❔
Nobody handled a fuzz guitar better than Dennis Coffey back in the early 70s – and this album's one of his masterpieces of funky instrumental work for the Sussex label – cuts that show just how much command Coffey had of the electric strings after a number of years working in both the studios and the clubs of the Detroit scene! Coffey's work here is between the genres in a really great way – heavier than soul instrumental material of a few years before, tighter than electric guitar jazz funk of the time, and with some of the understanding of new phrasing that the psych years brought in – all served up perfectly on a set of wicked cuts co-arranged with longtime musical partner Mike Theodore. Titles include the classics "Ride Sally Ride" and "Taurus" – the latter of which was his similar sounding follow-up to "Scorpio" and other titles include "Can You Feel it", "Midnight Blue", "Toast & Jam", "Man & Boy", "It's Too Late" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a light stain at the bottom corner.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Segments Of Time
Sussex, 1972. Near Mint-
The only album we've ever seen from this hip Detroit group of the 70s – a harmony soul act who mix sweet vocal styles with a more badass approach – very much at the level of the best Philly or New Jersey acts of the time! Production gets funky and fuzzy at times – with a very ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sussex, Early 70s. Near Mint-
A vocal group classic from back in the day – the one and only full length set issued by The Presidents – one of those east coast groups who really knew how to knock it out of the park! Van McCoy handles the production, and wrote and arranged most of the tracks too – and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ralph Graham

Differently
Sussex, 1974. Near Mint-
Very interesting soul material from this enigmatic singer. Ralph had a righteous approach that mixed larger arrangements with a folksy style – in an overall effect that was a few parts Terry Callier, a few parts late Jerry Butler, and a few parts Grady Tate – but which had an approach ... Betty Wright

Betty Wright Live
Alston/TK, 1978. Very Good+
A fantastic live album from the great Betty Wright – and one of the few recorded documents of the way that classic soul singers would evolve the nature of their songs in a concert setting! Betty's recording for Alston/TK here, but the mode she uses is one that would grace countless ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1964. Very Good
Atlantic soul live – recorded in a great grassroots setting! The performance comes from the Uptown Theater in Philly – as important to that city as The Apollo was to New York – and features a host of key Atlantic Records talents from the 60s, really hitting some hard and heavy ... Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

1957/1972
Tamla, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A nice little live set – recorded in 1972, right at the end of Smokey's association with The Miracles. The set's got some nice longer versions of older tunes, and some relatively complicated arrangements from Thomas "Beans" Bowles. Titles include "Got To Be There", " ... LP, Vinyl record album
King, Mid 60s. Very Good
One of those excellent King albums from James that features a wide range of tracks, done in a wide range of styles – including some wonderful obscure numbers that go way past the "hits" promised in the title. The groove runs from sad ballad soul to heavy instrumentals – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ike & Tina Turner

Ike & Tina Turner Show Vol 2
Loma, Mid 60s. Very Good
A strange little record that's seen life in more than a few releases over the years – this one on Warner's Loma subsidiary! The album is a follow-up to Ike & Tina's first bit live album for Warner – and features Ike & Tina with the Ikettes playing and singing in their usual ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prince

Prince
Warner, 1979. Very Good+
An overlooked record in the grand scheme – which is unforgivable in our book! This self-titled album is Prince's second album, and already his vision is becoming a little more focused, and you can really hear the seeds of his later efforts – a really remarkable, unique, and fascinating ... LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Williams

Dizzy Miss Lizzy
Specialty/Ace (UK), Late 50s. Near Mint-
A key collection of work by Larry Williams – the 50's R&B artist who's too-often written off as a rocker, but who actually went onto have a key influence in the early years of soul! Like Johnny Guitar Watson, another contemporary with whom Larry sometimes recorded, Williams had a style ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Simon

Best Of Joe Simon
Sound Stage 7, Late 60s. Very Good+
A great summation of the best of Joe's early work – which is really some of our favorite! The set brings together Joe's best cuts for the Sound Stage Seven label – some really great tracks done in a sweet 60s southern soul mode, with arrangements by Chips Moman and Cliff Parman – ... Chuck Jackson

I Don't Want To Cry
Wand, 1961. Very Good
A real landmark from soul singer Chuck Jackson – part of a unique wave of male vocalists who really took the music to new heights in the 60s! Jackson's got this way of balancing heartbreaking emotion with masculine control – summed up perfectly in the album's title track, then carried ... LP, Vinyl record album
