing a really dark undercurrent that keeps things interesting throughout. Titles include "Virgin Mary Had One Son", "Somebody's Talking About Jesus", "Mary Had A Baby", "Shout For Joy", "Oh Jerusalem", "If Anybody Asks You", and "Children Go Where I Send Thee". CD

MPS (Germany), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hard-stepping work by Oscar Peterson – a record that's got a bit more of a forceful groove than some of his others from the time, thanks in part to the rhythm section of George Mraz on bass and Ray Price on drums! Peterson's really romping around the keys on some of the tunes – hitting hard with the left hand in a nicely bluesy mode on some numbers, then rolling back to his more lyrically introspective style on others. The whole thing's got a great MPS approach to production that makes the notes ring forth with amazing clarity – and titles include "Blues For Martha", "Greensleeves", "All The Things You Are", "I'm Old Fashioned", "The JAMFs Are Coming", and "Carolina Shout". A nearly-lost relic of 80s groove – and a sharp little side project from Rick James! Process and group are clearly going for a sound to rival the Time on this set – working as a well-costumed group ensemble with a bass-heavy funky groove at the bottom of every track – and their groove is definitely as sharp as any of the big names from the Twin Cities who were topping the charts at the time! And although you might be attempted to dismiss them as a copycat combo, the group actually comes off pretty darn well – with songs that we dig quite a lot – and which have held up surprisingly well over time. An excellent bit of LA pop with a nice bossa groove! Triste Janero were a lost combo that mixed Sergio Mendes-ish grooves with some nice vocalization that's slightly in the vein of Free Design. The overall mix of tracks includes some nice bossa groovers, plus other well selected pop material, given a great reworking with the Triste Janero sound. Light, breezy 60s sunshine pop buffed with a sweet bossa sheen – it's exactly the kind of thing we love around here, and a great big shout out has to go out to the wonderful people at the Rev Ola label for lovingly issuing this lost gem on CD – for the first time ever! ✨✧ VariousHardcore Traxx – Dance Mania Records 1986 to 1997 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 80s/1990s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A massive overview of one of the longest-running house labels from Chicago – the crucial Dance Mania imprint, second only to Trax and DJ International for its huge run of talent! Dance Mania came into being a few years into the first wave of Chicago house, but also kept its dedication to the underground for a lot longer, too – and really helped a tremendous amount of young artists to hit the studio and get their chance at turning out a groove! The label was housed in the upstairs of Barney's Records – an important west side record store and one-stop – and it dedicated itself to tracks that were maybe a bit faster, simpler, and more direct than some of the other house in Chicago at the time – often with a great style of stripping things down to all their best elements, yet still keeping things warm and soulful overall. The package features great notes on the label – and on the great Ray Barney himself (we miss your store, Ray!) – and titles include "7 Ways (club)" by Hercules, "Crazy Wild" by Club Style, "Love Will Find A Way (club)" by Victor Romeo, "Toxic Waste (club)" by Tim Harper, "I'm So Deep" by Vincent Floyd, "Falling (Armando's house mix)" by 326, "Da Bomb" by DJ Deeon, "Ghetto Shout Out" by Parris Mitchell, "Hit It From The Back" by Traxmen & Eric Martin, "The Original Video Clash – Video Class 2 (street mix)" by DJ Funk, "Feel My MF Bass" by Paul Johnson, and "Work Out" by Top Cat. 2CD set features 24 tracks in all! Savant, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title's not a metaphoric one – or at least not entirely so, as this set of original tracks by JD Allen draws strong inspiration from the art of bullfighting – but then also moves on to deeper musings on movement and choice – cast out perfectly by the expert trio on the set! Allen's tenor is already dynamic enough – but it's really set fire here by the bass of Gregg August and drums of Rudy Royston, who propel the original compositions with a deep sense of color and soul that really matches JD's horn – the kind of tenor trio effort that hearkens back to the initial late 50s experiments in the format by Sonny Rollins, but grows to encompass all the changes that have taken place since then! Titles include "Paseillo", "Cathedral", "Suite Of Lights", "Ring Shout", and "Muleta". CD

Just when you thought your Beatles collection couldn't get any bigger – out comes this amazing set with 37 tracks that have never been released before! As you might guess from the cover image, the focus here is on the early years of the Fab Four – and the package features rare BBC performances from 1962 to 1965 – offering up a much more vivid portrait of the initial years of The Beatles than just their studio albums. There's plenty of unique takes on famous tunes, plus some killer covers, and a few unusual entries too – and the package also features a number of spoken passages, with all the charm we've come to expect from the group in their press and film appearances of the time. A legendary album of Memphis soul – and a full length set that helped redefine the sound of instrumental music in the 60s! The record's a monumental follow-up to Booker T & The MGs' huge hit single "Green Onions" – an extremely seductive organ-based instrumental that the band cooked up while just messing around in the studio – and it's filled with other organ-heavy grooves played by this tight Memphis quartet – a group who were just starting out at this point, but already had a sound that's unlike anyone else! The work of Booker T is especially nice – Hammond with a bit more punch than other combos of this nature – backed by some wicked guitar from Steve Cropper, bass from Lewis Steinberg, and drums from Al Jackson. The set features a nice mix of covers and original tunes – with titles that include "Green Onions", "I Got A Woman", "Twist & Shout", "Lonely Avenue", "Comin Home Baby", "Mo Onions", "Behave Yourself", and "Rinky Dink".
