✨✧ Robbie BashoSongs Of The Great Mystery – The Lost Vanguard Sessions ... CD
Vanguard/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A never-issued album from the guitar genius Robbie Basho – material recorded at the same Vanguard Records sessions that produced his monumental albums Voice Of The Eagle and Zarthus, and every bit as great as the work that appeared on those records – and as the tracks on Basho's Takoma Records albums from the 60s! The set features Robbie doing a bit of his unusual vocalizations, but in a way that's folded in very strongly with his unusual phrasings on acoustic guitar – although with Basho maybe hitting a more familiar folk style at some moments, even though the lyrics are all his own, and have a mystical quality that really matches his work on guitar. There's a really haunting quality to the whole record, and the vocal tunes could easily have Basho right up there with left-field contemporaries, like Fred Neil on Capitol, or Tim Hardin on his early Columbia years – but, mixed with the longform guitar explorations, create a vibe that's completely Robbie's own. Titles include "A Day In The Life Of Lemuria", which is an unusual piano/whistling tune – plus "The Butterfly Of Wonder", "Thunder Sun", "Song Of The Great Mystery", "Thunder Love", "Death Song", "Night Way", and "Katerei Tekakwitha". Jon BatisteChronology Of A Dream – Live At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Jon Batiste is fantastic here – way more so than we normally give him credit for, and maybe even sharper in a live setting than in the studio! The group works with a mix of jazz, funk, and soul – but very different than Jon's band on TV, as there's deeper, richer elements going on – both in the general colors of the instruments, and in the way that the solos soar out and really give the songs some emotion. The lineup features tenor, alto, trumpet, and lots of nice bottom currents on the rhythms – sometimes funky, sometimes more lyrical – all topped with great piano lines from Batiste, who also sings a bit too. Much of the phrasing and flavor is more modern than some of his other albums – and titles include "Blacck", "Prince", "Pwwr", "Birthe", "Kenner", "Story", "Ordr", and "Higher". John ColtraneLive At The Village Vanguard Again! ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used ... $8.99
John Coltrane returns to the Village Vanguard – but his sound here is a lot more far-reaching than a few years before! The album's a great counterpart to the first Vanguard session – as it takes all of the bold, soaring energy of that date, and balances it with the newly introspective sound of the later Coltrane years – plus some of the freedoms learned from the Love Supreme era. The group here showcases the new territory explored by Coltrane – with Trane himself on tenor, soprano, and a bit of bass clarinet (echoing earlier Dolphy), plus Pharoah Sanders on additional tenor, Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Rasheid Ali on drums. The album only features 2 long tracks – an incredibly soulful version of "Naima", and a very firey version of "My Favorite Things", but one that begins with a haunting bass solo by Garrison! CD

Eastern RebellionJust One Of Those Nights At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Music Masters, 1995. Used ... $9.99
A great live set from Cedar Walton's Eastern Rebellion group – still held down by the core team of Walton and drummer Billy Higgins, and featuring some great tenor work from Ralph Moore, plus bass by David Williams. Moore's presence is always a welcome thing on any session – and the longer live tracks on this session really let him stretch out with the kind of imaginative blowing we've always come to expect in his work. The titles are mostly familiar, but the setting is fresh, and titles include "Something In Common", "A Child Is Born", "Seven Minds", "Django", and "Jacob's Ladder". CD

Bill EvansSunday At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used ... $4.99
One of Bill Evans' landmark sessions with the young bassist Scott LaFaro – a player who made key contributions on every record he touched, then left this earth far too soon in his career! The live session's a perfect demonstration of the way that the Evans trio format not only re-worked the use of the piano in jazz, but also the bass and drums as well – as LaFaro's deeply evocative playing is paired with the equally fresh drum work of Paul Motian – heard here at his youthful early best, before some of his contributions to jazz had become cliche in the hands of other players. The session was caught live at the Village Vanguard on the night of June 25, 1961 – and titles include longish takes on "Solar", "Jade Visions", "Gloria's Step", and "Alice In Wonderland". CD

