2 early 70s Fela classics on one CD! Open & Close hails from 1971 – and it features 3 long songs, all with an incredibly tight groove. Fela, Tony Allen, and the Africa 70 group forge the sound that would dominate their style for the next 2 decades – mixing bass, percussion, keyboards, sax, and guitar into a heavy heavy brew on the tracks "Swegbe & Pako", "Open & Close", and "Gbagada Gbagada Gbogodo Gbogodo". Afrodisiac is an excellent companion album – issued a few years later, but including tracks that Fela and the group recorded at Abbey Road in 1971, and which were issued first as singles in Nigeria, forming some of Fela's first big hits! Titles include "Alu Jon Jonki Jon", "Jeu Ko Ku", and "Eko Ile".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Barclay/Universal, 1977/1978. Used
Shuffering & Shmiling is one of the tougher Fela albums to find, and it's reissued here with the original cover art, and with the super-extended title cut laid out non-stop end to end. The cut's a very nice groover, and a scathing attack on religion to boot! "No Agreement" is a very ... CD

Femi Kuti

Africa For Africa
Knitting Factory, 2011. Used
Turns out, it DOES run in the family – a great talent for Afro Funk grooves, with the same deeply soulful elements that made Fela Kuti's music so great back in the 70s! This smoker from Femi was recorded at the legendary Afrodisia studios in Lagos – with a nice degree of edge in the ... CD

Jaunty Afropop grooves from Malawi! Pirates Choice
World Circuit/Nonesuch, 1982. Used 2 CDs
Hardly a pirate album at all – and instead one of the first big global moments of fame for the mighty Orchestra Baobob – a Senegalese combo who'd really been honing their craft during the 70s! The album has the group working with all the soulful currents of their early work – and ... CD
