On Got To Have Your Love, Fantastic Four are a hell of a harmony group – and one who still hold strong through this second chapter of their career – by avoiding any of the cheaper cliches of some of the groups of the disco generation! Instead, the album focuses on their vocals first, and any sort of grooves second – which makes for some wonderful mellower cuts that really follow the spirit of some of the hippest 70s group soul from Chicago or the east coast – followed by a few upbeat tracks that get handling by Tom Moulton at Sigma Sound in Philly! The balance is great – almost more like some of the best group sides from a few years before, especially Blue Magic – and the ballads really take center stage, and blow us away with the group's deeper currents of soul. Titles include "Mixed Up Moods & Attitudes", "There's Fire Down Below", "I Got To Have Your Love", "She'll Be Right For Me", "Cash Money", and "Disco Pool Blues". On BYOF, the Fantastic Four definitely bring their own funk – thanks to tight help from arranger Dennis Coffey, who also produced the set with a heavy groove that's like his own work of the time! The basslines are stronger than before for the FF – but their harmonies are very firmly intact – and, if anything, the blend of funk and great vocals really makes the album a charmer right from the get-go – especially as they aim more for midtempo steppers than too-upbeat disco tunes that might have them losing some of their charm. The overall vibe is maybe more 1974 than 1978 – and titles include "I Just Want To Love Ya Baby", "BYOF", "Cold & Windy Night", "Sexy Lady", "Shout", "Super Lover", and "Realize". CD

Why did Motown ever let the Four Tops get away? This album was their last for the label – and it's an excellent one, filled with soul, sweetness, and some of the best arrangements the group had in their later years! The soul component is super-high – with tight group instrumentation that reminds us of the best Philly backing combos of the same time, but leaner too – as Dennis Coffey and Wah Wah Ragin are on guitars, Jack Ashford handles percussion, and Leonard Caston adds some nice funky keyboards. The real talent, though, is the group – and Levi Stubbs is in fine fine form on cuts like "She's An Understanding Woman", "I Am Your Man", "If You Let Me", "Nature Planned It", "Walk With Me, Talk With Me Darling", and "Happy (Is A Bumpy Road)". A great soul set from funky percussionist King Errisson – done with a warmly jazzy style that reminds us a lot of work from the time by Ralph McDonald! The album's not as trippy as some of King's earlier records – and he brings in a nice sense of focus to the grooves by working with the Detroit soul team of Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey – both of whom bring Errisson's groove to the dancefloor, yet still keep the funky edges intact! There's a really full-on feel to the record that mixes percussion with fuller horns, strings, and keyboards – plus guitar licks from Coffey that keep some edges sharp – and a bit of female backing vocals on most numbers too. A great little set from Lonette McKee – and much hipper than her later work on Warner Brothers! This Sussex set has Lonette working with Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey – in a cool blend of styles that's slightly soulful, slightly funky, slightly folksy, and pretty darn cool! The recording is early enough not to fall into Theodore disco modes – and it's great to hear him and Coffey reaching for some hip new styles in Lonette's music – with results that vary between righteously soulful numbers, and other tunes that have a slinkier singer/songwriter feel. Titles include "Do To Me", "To Whom It May Concern", "Save It", "I'm Alone", "Message From The Earth", "You Mean A Lot To Me", and "I'm Alone". CD

Valerie sang all the tracks on the album, but she and Nick produced the record together – in a way that really sets the groundwork for their bigger fame to come in the 70s – but much rootsier overall! Paul Riser handles the arrangements, with that great touch that he was bringing to some of the best Motown work of the early 60s – that sense of expanded styles, but never in a way that just rehashed some of the previous Detroit styles, and instead almost reached for some of the more sophisticated sounds coming from the east coast and Chicago. Dennis Coffey handles the guitar solos, Jack Ashford plays percussion, and Joshie Armstead joins Nick and Valerie on backup vocals. The one and only album from Tempest Trio – a sweet disco side project from Detroit funk masters Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore! The trio's got that three-female vocal approach used by many other disco acts at the time – but served up over rhythms that definitely echo the earlier work of Coffey and Theodore – especially the former, given some of the sharply choppy guitar riffs that really make the album groove nicely! But the vocals are hardly an afterthought either, because they step out with some nice leads at time – and give the record a lot more depth than other projects of this nature. There's no knocking Wilson Pickett here – as his funky groove is still right on the money, set up in some sweet Muscle Shoals arrangements, at a level that's right up there with his first recordings for Atlantic Records! Production is by Brad Shapiro and Dave Crawford, who bring in a few slight 70s southern soul touches – but overall, the whole thing's got all the raw, heavy-grooving energy you'd expect from The Wicked Pickett on Atlantic. Some cuts slide into each other nicely – which makes for an album that's really unified – and Dennis Coffey plays some great guitar on the set, alongside keyboards from Crawford and Barry Beckett, drums from Roger Hawkins, and percussion from Jack Ashford. A killer 2CD set – both of the Ruth Copeland albums for Invictus – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Self Portrait – a surprisingly groovy little set, and one of a few outings cut by singer Ruth Copeland – kind of an enigmatic figure in the early P-Funk years! The approach here is more rock than soul, but there's definitely some funky undercurrents too – of the sort that have always made Copeland a favorite with break freaks over the years – thanks to help on the album from Dennis Coffey, Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell, and George Clinton! Ruth arranged, performed, and produced the core part of the album herself – but the production style is surprisingly strong – with a use of space and strings that almost shows a bit of Axelrod influence at times, although more skewed towards the Detroit soul scene that Copeland called home. Titles include the classic "Your Love Been So Good To Me", which starts with a very fuzzy electric break, and "I Got a Thing For You Daddy", which has some great spacey guitars on the intro – plus "Child of the North", "No Commitment", "A Gift of Me", and "The Music Box". I Am What I Am is a second sublime set from Ruth Copeland! There's a bit more emphasis on soul here than the funk of Copeland's previous efforts – but in a way that makes for an even more impressive record overall, especially when you realize that Ruth arranged and produced the whole thing. George Clinton and Eddie Hazel both had a hand in co-writing songs with Copeland – and instrumentation features Hazel on guitar, plus Bernie Worrell on piano – so there's still a key P-Funk link. Titles include the breakbeat track "Suburban Family Lament", the fuzzy stoner funk number "Don't You Wish You Had", and covers of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and "Play With Fire" – plus "Crying Has Made Me Stronger", "Hare Krishna", and "The Medal". A great presentation of the set that finally gave Motown's legendary studio combo their due – the soundtrack to the documentary Standing In The Shadows Of Motown – expanded tremendously for this set!
