Decade Of Jazz Vol 2 – 1949 to 1959

LP (Item 511030) Blue Note, 1950s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
With selections by Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Milt Jackson, Jay Jay Johnson, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith, Sonny Clark, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, and Lou Donaldson.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s black b label pressing. Cover has ring wear, edge wear with seam splits, and light aging.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Larry Young

Unity
Blue Note, 1965. Sealed
A brilliant album that would forever change the way the organ was used in jazz! The set's the greatest contribution ever from organist Larry Young – a lean and modal session recorded with help from a young quartet that includes Woody Shaw on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor, and Elvin Jones ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1956. Near Mint-
A real stormer from Jimmy Smith – done in his first year at Blue Note, but with a sense of power and imagination that cannot be denied! It might be easy to pass up this album, because many of the tunes are standards, done in a simple trio format – but back at the time of this session, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Newk's Time
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good+
About as classic as you can get for Sonny Rollins during the 50s – from the cover right down to the incredible solos on the set! The album's got Rollins really stretching out – still not finding the freer trio mode of his Vanguard session, but still bringing in plenty of fresh ideas in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don Wilkerson

Shoutin!
Blue Note, 1963. Near Mint-
Shoutin is right – as the album's a wailer all the way through, one of the few jazz albums cut by Texas tenor giant Don Wilkerson – best known to crowds at the time for his work with the Ray Charles group, but really stepping out here in a different way for Blue Note! The album has Don ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note (UK), 1960s. Near Mint- 2LP
A great 2LP set that's a wonderful collection of Patton's excellent soul jazz organ work for Blue Note – and which also includes material that never came out on LP! The set takes tracks from rare albums like Blue John, Along Came John, Got A Good Thing, and Let 'Em Roll – plus some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note/Analogue Productions, 1961. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A fantastic early record from tenor giant Stanley Turrentine – a set that's completely hard-hitting, and which has a very different vibe than the sweeter sets he'd cut later in the 70s! Instead, this record is pure hardbop all the way through – with Turrentine matching labelmate Hank ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1961/1962. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great Blue Note 2-fer from the 70s – one that features the first issue of the album Here To Stay, plus the classic Hub Cap! On the first session on the set, the sound is sharp-edged and soulful – a reflection of the groove that Freddie was hitting in the Jazz Messengers of the early ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, Late 50s. Near Mint-
One of the few rare non-trio recordings done by Powell from around this time. He plays with a trio (Paul Chambers bass, Art Taylor drums) on the whole first side of the record, but the group's then joined by Curtis Fuller for all of side 2. Fuller's deep trombone makes for a different twist, and a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

6 Pieces Of Silver
Blue Note, Late 50s. Good
The lyrical genius at his best – an early record from pianist Horace Silver, but one that already has him really defining that special sort of sound that made him really stand out from his contemporaries! The difference here is hard to put in words – but there's a careful ear for an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ... Prestige, Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Two classic Eric Dolphy albums – back to back in a single set! First up us Outward Bound – Eric Dolphy's first album ever as a leader – recorded almost immediately after his arrival on the New York scene! The sound here is already bolder and stronger than the Dolphy experiments ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1959. Near Mint-
One of the greatest Cannonball Adderley albums from the Riverside years – a completely smoking live date recorded in San Francisco, often with long tracks that really let the group open up and do their thing! The lineup here is that classic one that first grabbed attention – the group ... LP, Vinyl record album
