Puerto Rico 68

LP (Item 7431) Sunset, 1968 — Condition: Near Mint-
A nice one by Joe Loco – one of his strongest of the 60s, and a tight batch of Latin soul tracks that has a lot more fire than some of his other records! The group's bigger too – with a crackling sound that's got all the youthful integrity you might expect from a title like Puerto Rico '68. The title cut "Puerto Rico 68" is a great number – subtitled "Camel Hop", and with a strong "Camel Walk" groove. Other tracks include "Chua Chua Boogaloo", "Shing-Ah-Ling", and "Oh Yeah" – and the album also features a cover of "Bang Bang".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Goin' Loco
Tico, Early 60s. Very Good+
Joe Loco was one of the most amazing early Latin piano talents, and in an album like this, you can really hear him go to work in a savage way! A solid groover from Joe Loco – cut in a pachanga style, as you'd guess from the title – but like all of his work at the time, the kind of a session that's really driven by his tight work on piano, no matter what the rhythm! Calypso Dance
Mercury, Mid 50s. Very Good+

A great set of Latin grooves – and despite the "calypso" in the title, this is pretty much a straight Latin album from Joe Loco, and it ranks as one of his best from the 50s. The grooves are nice and straight ahead, with searing percussion, and nice heavy piano from Joe. Who ... LP, Vinyl record album

A nice jammer from the "second wind" period of CTI – and a strong return to Latin jazz for Ray!