Nonesuch, 1980. Used 6 CDs ... $74.99
Brilliant late work from Bill Evans – his last set of recordings from the Village Vanguard – recorded in the summer of 1980, nearly two decades after his first famous albums at the club! Evans here is a wealth of imagination – really stretching out in relaxed, fluid formation – gentler than before, but also with a deeper sense of feeling too – and getting some great support from trio members Marc Johnson on bass and Joe Labarbera on drums. Tracks mostly hover around the five minute range – but there's some key longer numbers too – and the whole thing's a perfect example of why live Bill Evans is often some of the best Bill Evans you can find! 58 tracks on 6CDs, packaged with a booklet – and titles include "Nardis", "Knight For Mary F", "Emily", "Minha", "My Romance/Five", "But Not For Me", "Bill's Hit Tune", "I Do It For Your Love", "Quiet Now", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Your Story", "Tiffany", and "Re Person I Knew". Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... About April 22, 2020
Prime post-Coltrane material from Elvin Jones – featuring his "power trio" style of operation, with one great sax player out front, and Jones kicking it in the back with the bass player! In this case, the sax player is George Coleman – who's really finding a voice of his own in these late 60s years, and really makes the most of the extended space of the album to stretch out, soar, and show off his ever-growing talent for a powerful solo! Wilbur Little is on bass, playing nice round warm notes to offset Jones' edgey playing – and the group's joined by trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson on one track – who brings in a soulful edge that's mighty nice. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Laura", "Mister Jones", and "By George". CD

Resonance, 1966. New Copy 3LP Gatefold (reissue)... $69.99
The birth of a legend – documented here in a really wonderful package – a brilliant 2CD set that brings forth the first-ever recordings of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra – heard here on the debut nights of their very long run of Monday night performances at the Village Vanguard! Right from the start, this group was really something special – formed by the meeting of two legendary talents, trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis – and driven strongly by a lineup of all-star players who were happy to shelve their egos this night of the week, and come together in a unit that was far more than just the sum of its amazing parts. Players on these two nights include Hank Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, Jimmy Owens and Bill Berry on trumpets, Bob Brookmeyer and Garnett Brown on trombones, and Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Pepper Adams, and Jerry Dodgion on a flurry of amazing reed performances – producing the kinds of insane colors and edges the group was always known for! This isn't big band jazz – at least not the sort you'd think of with cliche – and instead, the recordings document the meeting of amazing talents creating effortlessly together under the leadership of two generous giants. The package is wonderful, really a tribute to this amazing music – oversized, and with a huge booklet of notes and photos – and 2CDs with titles that include "Back Bone", "Big Dipper", "Mornin Reverend", "Little Pixie", "All My Yesterdays", "Once Around", "Ah That's Freedom", and "Don't Ever Leave Me". Joe LovanoJoe Lovano Quartets – Live At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Blue Note, 1994/1995. Used 2 CDs ... $8.99
A really great showcase for the budding talents of Joe Lovano – heard here at a crucial point in his rise to glory on Blue Note! Joe had already been blowing greatness on tenor for years before this set, but these Village Vanguard recordings put Lovano in the same heady space as Joe Henderson or Sonny Rollins at the Vanguard on Blue Note – by really allowing a great sense of open, spontaneous expression that stands as a nice counterpoint to his well-conceived studio work – a very earnest demonstration of Lovano's rich talents as a saxophonist. Joe plays soprano and C melody sax as well – and the group features always-great work on trumpet and flugelhorn from Tom Harrell, plus Anthony Cox on bass and Billy Hart on drums. Tracks include "Song & Dance", "Sail Away", "Blues Not To Lose", "Birds Of Springtimes Go By", and "Uprising". CD

Blue Note, 1957. Used ... $4.99
One of the greatest Sonny Rollins records ever! The set is a legendary batch of trio tracks that feature Sonny working in a format that is incredibly free for the time, and which show him as more of a modernist than a bopper – although his solos are still pretty darn fantastic from a bop perspective – stretching out in free, piano-less space – really cutting some amazing edges, and blown in tones we might never have expected from Rollins a few years before. The group is beautifully open ended – with Wilbur Ware on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, and both of them in their best mode of the late 50s. This package features a reworked lineup of tracks from the LP – showing the true first volume of material – and adding in Donald Bailey on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums for a few tracks. Titles include "Night In Tunisia (afternoon take)", "Night In Tunisia (evening take)", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Four", "Woody N You", and "Old Devil Moon". CD

