Robbie BashoSongs Of The Great Mystery – The Lost Vanguard Sessions ... CD
Vanguard/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A never-issued album from the guitar genius Robbie Basho – material recorded at the same Vanguard Records sessions that produced his monumental albums Voice Of The Eagle and Zarthus, and every bit as great as the work that appeared on those records – and as the tracks on Basho's Takoma Records albums from the 60s! The set features Robbie doing a bit of his unusual vocalizations, but in a way that's folded in very strongly with his unusual phrasings on acoustic guitar – although with Basho maybe hitting a more familiar folk style at some moments, even though the lyrics are all his own, and have a mystical quality that really matches his work on guitar. There's a really haunting quality to the whole record, and the vocal tunes could easily have Basho right up there with left-field contemporaries, like Fred Neil on Capitol, or Tim Hardin on his early Columbia years – but, mixed with the longform guitar explorations, create a vibe that's completely Robbie's own. Titles include "A Day In The Life Of Lemuria", which is an unusual piano/whistling tune – plus "The Butterfly Of Wonder", "Thunder Sun", "Song Of The Great Mystery", "Thunder Love", "Death Song", "Night Way", and "Katerei Tekakwitha". Jon BatisteChronology Of A Dream – Live At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Jon Batiste is fantastic here – way more so than we normally give him credit for, and maybe even sharper in a live setting than in the studio! The group works with a mix of jazz, funk, and soul – but very different than Jon's band on TV, as there's deeper, richer elements going on – both in the general colors of the instruments, and in the way that the solos soar out and really give the songs some emotion. The lineup features tenor, alto, trumpet, and lots of nice bottom currents on the rhythms – sometimes funky, sometimes more lyrical – all topped with great piano lines from Batiste, who also sings a bit too. Much of the phrasing and flavor is more modern than some of his other albums – and titles include "Blacck", "Prince", "Pwwr", "Birthe", "Kenner", "Story", "Ordr", and "Higher". Richie ColeAlive At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Muse, 1981. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Richie Cole is a player who really opens up in a live setting – drawing on decades of bop inspiration, and also moving into some hipper 70s-styled grooves as well! This set really shows that aspect of Cole's work – as it's got Richie working with an ensemble that matches his sense of energy nicely – playing boppish one minute, bluesy the next, and in some lively rhythmic modes the rest – a cool little lineup with Bobby Enriquez on piano and Bruce Forman on guitar. Titles include a hip long take of "Samba De Orfeu", done with rhythms that are quite different than usual – plus "Punishment Blues", "Body & Soul", "Alto Acres", and "Yardbird Suite". ✨✧ John ColtraneLive At The Village Vanguard Again! ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used ... $7.99
John Coltrane returns to the Village Vanguard – but his sound here is a lot more far-reaching than a few years before! The album's a great counterpart to the first Vanguard session – as it takes all of the bold, soaring energy of that date, and balances it with the newly introspective sound of the later Coltrane years – plus some of the freedoms learned from the Love Supreme era. The group here showcases the new territory explored by Coltrane – with Trane himself on tenor, soprano, and a bit of bass clarinet (echoing earlier Dolphy), plus Pharoah Sanders on additional tenor, Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Rasheid Ali on drums. The album only features 2 long tracks – an incredibly soulful version of "Naima", and a very firey version of "My Favorite Things", but one that begins with a haunting bass solo by Garrison! CD

Great Jazz TrioGreat Jazz Trio At The Village Vanguard ... CD
East Wind (Japan), 1977. Used ... $24.99
A wonderful live set from the legendary Great Jazz Trio of Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and Hank Jones – one of the group's key Japanese albums of the 70s! As the title implies, the set was recorded live at the Village Vanguard – in a setting that has the trio stretching out even more than on their already-spacious studio sides of the time. Williams is especially nice on the record – light and free on the kit, and miles away from some of his fusion work of the 70s. Jones' tones are warm and soulful, and Carter's bass work is always a treat in a setting like this. The album features a great take on "Naima", plus the tracks "Moose The Mooche", "Favors", and "12+12" – all done in nice long versions. CD

