An excellent album from funky guitarist Wilbert Longmire – probably his best, in our opinion! The album was recorded in LA with some very hip arrangements from Joe Sample – at the head of a largeish soul jazz group that includes usual suspects from the LA scene, like Paul Humphrey, George Bohannon, Anthony Ortega, and Wilton Felder – plus a young Leon Spencer on organ, who turns out some excellent solos with a very groovy touch! Includes a totally great version of James Brown's "Give It Up or Turn it Loose" – done with a nice little kick – plus takes of "This Guy's In Love With You", "Galveston", "Revolution", "Theme From The Fox", and "Scarborough Fair". (Cover has a cut corner and tape along the seams.)  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Night At Count Basie's
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good
Rare album of organ jazz by the lost Perri Lee trio. Lee was another one of the great female organists around in the early 60's – like Shirley Scott or Rhoda Scott – and she just wails in this live set recorded at Count Basie's nightclub in Harlem. A big added bonus on this album is ... LP, Vinyl record album

One
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark album – not only for Bob James, but for CTI and the Fender Rhodes as well! This is the album where all the magic starts – the first of many extremely successful albums that Bob recorded during the 70s under his own name, and almost the birthplace of the modern hip hop ... Upendo Ni Pamoja
Columbia, 1972. Very Good-
Sublime electric work from Ramsey Lewis! Ramsey's working here with his hip 70s group that included Morris Jennings and Cleveland Eaton, and he's playing some fantastic electric piano – a blend of funky grooves and soulful spiritualism, stripped down into a sound that's one of his leanest ... Live!
Prestige, 1963. Very Good
A killer, and one of three live sides McDuff cut for Prestige during the 60s – a monster session of stretched-out jazzy grooves, with many fine little dancers, and a raw soulful feel throughout! The group's one of Jack's best – as Red Holloway's tenor blows and hollers over the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tough Duff
Prestige, 1960. Very Good+
One of Jack McDuff's first albums as a leader – and a really solid cooker that also features vibes and tenor sax! Given that McDuff hardly ever recorded with vibes again, the session's got a real standout sound that deserves to be heard – as Jack's smoking work on the Hammond comes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Living Black
Prestige, 1970. Very Good
A stone cold live date from Charles Earland – recorded in Newark, at just the sort of club where he got his start! Luminescence!
Prestige, 1969. Very Good
An extremely striking sextet session from pianist Barry Harris – quite unlike most of his other work from the time! New York Is Now!
Blue Note, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
"New York is now" – a pretty bold statement from saxophonist Ornette Coleman, but one that definitely shows his shift in role – from a major force on the LA underground of the early 60s, to an artist who was helping pave the way for a huge wave of growth on the New York ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Grabber
Prestige, 1968. Very Good
One of our favorite albums ever by Willis Jackson – and in fact one of our favorite soul jazz sides of the 60s! CTI, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