Woody ShawStepping Stones – Live At The Village Vanguard (expanded edition) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1978. Used ... $9.99
Soulful brilliance from Woody Shaw – a searing live set that matches the power of earlier classics like Moontrane and Blackstone Legacy! The album's got Woody working with a heck of a great group – Carter Jefferson on tenor and soprano sax, Onaje Allan Gumbs on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – all of whom come together with just the right mix of earthy grooving and spiritual searching that puts Woody in his best light. Jefferson is especially great – as it's his soaring work on reeds that really give the album a sense of spirit – but credit should also be giving to the well-knit rhythm team, whose ability to push out in flowing lines of power really raises the energy of the performance. Titles include "Stepping Stone", "In A Capricornian Way", "Seventh Avenue", and "Theme For Maxine". CD features 3 bonus tracks, 2 unissued – "Blues For Ball", "All Things Being Equal Are Not", and "Escape Velocity". CD

✨✧ John ColtraneLive At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Impulse, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublimely spiritual work from the great John Coltrane – a live album, but one that's easily one of his most important contributions to music in the early 60s – and a set that we'd rank right up there with his best studio sides for Impulse or Atlantic Records at the time! The group here features McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – plus the very important addition of Eric Dolphy on the leadoff tune "Spiritual" – a number that features Dolphy on bass clarinet alongside Coltrane's tremendous tenor, as both players open up on extended solos that take the tune to nearly 14 minutes in length! Other numbers omit Dolphy, but are still totally great – and Coltrane picks up the soprano sax for a classic reading of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" – and the group shifts slightly for the freer "Chasin The Trane", a 16 minute romp done with only tenor sax, drums, and bass – the latter of which is handled here by Jimmy Garrison instead of Workman. The album features a small group of all-star players recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1967 – all blowing on long, unstructured tunes that offer amazing solo space, and the kind of spontaneity that's rarely captured so well in a live jazz setting. Players include Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Chick Corea on piano, Ray Nance on violin, Richard Davis on bass, and either Elvin Jones or Mel Lewis on bass – and the unusual mix of players really comes together beautifully for the record, in a rare spirit that recalls the best of the Norman Granz JATP sessions, but with a hipper sort of 60s feel. 3 numbers in all: "Dizzy's Blues", "Blues For Max", and "Tour De Force" – all presented in very long versions. A important record from Joan Baez – one that has the singer expanding her sound, but in all the right possible ways – bringing in some Nashville elements to her folksy roots! The record features some larger backings arranged by producer Norbert Putnam – with bits of strings, The Memphis Horns, and some backup vocals – but most of a focus around the core combo of the album, which includes Charlie McCoy on harmonica, and Pete Wade and Norman Blake on guitars. Titles include "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Three Horses", "Last Lonely & Wretched", "Lincoln Freed Me Today", "Gabriel & Me", and "Fifteen Months". LP, Vinyl record album

Ted Brown Sextet with Art Pepper & Warne MarshFree Wheeling ... LP
Vanguard, 1956. Very Good+ ... $16.99
One of the few sessions ever cut by tenorist Ted Brown – working here with a group that features Warne Marsh and Art Pepper in the frontline, with rhythm by Ronnie Ball on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Jeff Morton on drums. The session's got the outward appearance of a west coast session, but has much more soul overall – the kind of Back Bay Boston sound you'd hear in 50s sessions by Charlie Mariano or Dick Johnson – with plenty of rasp on Pepper's horn, and some nice edges on Brown's as well! Tracks are short, and often with ensemble heads – but the production is beautiful, and the interplay between the three saxophonists comes through with amazing quality! Titles include "Crazy She Calls Me", "Arrival", "Once We Were Young", "Avalon", "Foolin Myself", "Aretha", and "Long Gone". LP, Vinyl record album

