Berlin Festival Guitar Workshop

LP (Item 5685) Saba (Germany), 1967 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
An eclectic set of tracks recorded at the Berlin Festival Guitar Workshop in 1967 for MPS – done in a number of different short sets featuring guitarists in a variety of styles. The range of the material is really great – and runs from Baden Powell's breezy bossa stylings, to Buddy Guy's raw Chicago blues, to cool California jazziness from Jim Hall and Barney Kessel's. Some of our favorites on the set are Baden Powell's versions of "Girl From Ipanema", "Samba Triste", and "Berimbau" – but the set also includes "On A Clear Day" by Kessel, "Drinking Muddy Water" by Buddy Guy, "Elmer's Boogie" by Elmer Snowden, "Careful" by Jim Hall, and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" done by Jim Hall and Kessel in duet.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Heavy Saba label pressing!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

At Beethoven Hall
Saba/MPS (Germany), 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
A classic live set that has Don Cherry joining George Russell's group that included Ray Pitts on tenor, Bertil Loevgren on trumpet, and Brian Trentham on trombone. Ray Bryant

Slow Freight
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
A killer album by soul jazz pianist Ray Bryant! The title track, "Slow Freight", is an amazing 10 minute groover that moves at a very slow pace (just like a freight train), and which features some very cool ad-lib talking by Paul Serrano – a pretty groovy touch that really adds a ... A beautiful title for a beautiful little record – one that really does have Weather Report spinning out musical tales in sound – with a free-flowing and soulful sense of energy! George Benson

Bad Benson
CTI, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy ... Gene Ammons

My Way
Prestige, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Gene Ammons gets a great change here – blowing strongly amidst larger arrangements from Bill (William S?) Fisher – who serves things up almost in a Kudu/CTI mode, as larger arrangements envelope Jug's soulful tenor! There's a hip blacksploitation vibe on some tracks – especially ... A lost little cooker from Stitt and Green – recorded at a time when they were working together briefly, with backing by a Chicago organ trio that includes Bobby Buster on Hammond, Jo Diorio on guitar, and Dorel Anderson on drums. Stanley Turrentine

Pieces Of Dreams
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A 70s soulful classic from the mighty Stanley Turrentine!
