We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used
for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with,
so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.
Used Vinyl Grades
Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for
the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-")
the grading for the vinyl.
If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws,
these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that
since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with
the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records
are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible
for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt
to listen through them and note how they play.
The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:
Additional Marks & Notes
If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially
if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record.
This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip,
cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
"Sister James" is a nice 70s crime jazz instrumental, with a good tenor solo by Nino, and production that's better than any of his other records from the time. "Clair De Lune" is a jazzy take on Debussy's famous composition. 7-inch, Vinyl record
Classic Chicago soul from Mamie Galore! "It Ain't Necessary" has a rolling party groove that fits Mamie's husky vocal style really well. Monk Higgins is leading the arrangements, and the tracks' got a soaring northern groove that's very nice! "Don't Think" shows off Mamie's ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Mellow harmony soul from Chicago – a great little indie single by a group we know little about! "You Turn Me On" starts very slow and starts to build up as the track goes on – in a way that turns a slightly sad vocal into a much more positive feel. "Generation Gap" ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Great stuff! "Wear It On Our Face" is one of their wildest cuts, and starts out with this crazy prepared piano introduction that sounds like it was just lifted from a John Cage record! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A very early Scepter single by Dionne Warwick – so early that the label put "This Empty Place" on the a-side, even though "Wishin & Hopin" went onto be the hit! "Empty Place" has a fuller sound than the usual Warwick mode – still in a Bacharach & ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
A sock-soul cut with a really fierce sound! Frankie's vocals are great, but the tune's even better on the flip – where a mad cowbell starts things out in a monster break! That break's worth the record alone – but the whole thing's a mighty mighty burner! 7-inch, Vinyl record
One of the best breakbeat tracks you'll ever find from the JBs! This original single includes parts 1, 2, & 3 of this monster cut from the "Damn Right I Am Somebody" LP – which are more than were on the album version! A classic, and still one of the best cuts ever by the JBs! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A great bit of old school hip hop – served up with plenty of funky 45 touches! Fresh Mark have a relation to some of the recent work coming out from Tramp Records – and although the style here is hip hop, circa 1982, the overall presentation has plenty of deep funk spirit! Drums are ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
