Tough

LP (Item 6468) Cadet, 1957 — Condition: Near Mint-
An obscure Art Blakey session from that unusual year of 1957 – a time when the Jazz Messengers had a very striking lineup – with Jackie McLean on alto, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Sam Dockery on piano! The set was recorded in Minneapolis – a further mystery for the date, given that it came out on Chess from Chicago – but the set's a nice one, with long tracks that include "Flight To Jordu", "Scotch Blues", "Transfiguration", and "Exhibit A".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Japanese pressing, with insert – MJ 1017.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

At The Cafe Bohemia Volume 2
Blue Note, 1956. Very Good+
A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group was less of an Art Blakey project, and more of an all-around affair – as you might guess from a lineup that also includes Horace Silver on piano, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Maiden Voyage
Cadet, 1968. Very Good
One of the key records from the Cadet/Concept scene in late 60s Chicago – a tremendous collaboration between pianist Ramsey Lewis and arranger Charles Stepney – and the kind of record that took soul and jazz to a whole new level! Ramsey on his own is great enough at this point – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Wade In The Water
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
Classic pop soul jazz from the inventor of the genre! Ramsey's funky piano is backed by some soulful arrangements handled by Richard Evans – in a really tight style that includes great percussion, electric bass, and an all-out kicking style that makes even the mellowest tunes groove! Evans ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Groover
Cadet, Mid 60s/1972. Very Good
A set of classic Ramsey Lewis recordings with his trio of Eldee Young and Redd Holt, all of which were recorded during the 60s for Argo/Chess, but not released until this set in 1972. Horace Silver

Sterling Silver
Blue Note, 1958/1979. Near Mint-
Excellent 70's issue of a number of tracks recorded by Horace Silver in the late 50's – including some (then) unissued material, and alternate versions of popular tracks, recorded with different bands than on the hit. Highlights include a vocal version of "Senor Blues" (with Bill ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Soapsuds Soapsuds
Artists House, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Ornette's great albums for the obscure Artists House label, and different from the one that he recorded with James Blood Ulmer, which was more of a straight-on Harmelodic work. This one's got him playing a set of tender sensitive duets with bassist and longtime accompanyist Charlie Haden. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Harris

Is It In
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good-
One of Eddie's groovier Varitone albums, and a record that has a very electric sound to it! At times, Eddie's electric sax is so off-beat that you'd think he was playing a synthesizer instead of a sax, but in true Harris form, he always keeps it funky, and even the weird sounds have a great groove ... Pacific Jazz, 1955. Near Mint-
An archetypal record from the west coast scene of the 50s – a sublime batch of lightly grooving numbers from Chico Hamilton's famous early Quintet! The power here really comes from a triad of three players – reedman Buddy Collette, mentioned in the title and playing flute, alto, tenor, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1958. Very Good-
A record that's virtually the blueprint for the sound of Hammond organ and tenor sax in soul jazz– the first of Eddie Lockjaw Davis' great run of cookbook albums for Prestige! The record features Lockjaw's gutsy tenor in a group alongside Jerome Richardson's lighter flute – both ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wes Montgomery

Down Here On The Ground
CTI/A&M, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
Super-dope work from the great Wes Montgomery – set to excellent early CTI arrangements from Don Sebesky and Deodato! The groove is nice and airy – with Wes' guitar floating over the top, yet still present enough to ring out loud and clear on all the tightly plucked notes – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

African Waltz
Riverside, 1961. Very Good
A key early album from the young Cannonball Adderley – an a set that crossed over big, thanks to a mix of strong jazz solos from the leader and very inventive rhythms in the arrangements! The group here is larger than Adderley's usual quintet/sextet lineup – and includes reed work from ... LP, Vinyl record album
