Classics In Percussion!

LP (Item 638056) Verve, Mid 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
Originally: 4.99
A pretty cool record from legendary drummer Gene Krupa – filled with loads of unusual percussion, all played live for the recording – set to arrangements by George Williams that are mighty dynamic! Tunes are sometimes from classical sources, but swung in a completely different way!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo MGM pressing. A great copy!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gene Krupa

Sing Sing Sing
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good+
A tasty early 50s session for Verve – one that has Gene reprising some tunes and a style he used in the Benny Goodman years, but in a way that's more open and laidback – in keeping with Verve's swing-based small group sessions of the time! Even more important, though, is the fact that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Krupa

Drummer Man
Verve, 1956. Very Good+
Kind of a reprise of earlier days – one that reunites Krupa with Anita O'Day and Roy Eldridge, as the group runs through some material from earlier years. Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, Billy Byers, and Nat Pierce – and the set actually swings more cleanly than some of Krupa's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Laurindo Almeida

Stan Getz With Laurindo Almeida
Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the best of the Stan Getz bossa nova sessions – and a record that features the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar – playing with more virtuosity than either Charlie Byrd or Joao Gilberto did on their collaborations with Getz! The record's got a driving rhythm section, with lots of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wes Montgomery

Goin Out Of My Head
Verve, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Wes Montgomery's grooviest albums on Verve – a set that features his smooth chromatic work on guitar set to lively arrangements from Oliver Nelson! Oliver Nelson

Full Nelson
Verve, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
Excellent work from one of our favorite arrangers! Nelson was a super-hip super-soulful genius who crafted some of the best charts in the 60s. Unique Thelonious Monk
Riverside, 1956. Very Good+
The session's billed as "very personal treatments of great standards" – and it's a great twist on familiar material, all given the Thelonius touch!