Prime post-Coltrane material from Elvin Jones – featuring his "power trio" style of operation, with one great sax player out front, and Jones kicking it in the back with the bass player! In this case, the sax player is George Coleman – who's really finding a voice of his own in these late 60s years, and really makes the most of the extended space of the album to stretch out, soar, and show off his ever-growing talent for a powerful solo! Wilbur Little is on bass, playing nice round warm notes to offset Jones' edgey playing – and the group's joined by trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson on one track – who brings in a soulful edge that's mighty nice. Resonance, 1966. New Copy 3LP Gatefold (reissue)... $69.99
The birth of a legend – documented here in a really wonderful package – a brilliant 2CD set that brings forth the first-ever recordings of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra – heard here on the debut nights of their very long run of Monday night performances at the Village Vanguard! Right from the start, this group was really something special – formed by the meeting of two legendary talents, trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis – and driven strongly by a lineup of all-star players who were happy to shelve their egos this night of the week, and come together in a unit that was far more than just the sum of its amazing parts. Players on these two nights include Hank Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, Jimmy Owens and Bill Berry on trumpets, Bob Brookmeyer and Garnett Brown on trombones, and Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Pepper Adams, and Jerry Dodgion on a flurry of amazing reed performances – producing the kinds of insane colors and edges the group was always known for! This isn't big band jazz – at least not the sort you'd think of with cliche – and instead, the recordings document the meeting of amazing talents creating effortlessly together under the leadership of two generous giants. The package is wonderful, really a tribute to this amazing music – oversized, and with a huge booklet of notes and photos – and 2CDs with titles that include "Back Bone", "Big Dipper", "Mornin Reverend", "Little Pixie", "All My Yesterdays", "Once Around", "Ah That's Freedom", and "Don't Ever Leave Me". A firey little trio session from Junior Mance – one that features tracks taken at a pace that's even more uptempo than usual, and which really pushes his skills on the keys! The speed of the set is by no means a detriment to Mance's soulful playing – and if anything, the record stands as one of his most compelling from the period – not just a batch of soul jazz styles that were soon becoming cliches, but a vibrant example of the full range of Mance's talents, caught in a very spontaneous setting. Trio members include Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums – and titles include "Smokey Blues", "Bingo Domingo", "Looptown", "Letter From Home", and "Girl Of My Dreams". CD

The debut album from a group who became a seminal bridge on the Chicago scene in the 60s – a blue-eyed blues quartet who got their start on the south side, then helped bring the music up north! The group have an edge here that's sharper than you might expect – maybe in part because the set was issued on the Vanguard label, who really hang on to some sort of folk blues roots, and don't try to polish these guys up too much. But they're also young, gritty, and full of fire – and Corky Siegel sounds better than we remember on vocals and harmonica, next to some mighty great guitar work from the young Jim Schwall! Titles include "Down In The Bottom", "When I Get The Time", "Boot Hill", "Mama/Papa", "Going To New York", "Little Babe", and "I'll Be The Man". Vanguard (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Killer work from one of THE big labels during the psychedelic generation – one of the few imprints to really take a chance on fresh new artists, and really let them do their thing in the studio! Vanguard may be known mostly as a folk label, and the company is now owned by the parent company of Lawrence Welk – but back in the late 60s, the company was very much at the forefront of musical changes in the US – and went out of their way to record artists that nobody else would touch! The result is a stunning legacy of funk records that really blow most bigger label work away – most of which is compiled here in this excellent collection. Some cuts are from rare albums, other from rare 45s – and titles include "Did You Have To Rub It In" by The Hi Five, "Getting Together" by The Third Power, "Where I'm At" by Notes From The Underground, "You Should Be More