Really tremendous work from Memphis Slim – a set of early 50s recordings for Chess Records, most of which have a style that mixes equal parts jazz and blues! Slim's definitely got some bluesy phrasing in his piano, but he also echoes an older generation of jazz pianists too – especially the late 30s boogie crowd. Yet his vocals at times also have some surprisingly sophisticated elements, almost that transformation of blues that took place on the west coast in the postwar years – with singers like Charles Brown or Johnny Moore. We never would have thought to put Memphis Slim in the same territory as that late 40s LA scene, but the sound here definitely has a link – especially when tenor or alto sax come into the grooves. Great stuff all around – and titles include "Marack", "Havin Fun", "Mother Earth", "Slim's Blues", "Really Got The Blues", and "Tijuana". (Orange label pressing in a black & white cover. Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.
The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:
If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