Larry CoryellAt The Village Gate ... LP
Vanguard, 1971. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of the most stripped-down records from the early years of Larry Coryell – but one of the most powerful, too – as the record sometimes has Larry singing along with his guitar, in an effortless blend of trippy rock and jazz! The date's a live one – and the trio features Marvin Bronson on bass and Harry Wilkison on drums – both players who are super-tight, and move through lots of amazing rhythm patterns on the longer tracks on the set – which maybe demonstrate the growing power of the young guitarist more than his studio work of the time. Given the structure of the group, and the very expressive work on electric guitar, the whole thing's almost got a Hendrix-into-jazz sort of vibe – although Larry "sings" mostly with his guitar instead of his voice. Titles include "The Opening", "Can You Follow", "Beyond These Chilling Winds", "Entaredecendo En Saudade", and "After Later". LP, Vinyl record album

Vanguard/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Early work from guitar genius Larry Coryell – and a set that's maybe not as basic as you'd guess from the title! Larry's clearly out to state himself right from the very first note – in guitar modes that seem to draw equally from jazz, blues, and rock – and which are produced here with just the right dose of fuzz to showcase the key kind of crossover energy that he'd bring to the first decade or so of his career! The tracks were recorded in the late 60s, but never originally issued at the time – yet the album makes as great a statement of Coryell's power as any of his Vanguard classics – thanks in part to killer work from sidemen who include Bernard Purdie on drums, Mike Mandel on organ, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Ray Mantilla on percussion. Titles include a great version of Larry Young's "Tyrone", plus the tracks "Sex", "Slow Blues", "Call To The Higher Consciousness", "Organ Blues", and "The Jam With Albert". CD

Larry CoryellCoryell ... LP
Vanguard, 1969. Very Good+ ... $18.99
Maybe the funkiest album that guitarist Larry Coryell ever cut – his debut as a leader, and a fuzzy, freaky set that features some massively heavy drums from the great Bernard Purdie! The set's jazz at the core, but has lots of rock elements too – including vocals from Coryell on a few cuts, whose rough-edged style of singing works nicely with the fuzz on his guitar. The whole thing's a really freewheeling trip down that genre-busting road that had opened up in the underground of the late 60s – a path taken away from folk, jazz, rock, and other more mainstream roads – served up with help from Mike Mandel on keyboards, Jim Pepper on flute, and bassists Chuck Rainey, Ron Carter, and Albert Stinson. Titles include the long funky groove called "The Jam with Albert", plus the tracks "Sex", "Beautiful Woman", "Morning Sickness", and "Ah Wuv Ooh". (Nice "naked kids" cover, too – the kind that must have made someone's therapist a lot of money!) LP, Vinyl record album

Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... $10.99 14.98
A fantastic record from guitarist Larry Coryell – one that maybe has him shedding some of the more rockish tendencies of his roots, while finding the way forward in a searing, searching style of funky jazz! There's almost a Flying Dutchman sort of righteousness to the record – as Larry mixes the ever-increasing sharpness of his guitar with great soprano sax from Steve Marcus – who himself may well be topping performances on albums under his own name. Bottom energy is driven strongly by Mervin Bronson on bass and Harry Wilkinson on drums – and the group also features lots of great keyboards from Mike Mandel – playing "electric piano with fuzz wah"! Titles include "Foreplay", "Ruminations", "Scotland 1", "Beggars' Chant", and "Offering". CD

Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Larry Coryell tries out his vocal chops a bit on this album with his classic group from the early 70s – but the main "voice" on the record is still his wonderfully tight guitar – which has a beautifully sharp sound throughout! When Coryell sings, he almost seems to be doing so through the pickup of a guitar – or a least getting processed via pedals and effects – which gives his singing as much fuzz as his electric instrument – set up in a great combo that features work on tenor and soprano sax from Steve Marcus, and a mixture of piano and Arp from the great Mike Mandel. Titles include "PF Sloan", "The Real Great Escape", "Are You Too Clever", "Love Life's Offering", and "Makes Me Wanna Shout". CD

Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Guitarist Larry Coryell really changes it up from before – shedding both some of his electric modes and his vocal inclinations – and also working with a completely different group, who give the record a very unusual sound! Coryell plays a lot of acoustic guitar here, in addition to some electric – and the group also features additional guitar from Ralph Towner – whose open, airy approach really shapes the sound in a different way – but, alongside Larry, also has more force than on his own ECM recordings. The group also features Glen Moore on acoustic bass – but the real highlight may well be Collin Wolcott, who plays tablas and congas – bringing in earthy, global elements that really make some of the best moments shine. Titles include "Julie La Belle", "Song For Jim Webb", "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Ann Arbor", and some improvisations on music by Robert De Visee. CD

A great entry in the ever-diverse catalog of guitarist Larry Coryell in the 70s – a set that has him both returning to Vanguard Records, and to more electric modes than on a few previous records – and also working with the sons of Dave Brubeck in a nicely tight mode! The album's maybe a bit more of a conventional jazz outing than Coryell at the start of the decade – given the Darius, Chris, and Dan Brubeck play acoustic piano, bass, and drums, respectively – but Larry's always changing up the rhythms and tones in these really great ways, and getting some nice inspiration from the percussion of Ray Mantilla, who's also in the group. Titles include "Mediterranean Sundance Entre Dos Aguas", "Sweet Shuffle", "Return", "Rue Gregoire Du Tour", and "Three Mile Island". CD

Vanguard, 1967. Very Good ... $14.99
A seminal set from Country Joe & The Fish – one of those albums that brought the new psychedelic sound strongly into the mainstream – but all without softening up or commercializing it at all! There's still a very sharp edge to the record – mean organ lines, fuzzy guitar, and lots of cool production that makes the sounds weirder and more watery than before – even the vocals, which have this edge that nobody would ever refer to as Sunshine Pop! In a way, the whole set's as sinister as any of the most groundbreaking albums on Elektra from the time – and definitely shows that both Vanguard and the group were at the forefront of the new psych recording scene. The Johnstons got their start as a more traditional Irish folk group, but like most of their British Isles contemporaries at the end of the 60s, they were able to find a way to bridge the ancient and the current – by this point mixing traditional material with some very well-chosen contemporary cuts, all of which really flower even more wonderfully in the beautiful male/female vocal style of the group – who can hit a warm blend that's almost like the west coast post-folk modes of the Sunshine Pop generation, but much more cerebral. Production is nicely stripped-down at most points – with a focus on acoustic instrumentation, but also some slight elements on the second two albums that almost remind us of the hipness of Warner/Reprise productions for this sort of material. A rare disco outing from funky drummer Alphonze Mouzon – one of a few albums he cut with the group Poussez! Alphonze is very much in charge of the groove here – handling all writing, arranging, and production chores for the record – and playing drums, keyboards, and percussion, while also throwing in a bit of his own vocals too! The groove is less of the guitar-heavy funk of Mouzon's mid 70s years, and very much the disco set you'd guess from the cover – and despite the image of a sexy duo on the front, Poussez is actually a trio of female singers, plus one other member who delivers "moaning and handclaps"! Folksy vocals from the lovely Judy Roderick – an album that sits nicely across a few different genres, and which really even stands out from the rest of its generation! Judy's a folk singer at heart, but she's working here with some jazzier inflections, as well as a bit of country western sensibility – in a style that's years ahead of its time, and almost prefaces some of the alt-country and underground work bubbling in the indie scene today. There's still a frailness here that allies Judy with the sound of 60s folk – particularly that of Jean Ritchie – but the overall sound is somehow more complex, and deeper. Early work from Chicago's Siegel Schwall Band – one of the better blue-eyed blues groups to ever come out of the Windy City! Like their contemporaries, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, these guys started with a real love of the music, and worked very close to the source – earning their dues in small clubs on the south side, and continuing to avoid some of the more polished, or more jamming modes that were beginning to birth in the blues rock scene in the years before classic rock emerged. Instead, the quartet keep things very close to their Chess, Cobra, and Vee Jay inspirations – with work from Corky Siegel on harmonica, piano, and vocals, plus more vocals from Jim Schwall, whose guitar work really gets a chance to stretch out here on some of the longer tracks. Titles include "ISPI Blues", "I'm A King Bee", "Slow Blues In A", "I Liked It Where We Walked", and "Bring It With You When You Come" – plus the 11 minute "That's Why I Treat My Baby So Fine". A great first album from this unusual Florida trio – a hip little group whose members would later end up working with The Allman Brothers, Boz Scaggs, and Cowboy – but who sound plenty darn great here on their own! The style's a lot headier than you might expect – almost with some of the deeper echoes you'd expect from the LA scene of the late 60s – the post-folk explorations of the headier side of rock, done with slight psych undercurrents, and a warm vocal style that's introspective, yet never overindulgent – a really great balance that should have made these guys as big as Buffalo Springfield or Crosby Stills & Nash at the time. A few moments get somewhat heavy, but never too much so – and the album's filled with great original numbers that include "Sandcastles", "Porcelain Mirrors", "Pedestals", "A Different Kind Of Head", "Free", "Pick A Gripe", and "Cries Of Treason". (Nice "naked kids" cover, too – the kind that must have made someone's therapist a lot of money!) CD