Careful" by Elizabeth, "Stoned Is" by Listening, "A Nickel's Worth Of Benny's Help" by The 31st Of February, "The Endless Tunnel" by Serpent Power, "Big Time Spender" by Frost, and "Hellhound" by The Far Cry. ✨✧ Gerald ClaytonHappening – Live At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pianist Gerald Clayton live at the Village Vanguard, presented here in two different modes – two tracks in trio formation, with Joe Sanders on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums – the rest with a really wonderful quintet that draws a lot from the work of Logan Richardson on alto and Walter Smith III on tenor! Clayton's piano work has just gotten deeper and more complex over the years – and here, he's a master of moods, especially on the darker side of the spectrum – which can be really balanced in a great way by the hand-in-glove interplay between Richardson and Smith, both players show seem to share that way of swelling up in sound that Gerald brings to the piano. The approach isn't easy to put in words instantly – but we might say that the whole thing has a very resonant quality, something really special and stirring – on titles that include "Envisionings", "Rejuvenation Agenda", "Take The Coltrane", "A Light", "Celia", and "Patience Patients". Impulse/MCA, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublimely spiritual work from the great John Coltrane – a live album, but one that's easily one of his most important contributions to music in the early 60s – and a set that we'd rank right up there with his best studio sides for Impulse or Atlantic Records at the time! The group here features McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – plus the very important addition of Eric Dolphy on the leadoff tune "Spiritual" – a number that features Dolphy on bass clarinet alongside Coltrane's tremendous tenor, as both players open up on extended solos that take the tune to nearly 14 minutes in length! Other numbers omit Dolphy, but are still totally great – and Coltrane picks up the soprano sax for a classic reading of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" – and the group shifts slightly for the freer "Chasin The Trane", a 16 minute romp done with only tenor sax, drums, and bass – the latter of which is handled here by Jimmy Garrison instead of Workman. Sandy BullFantasias For Guitar & Banjo ... LP
Vanguard/Alternative Fox (UK), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Mindblowing minimalism from the legendary Sandy Bull – an artist who might have had acoustic roots in folk music, but who was instantly turning his music into something else – drawing on modal styles of Eastern music, European generations of expression on guitar, jazz-based improvisation – and maybe even prefiguring work to come from composers like Terry Riley and La Monte Young! This album's one of Bull's first, and it's pure genius right from the start – with a side-long performance on the incredible "Blend", which features slight drums from jazz musician Billy Higgins – which Sandy extrapolates these long passages on acoustic guitar. Side two features the fantastic "Carmina Burana Fantasy" on banjo – a kind of trans-historical performance that's right up there with John Fahey's best of the decade – alongside equally mindblowing "Non Nobis Domine" and "Little Maggie" – and the closing electric guitar genius of "Gospel Tune". Larry CoryellOffering ... LP
Vanguard, 1972. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A fantastic record from guitarist Larry Coryell – one that maybe has him shedding some of the more rockish tendencies of his roots, while finding the way forward in a searing, searching style of funky jazz! There's almost a Flying Dutchman sort of righteousness to the record – as Larry mixes the ever-increasing sharpness of his guitar with great soprano sax from Steve Marcus – who himself may well be topping performances on albums under his own name. Bottom energy is driven strongly by Mervin Bronson on bass and Harry Wilkinson on drums – and the group also features lots of great keyboards from Mike Mandel – playing "electric piano with fuzz wah"! Titles include "Foreplay", "Ruminations", "Scotland 1", "Beggars' Chant", and "Offering". LP, Vinyl record album

Larry CoryellReal Great Escape (LP style gatefold sleeve) ... CD
Vanguard/Universe (Italy), 1973. Used Gatefold ... $14.99
Larry Coryell tries out his vocal chops a bit on this album with his classic group from the early 70s – but the main "voice" on the record is still his wonderfully tight guitar – which has a beautifully sharp sound throughout! When Coryell sings, he almost seems to be doing so through the pickup of a guitar – or a least getting processed via pedals and effects – which gives his singing as much fuzz as his electric instrument – set up in a great combo that features work on tenor and soprano sax from Steve Marcus, and a mixture of piano and Arp from the great Mike Mandel. Titles include "PF Sloan", "The Real Great Escape", "Are You Too Clever", "Love Life's Offering", and "Makes Me Wanna Shout". CD

