Madame Foo Foo

LP (Item 74431) Groove Merchant, 1972 — Condition: Very Good
Just Sold Out!

LP, Vinyl record album

Rougher and rawer than we're used to hearing Dakota Staton – and a tasty little session done with Groove Holmes on organ! The tunes are mostly standards, taken at a slower bluesier pace than on some of Dakota's earlier sides – and Groove gets in plenty of licks on Hammond, sneaking behind Dakota's vocals, and working with a group that includes Bernard Purdie, Cornell Dupree, and Horace Ott. Titles include "Blues For Tasty", "A House Is Not A Home", "Candy", "Deep In A Dream", and "A Losing Battle". (Cover has a cutout hole.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

United Artists, Mid 60s. Very Good+
An unusual one from Dakota Staton – and almost a bit more bluesy than some of her Capitol sessions! Titles include "Supper Time", "I Stood By", "I Gotta Go", "Hurry Home", and "My Search Is Over". LP, Vinyl record album
Copacabana

An excellent album of tunes recorded in Brazil – featuring a sweet mellow vibe that works very well with Sarah's vocals, done in a direction that we hardly expected her to take at this point! Holy cow! Although some of Leonard Nimoy's albums were attempts to "get past" his Spock career, this one is a full-on Star Trek experience! Nimoy's on the cover, holding a replica of The Enterprise in front of some weird spider web design. On the wax, he's laying down great space stuff ... LP, Vinyl record album

Flying Dutchman, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
The last album in Leon Thomas' classic run of albums for the Flying Dutchman label – and one of the most unique as well! There's a tighter feel here than some of Thomas' more free-flowing spiritual jazz sessions – but the sound is hardly commercial at all, either – and still has ... LP, Vinyl record album

If you're a fan of Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, then you'll dig this set of tracks by the Lambert and Hendricks group with Yolanda Bavan, who replaced Annie Ross in the trio during the early 60's. Classic Verve work by Billie – and an album that probably brought the word "distingue" into the vocabulary of more people than any other use! Gentle Is My Love

A bit lusher, and a bit more pop-vocal oriented than some of Nancy's other Capitol albums – this one has arrangements by Sid Feller, and a rich string-laden sound that's nicely juxtaposed against Nancy's soulful vocals. Titles include "Gentle Is My Love", "When He Makes ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gone For the Day

That's "gone" – as in the way June Christy really sends us – vocals that take us to a place that few other 50s singers could ever hope to reach! June's work here is a masterpiece of melancholic understatement – far less overblown than some of her pop contemporaries, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
