Flute Souffle

LP (Item 51550) Prestige, 1957 — Condition: Very Good
A surprisingly great album – one that features Herbie and Bobby trading flutes and tenor, blowing long solos in a set that gives them plenty of room to work! The album only features four long tracks – "Let's March", "Tel Aviv", "Somewhere Else", and "Chasing The Bird" – blown in the open-ended mode that made some of the best Prestiges sides from the time so great. Joe Puma plays guitar, Tommy Flanagan is on piano, and rhythm is by Wendell Marshall and Bobby Donaldson.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Yellow and black label NJ pressing, with deep groove and RVG stamp! Vinyl is great overall – really no marks – but because the record is so quiet, we're grading it slightly lower. Cover has light wear in one corner, and a small sticker on the back.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, 1954/1956. Very Good+
A strange mix of material – but some great work overall! Most of the record features Miles Davis recording with a quintet that includes Thelonious Monk on piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on longer versions of "The Man I Love" (in ... Sonny Rollins

Sonny Rollins Plus 4
Prestige, 1956. Very Good+
A crackling bit of hardbop from Sonny Rollins – and a session that has Sonny playing with the Max Roach/Clifford Brown group that included Bud Powell's brother Richie on piano! Sonny had already made a strong name for himself on albums issued under the Roach/Brown tag at the time, and here ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Blue Haze
Prestige, 1954. Very Good
An early full-length album issued under Miles Davis' name – one that brings together some earlier 10" and single recordings for Prestige! The feel here is quite similar to Davis' work of the time for Blue Note – done with tracks that are short and tight, and very boppish – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Greatest Hits
Prestige, 1960s. Very Good+
While it's tough to think of a jazz player having "hits" – given the low sales of jazz albums, even in the 60s – it's still the case that Ammons' sound was so strong, and so soulful, he had plenty of fans in the crossover market for some of his bigger recordings. The album ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bernard Purdie

Purdie Good!
Prestige, 1971. Near Mint-
Bernard Purdie's first album as a leader for Prestige – cut right after he'd hipped up plenty of other sessions for the label with his famous funky drums! The groove here is very much in the best Prestige jazz funk mode of the early 70s – tightly vamping rhythms that draw heavily from ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, Early 60s. Very Good+
Excellent work from the short time that saxophonist King Curtis recorded for Prestige records – mostly on their R&B-tinged Tru-Sound label! Players include Paul Griffin on piano, Billy Butler on guitar, and Jack McDuff on Hammond! LP, Vinyl record album

Eric Dolphy

Out There
New Jazz/Prestige, 1960. Near Mint-
Eric Dolphy's second album as a leader – and already a bold step forward from the first! The format here changes from the more standard lineup of before – as Dolphy drops out other horn players, loses the piano, and brings the cello of Ron Carter into the frontline! Backing is by the ... Don Lanphere/Fats Navarro/Leo Parker/ Al Haig

Prestige First Sessions 1949/50
Prestige, 1949/1950. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
The earliest days of a legendary jazz label – some of the first 78rpm material recorded by Prestige Records, all of it pretty darn great! The first half of the set features work by the group of tenorist Don Lanphere – a great player we don't really know at all, but one who's got Fats ... LP, Vinyl record album

Houston Person

Truth
Prestige, 1970. Very Good
One of Houston Person's first forays into the jazz funk sound that other Prestige Records players were picking up at the time – a sweet little set with some nicely extended tunes! The groove here is a bit harder than some of Person's previous soul jazz sets – with some tightly snapping ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack McDuff

Hot Barbeque
Prestige, 1966. Very Good
One of our all-time favorite albums from Brother Jack McDuff – not just for the cover (which is plenty appealing to us as BBQ fans!), but also for the tight, sharply focused grooves on the set – some of Jack's first really firey work on record! The combo here is great – with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sun Ra

Astro Black
Impulse, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the darkest Sun Ra albums of the early 70s – and a set that's also a bit unusual in his catalog as well! The album was issued during Ra's run with Impulse Records – a period that mostly saw the label reissue previous records from the Saturn catalog – save for a rare few ... LP, Vinyl record album

Weather Report

Heavy Weather
Columbia, 1977. Near Mint-
One of the biggest hits ever for Weather Report – thanks to Joe Zawinul's leadoff track "Birdland" – one of those tunes that entered the canon immediately, and saw countless covers pop up over the years – kind of a rare thing for a jazz tune at this point in time!