Larry CoryellRestful Mind ... LP
Vanguard, 1975. Very Good ... $4.99
Guitarist Larry Coryell really changes it up from before – shedding both some of his electric modes and his vocal inclinations – and also working with a completely different group, who give the record a very unusual sound! Coryell plays a lot of acoustic guitar here, in addition to some electric – and the group also features additional guitar from Ralph Towner – whose open, airy approach really shapes the sound in a different way – but, alongside Larry, also has more force than on his own ECM recordings. The group also features Glen Moore on acoustic bass – but the real highlight may well be Collin Wolcott, who plays tablas and congas – bringing in earthy, global elements that really make some of the best moments shine. Titles include "Julie La Belle", "Song For Jim Webb", "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Ann Arbor", and some improvisations on music by Robert De Visee. LP, Vinyl record album

John FaheyEssential John Fahey (Yellow Princess/Requia) ... LP
Vanguard, 1974. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
A great pairing of two key John Fahey albums from the 60s! Yellow Princess is an album as lovely as its title, and John Fahey's 8th record – mostly solo guitar, but with guest drums and bass on 2 cuts – "March For Martin Luther King" and "Dance of The Inhabitants Of The Invisible City Of Bladensburg". The sound is extremely magical – introspective, yet far-seeing – with that fragile sense of being in the world that's made Fahey's work endure far longer than that of most of his contemporaries. Other titles include "Irish Setter", "Commemorative Transfiguration & Communion At Magruder Park", and "Lion". Requia is excellent work by Fahey – all solo, and featuring some wonderful production on the guitar that brings out all the brilliance of his warm chromatic playing. Side one features "Requiem For John Hurt", "Requiem For Russell Blaine Cooper", and "When The Catfish Is In Bloom" – and side two features the four-part "Requiem for Molly", which has Fahey's guitar over some very cool effects! Family Of ApostolicFamily Of Apostolic ... CD
Vanguard/Future Days, 1968. New Copy Gatefold ... $6.99 14.98
A beautifully trippy record – recorded by a loose collective of musicians and singers brought together around the scene at Apostolic Studios, in a relaxed setting that makes for some of the most offbeat sounds you'll ever hear on the Vanguard label in the 60s! There's more of a Fugs/ESP vibe than Vanguard's usual folk or psych – and the whole thing almost comes across more like a "happening" than a record – with shifting styles, shifting participants, and a mix of modes that runs from folk, to acoustic psych, and embraces global elements too – as the instrumentation moves between guitars, piano, harmonium, oud, organ, chimes, mandolin, and many more instrumental elements. Singers shift nicely, too – and the credits even list some participants as playing water, and also coughing, sniffling, and yawning too. Lyrics are nicely hippy-dippy –optimistic, with almost child-like sense of innocence – and titles include "Devil's Yard", "Down The Road", "Zoo Song", "Spring Song", "I Won't Be Sad Again", "Saigon Girls", and "Personality". Bob FrankBob Frank (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Vanguard/Light In The Attic, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $5.99 16.99
A wonderful lost gem from the legendary Vanguard Records – a set issued in the 70s, but with the best independent spirit of the label from the decade before! Bob Frank is a very unique songwriter – and has this amazing ability to paint these personal little pictures in song – portraits of unique characters and individuals from the darker side of American life – sung in a frank (no pun intended), straight style that doesn't pull any punches – and which offers slightly different shading in words and structure to fit each individual. The album virtually disappeared upon release – possibly because it was too folksy for the post-folk generation – but it's a real treasure that we'd rank up there with the hippest of the 60s underground singer-songwriters. Titles include "Wino", "She Pawned Her Diamond For Some Gold", "Before The Trash Truck Comes", "Layin Around", "Return To Skid Row Joe", and "The Deer Hunter". CD

