Jorge Ben continues to take his samba soul groove into the future – working here on a sweet 90s variation of his earlier mode, complete with his own wonderfully soulful vocals in the lead! Instrumentation is a bit more electronic, but as with most Brazilian soul from the time, there's a lot more warmth overall than on American work – some rootsier percussion at the bottom, sweet guitar flourishes, and some nice horns too – all to really help Jorge's vocals soar on titles that include "Alcohol", "Cowboy Jorge", "Spiro Gyra Story", "Goalkeeper", and "Princess".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Angelo Noce Santoro

For You
ANS/Pharaway Sounds (Spain), 1979. Used
Beautiful Latin-styled jazz – not really New York or Cuban, but also not Brazilian either – and instead this really wonderful hybrid of sounds that's cooked up by guitarist Angelo Noce Santoro – a player with roots in psych and prog! This album's not any of that, though – ... CD
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. Used
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the ... CD

Ana Caram

Sunflower Time
Universal (Brazil), 1996. Used
A great introduction to the music of Ana Caram – an early session recorded both in London and Brazil – with all the great mix of modes that might imply! The album's breathy and bossa in some spots, but full and jazzy in others – and Ana's equally at home in both settings! Some ... CD

Secos & Molhados

Secos e Molhados (1973/1974)
Warner (Brazil), 1973/1974. Used
Essential Brazilian rock from the 70s! Secos e Molhados were a post-Tropicalia group that drew on some of the work of Brazilian groups before them, and mixed it up with hard rock and glam styles that were coming from America and the UK. The leader of the group was singer Ney Matogrosso, who went ... CD

Maysa

Barquinho
Columbia/Sony (Japan), 1964. Used
A classic album by Maysa – one of Brazil's most evocative vocalists of the 60s, recorded here in a lovely session of bossa tunes that begins with her stunning reading of "O Barquinho"! There's a core jazz group backing Maysa up – and strings and larger orchestrations drift ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1989. Used
The first-ever record in the Luaka Bop legacy – a massive collection of Brazilian grooves that still serves as one of the best introductions to the music we can think of! Most of the artists here are the bigger names of the MPB generation of the 70s – but many are still very under-repre ... CD

Jukka Tolonen

Summer Games
Love (Finland), 1973. Used
A beautiful blend of progressive jazz and folk styles – one of the mellower albums from 70s Finnish guitarist Jukka Tolonen, but a great little set nonetheless! The album's got a warmly organic quality that puts it firmly in the context of some of the Brazilian/fusion experiments from the US ... CD
Because (France), 2022. Used
French disco legend Cerrone has been alive and well in recent years – thanks to attention from a younger generation who've really helped reintroduce the world to the genius of his grooves! The set's definitely got more of a contemporary vibe than Cerrone's 70s music, but all the best ... CD
