Sure Thing

CD (Item 576164) Riverside/OJC, 1962 — Condition: Used
$19.99 ...

CD

A hip session from Blue – one that points the way towards some of his later work on Blue Note, and which features a larger than usual group arranged by Jimmy Heath. As on some of Heath's other projects from the time, the groove is tight and soulful, but never so dominant as to overwhelm the soloists. Mitchell's the main player, of course – but the rest of the group features work by Heath, Pat Patrick, Jerome Richardson, and Wynton Kelly. Tracks include "A Sure Thing", "West Coast Blues", "Hootie Blues", and "Hip To It".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print 1994 OJC pressing. Booklet has a slight crease.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Step Lightly
Blue Note (Japan), 1963. Used
One of the most obscure records from trumpeter Blue Mitchell – a great session recorded in the 60s, during Blue's classic stretch with Blue Note – but not issued until 1980, and even then, only briefly! The record's a great example of Mitchell's strong capacity to play well in a larger ... CD

Riverside, 1959. Used
A strong early winner from Blue – recorded with an all-star group that includes Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Philly Joe Jones. Mitchell's not necessarily the leader – Benny Golson and Jimmy Heath handled the arrangements – but the group overall is ... CD

Clifford Jordan

Bearcat
Jazzland/OJC, 1961. Used
A monster! This session's one of Clifford Jordan's best-ever – and although it's from the early days, it shows him playing with a sophisticated soul jazz tone that hints a lot at his 70s work, and which breaks him past the tighter bop of his other records! The group's a very soulful quartet ... CD

Joe Gordon

Lookin' Good!
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used
An incredible session of hardbop from early 60s LA – easily one of the hippest and hardest-hitting albums ever recorded for Contemporary Records! Joe Gordon passed away early in 1963, and this album's one of a rare few he made as a leader – but even if it was the only one, it might ... CD

Barney Kessel/Shelly Manne/Ray Brown

Straight Ahead
Contemporary/OJC, 1975. Used
A rare 70s reunion for the Poll Winners trio of Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, and Shelly Manne – one that has them all looking a bit shaggy on the cover, but still plenty darn tight in the grooves of the record! There's a really nice change here from the earlier sound of the group – longer ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1958. Used
Hard-burning early work from tenorist Harold Land – exactly the kind of date that set him apart from other west coast players of the 50s! Although he was part of the LA scene of the time, Harold Land grooved a lot harder and louder than his cool jazz contemporaries – and this album's a ... CD
