Best Of Sam Cooke

LP (Item 53950) RCA, Early 60s — Condition: Near Mint-

A stone classic – not just from Sam Cooke, but in the genre of "best of" records too! The set's overflowing with classic singles from the legendary soul singers – almost the perfect record to start with if you've ever wanted to sample Sam's genius – that amazing voice, intimate sense of presentation, and undeniably mature, masculine sound that forever changed the face of soul music! Every track's a winner – and titles include "Only Sixteen", "You Send Me", "Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Having A Party", "Twistin The Night Away", "Wonderful World", "Summertime", "Everybody Loves To Cha Cha", "For Sentimental Reasons", "Sad Mood", and "Bring It On Home To Me".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s pressing in a barcode cover.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A nice little compilation that brings together both sides of Sam Cooke's early work – his gospel recordings with the Soul Stirrers, and his secular soul from a few years later. The package is a great overview of Sam's best recordings in both worlds – with one side of gospel, one side of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Carolyn Franklin

I'd Rather Be Lonely
RCA, 1973. Sealed
Classic soul from Aretha Franklin's hip sister – and quite possibly the most unified of all the Carolyn Franklin albums for RCA! This set's got some great arrangements from Wade Marcus – who blends together strings and soul in that solid way that Arif Mardin was using with Aretha at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Evelyn Champagne King

Smooth Talk
RCA, 1977. Very Good
Wonderfully smooth soul from Evelyn Champagne King – one of her real standouts from the early days, and a tremendous collaboration with producer/arranger T Life! The sound here is upbeat and catchy, but never too poppy – done with a slight hint of that groove that King would hit more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Black & White
RCA, 1981. Very Good
A great step into the 80s for The Pointer Sisters – a record that has them bringing in themes that are a bit more soulful than some of their previous efforts! Rashida
RCA, 1973. Very Good
Amazing work from the great Jon Lucien – and probably his best-ever record! Tymes Up
RCA, 1976. Near Mint-
A really great album from the revived 70s version of The Tymes – a group who draw on a long legacy of harmonies in Philly soul, and who work here in a setting that really brings out their best! The whole record was produced and directed by Billy Jackson – and it's got a Philly/New York ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1975. Near Mint-
Shawne was an obscure Canadian soul singer, and as far as we know, she only ever cut this one LP for RCA in the states. The record has a pretty decent soul diva style, with some nice jazzy touches, and a very stretched out approach to soul singing from Shawne. The overall arrangements have a ...