A searing live album from Frost – recorded at Detroit's legendary Grande Ballroom, and done with an intensity that maybe blows away even their classic work in the studio! Some of the tracks are nice and long, and show even more great guitar skills than usual from Dick Wagner – as he takes the group through a mix of tight rockers and trippier numbers, all with core energy that has us thinking that these guys might have broken much bigger by the 70s, had they had the push of the right sort of label! And yet it's their placement on the mostly-folk Vanguard that makes the album such a gem – with titles that include "1500 Miles", "Rock & Roll Music", "Sweet Lady Love", "Donny's Blues", "Baby Once You Got It", "Take My Hand/Mystery Man", and a 17 minute take on "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place". A weird little record – but not without some nice moments! The record was produced and put together by Jan Hammer – and in many ways, is very much like his hard-jamming fusion work fo the time. Earle plays congas, timbales, moog, and other percussion – and also sings on a number of cuts, often with some sort of vocal programming. Hammer's on most tracks too – jamming away on keyboards and synth with a strong sound that predates Miami Vice, and which sounds a lot rougher and meaner. There's definitely some good tracks on here that would appeal to any fan of funky fusion, but there's also some weirder noodlier bits too. As with other records by Elvin, there's some great guest work too – reeds from a shifting lineup that includes Dave Liebman, Frank Foster, and Steve Grossman – providing that wailing intensity that Elvin sought after the passing of Coltrane, but in a fresh new way – and Albert Dailey also adds in some sweet keyboards as well. The fantastic first outing of Oregon as a quartet – recorded right after the group's initial work with the Paul Winter Consort – but not released until a decade after the material was first put down to tape! Oregon had already reached greater fame by the time of the record's issue in 1980 – but you can easily hear the fullness of their vision here, right at the start – the unusual blend of world elements and jazz – served up in a pre-ECM universe by Ralph Towner on guitars, piano, and mellophone; Paul McCandless on oboe and English Horn; Glen Moore on bass and flute; and Collin Walcott on tablas, sitar, 12 string guitar, percussion, and esraj. The songs are maybe a bit more spacious and shorter than later years, but the group's sound is very firmly in place – on titles that include "Jade Vision", "Margueritte", "Canyon Song", "Full Circle", "Collin's Delite", and "Aheer". Drummer Elvin Jones joins the groundbreaking Oregon trio – and rather than making the set a record that's dominated by the star, Elvin nicely finds the right sort of way to really mix his talents with the group! Jones in the 70s could be pretty dynamic as a leader – but here, he's nicely open, spacious, and loose – slipping in surprisingly well next to the modal elements and global tones of the famous lineup – with Ralph Towner on guitars and piano, Collin Walcott on tablas and congas, Glen Moore on bass, and Paul McCandless on reeds. The Siegel Schwall Band are still kicking it hard here – playing with a surprisingly gritty vibe, maybe thanks in part to production from the great Sam Charters – who'd handled so many great blues sessions over the years! But we're guessing that at this point, the group didn't even need Sam's help to sound this tight – as they're really finding their voice, and work with mostly original material of their own – yet in a way that strongly echo the Chicago blues legends who inspired their sound. The set leads off with a version of the Willie Dixon tune "Shake For Me" – then moves into originals that include "My Starter Won't Start", "Think", "334 3599", "Get Away Man", "Wouldn't Quit You", and "You Can't Run That Fast". Siegel Schwall BandSiegel-Schwall '70 ... CD
Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
The Siegel Schwall Band change things up a bit here – leaving behind the rootsy Sam Charters production of their first few albums for the the heady sound of Dunwich – and picking up just a bit of electric piano and electric bass in the process! The style is still rooted in blues, but maybe not as slavishly tied to the modes of Chess Records as before – as the group, especially Corky Siegel, seem to be coming up with lyrical modes that are maybe a bit more of a nod to the north side crowds that were really cheering them on in Chicago – not mainstream, certainly, but maybe a bit more longhaired than south side juke joint crowds – almost a bit of a Bay Area vibe in the mix. Titles include "Angel Food Cake", "Song", "A Sunshine Day In My Mind", "Do You Remember", "I Don't Want You To Be My Girl", and "Geronimo". CD
