Legendary Bix Beiderbecke 1924 to 1925

LP (Item 567985) Riverside, Mid 20s — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
Includes recordings with The Wolverine Orchestra, Sioux City Six, and His Rhythm Jugglers.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet

Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet
Riverside, 1957. Very Good-
Hard to find Riverside LP of this group led by Gigi Gryce running down nice hard bop numbers. There's no dry academic performances here, not that you'd guess that from the line-up, but the title kind of leads you in that direction. Donald Byrd and Gryce are playing nice and hard up front, with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Griffin

Little Giant
Riverside, 1959. Very Good
One of Johnny Griffin's hard blowing LPs as a leader for Jazzland – recorded with a crack lineup that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! This is the kind of work that the term "hard ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk plays the music of Duke Ellington – but as you can imagine, the sound here is quite different than usual! At a time when Ellington was working mostly in large group format for the mainstream, Monk's presentation of his standards in trio format is a wonderful way to unlock ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Freedom Suite
Riverside, 1958. Very Good
A crucially important record in Sonny Rollins' career – one that had him breaking out of the straight bop sound, and emerging as a major power on the tenor sax – one with limitless creative power! The set features Rollins working with only drum and bass accompaniment – played by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Riverside, 1959. Very Good+
Wes Montgomery's first album as a leader – a relatively obscure set that has him playing in a trio with Indianapolis bandmates Mel Rhyne on organ and Paul Parker on drums – a mode that strongly recalls Montgomery's roots in the Indy scene at the time! If you only know the later, famous ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1958. Very Good+
A surprisingly nice set that brings together Clark Terry and Thelonious Monk! Given Terry's bright approach to jazz, it's a bit hard to imagine him and Monk working well together – but at the time of this session, Clark still had a fair bit of an edge – with roots in a number of modern ... Thelonious Monk

Best Of Thelonious Monk
Riverside, Early 60s. Very Good+
As the title implies, some of Monk's finest sides for Riverside, collected when the label was under the umbrella of ABC records. The record's a nice, if brief overview of Monk's pre-Columbia years, one of his most fertile and groundbreaking periods. 6 numbers in all, with a quartet reading of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1938/1940. Near Mint-
A full length Riverside album that brings together two different sessions from the 78rpm years! Side one features trombonist Jack Teagarden working with an octet that also includes Rex Stewart on cornet, Ben Webster on tenor, and Barney Bigard on clarinet – and side two features clarinet ... Billy Taylor

Uptown
Riverside, 1960. Very Good
A pretty great trio date from Billy Taylor – and somewhat overlooked, too! The group features Henry Grimes on bass and Ray Mosca on drums – and the set captures Billy in a perfect spot between his early work for Prestige, and some of his 60s mainstream material – heard here in a ... Chester Thompson

Powerhouse
Black Jazz, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with ... LP, Vinyl record album
