Drummer Elvin Jones joins the groundbreaking Oregon trio – and rather than making the set a record that's dominated by the star, Elvin nicely finds the right sort of way to really mix his talents with the group! Jones in the 70s could be pretty dynamic as a leader – but here, he's nicely open, spacious, and loose – slipping in surprisingly well next to the modal elements and global tones of the famous lineup – with Ralph Towner on guitars and piano, Collin Walcott on tablas and congas, Glen Moore on bass, and Paul McCandless on reeds. If you know Jones at all, you'll know what a really special achievement this is for him – another feather in the sometimes-overlooked cap of his real growth after the Coltrane years.