Vanguard/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early work by Frost – one of the tightest rock groups on Vanguard Records at the end of the 60s – although this package of tracks wasn't issued until nearly a decade later! The tracks here are tight, heavy, and have a nice blend of blues rock and freakier fuzz in the mix – balanced out by some harmonica and acoustic guitar, which make these guys way more than just another hard rock prototype from their generation! Titles include "Black Train", "Mystery Man", "Take My Hand", "Sweet Lady Love", "Black As Night", and "Jennie Lee". CD

✨✧ FrostLive At The Grande Ballroom ... CD
Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A searing live album from Frost – recorded at Detroit's legendary Grande Ballroom, and done with an intensity that maybe blows away even their classic work in the studio! Some of the tracks are nice and long, and show even more great guitar skills than usual from Dick Wagner – as he takes the group through a mix of tight rockers and trippier numbers, all with core energy that has us thinking that these guys might have broken much bigger by the 70s, had they had the push of the right sort of label! And yet it's their placement on the mostly-folk Vanguard that makes the album such a gem – with titles that include "1500 Miles", "Rock & Roll Music", "Sweet Lady Love", "Donny's Blues", "Baby Once You Got It", "Take My Hand/Mystery Man", and a 17 minute take on "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place". Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of those groups that should have been huge, and who should have ended up alongside the giants of classic rock to emerge during their generation! For some reason, Frost have always been part of a hipster underground who focus on rare psych and hard rock gems that were just beginning to emerge at the end of the 60s – and these guys have all the right elements in place to blow away bigger names like The Amboy Dukes or James Gang – including some impeccable guitar work from Dick Wagner, who also produced the album for the quartet – with a sound that's compressed, but never slick – songs that are focused, but never too tight. Titles include "Maybe Tomorrow", "It's So Hard", "Fifteen Hundred Miles", "Through The Eyes Of Love", "Big Time Spender", and "A Long Way From Home". CD

✨✧ Elvin JonesMain Force ... CD
Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Elvin Jones is listed as the main force on the cover – but as with all of his 70s albums, the whole outing is very much a strong group affair – thanks to a killer core quartet that features Ryo Kawasaki on guitar, Pat LaBarbera on reeds and Dave Williams on bass – working with a great blend of sax and guitar that really helps refine the Elvin Jones sound of the 70s! As with other records by Elvin, there's some great guest work too – reeds from a shifting lineup that includes Dave Liebman, Frank Foster, and Steve Grossman – providing that wailing intensity that Elvin sought after the passing of Coltrane, but in a fresh new way – and Albert Dailey also adds in some sweet keyboards as well. Titles include "Salty Iron", "Sweet Mama", "Mini Modes", "Philomene", and "Song Of Rejoicing After Returning From A Hunt". CD

Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The mighty drummer Elvin Jones is working here with a very hip group – in a mode that's maybe a nice extension of his Blue Note material at the start of the 70s, in a style that shows that he definitely still has all of his groove! As with those records, there's a key reedman in place here – the young Steve Grossman, whose sharp lines are balanced with round basswork from David Williams, and excellent guitar from Roland Prince – who almost sets these chromatic fires along the way! There's also plenty of strong guest help – reeds from Frank Foster, Joe Farrell, and Azar Lawrence, piano from Kenny Barron, and percussion from the great Candido. Titles include "Haresah", "Someone's Rocking My Jazzboat", "Agenda", "Anti Calypso", and "My Lover". CD

✨✧ Elvin JonesTime Capsule ... CD
Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A real standout in the 70s catalog of Elvin Jones – for a number of key reasons! First up, the set's got more of an electric vibe than usual – thanks to Fender Rhodes from Kenny Barron and guitar from Ryo Kawasaki, who really help shape the sound of the set! Second, production is by Ed Bland – who does a masterful job of blending soul, spirit, and harder-edged jazz modes – on tunes that often have a nice modal vibe at the core! The group also features excellent alto work from Bunky Green – who really sparkles strongly throughout, and who also wrote more than half the material on the album. Guests include Frank Wess on flute, Frank Foster on soprano, and George Coleman on tenor – and titles include "Frost Bite", "Digital Display", "Moon Dance", "Time Capsule", and "Spacing". CD

✨✧ Elvin Jones, Clark Terry, James Moody & OthersSummit Meeting ... CD
Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great session of all-star work by artists who were recording for Vanguard Records in the 70s – a crack lineup that features Elvin Jones on drums, James Moody on tenor, Clark Terry on trumpet and flugelhorn, Roland Prince on guitar, and Bunky Green on alto sax! The group also gets some non all-star help on rhythm from Albert Dailey on piano and keyboards, Angel Allende on percussion, and David Williams on bass – players who really help flesh out the groove, and keep things from just being more in an old school blowing session style. The great Ed Bland produced, and clearly had a hand in the overall sound – as there's moments here that recall his work for Perception Records – and tunes include a great one by Bland, and two more by Green – titles that include "Moody Magic", "Blues For Clark", "Summit Song", "Jones", and "Tee Pee Music". Oregon open the door for a few friends to appear on the album – and in doing so, they also open themselves up as well – in a shifting set of tracks that sometimes features different groupings of the core musicians! The guests here are Bennie Wallace on tenor, Larry Karush on piano, and David Earl Johnson on congas and timbales – and the tracks move from longer to shorter, quintet to duo performances – all showing different aspects of the guitars of Ralph Towner, reeds of Paul McCandless, bass of Glen Moore, and sitar and percussion of Collin Walcott. Karush and Moore duet on piano on the beautiful "Love Over Time", Wallace and Walcott mix sitar and tenor on "First Thing In The Morning" – and other titles include "Time Remembered", "Interstate", "Timeless", "Love Over Time", and "Grazing Dreams". Beautiful live work from Oregon – a concert performance that somehow seems to provide an even more beautiful than usual setting for their special combination of talents! The group's flow is fantastic throughout – mixing the percussive elements of Collin Walcott on sitar, tablas, and percussion with reed work from Paul McCandless on a variety of horns, the bass and violin of Glen Moore, and the magical guitar skills of Ralph Towner – who also plays a few other instruments as well. Titles include "Become Seem Appear", "Undertow", "Summer Solstice", "Tryton's Horn", and "The Silence Of A Candle". CD

✨✧ OregonOur First Record ... CD
Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The fantastic first outing of Oregon as a quartet – recorded right after the group's initial work with the Paul Winter Consort – but not released until a decade after the material was first put down to tape! Oregon had already reached greater fame by the time of the record's issue in 1980 – but you can easily hear the fullness of their vision here, right at the start – the unusual blend of world elements and jazz – served up in a pre-ECM universe by Ralph Towner on guitars, piano, and mellophone; Paul McCandless on oboe and English Horn; Glen Moore on bass and flute; and Collin Walcott on tablas, sitar, 12 string guitar, percussion, and esraj. The songs are maybe a bit more spacious and shorter than later years, but the group's sound is very firmly in place – on titles that include "Jade Vision", "Margueritte", "Canyon Song", "Full Circle", "Collin's Delite", and "Aheer".
