Harmony in Jazz

LP (Item 4953) Encore, Late 50s — Condition: Near Mint-

Budget pressing of some of their great early swingin' vocal jazz sides from the 50's. Tracks include things like "Fascinatin' Rhythm", "Goody, Goody", and "Some Minor Changes", which are among some of their best tracks, and some of the best ever white vocal group sides. Marty Paich handled most of the arrangements, so you can be sure this one swings.  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Hi-Lo's

Love Nest (CSP)
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+
One of the Hi Los dreamiest albums – a gentle batch of ballads and love tunes, conducted by Frank Comstock with a gentle, late nite approach. The style's not as dramatic or showy as some of the group's other albums of the time, but it does make for a really wonderful set – pillowy soft ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+
One of the swinginest albums by the Hi Lo's, thanks to some great backing from Marty Paich and his Dek-Tette – the same group used to back Mel Torme and other west coast singers on other great vocal sessions of the time! Marty brings a bit more groove to the set than usual – pushing ... LP, Vinyl record album
Reprise, Early 60s. Very Good-
One of the grooviest albums ever made by this great jazz vocal group – and a record that's darn impossible to find on wax! The Hi Lo's here hit the bossa craze of the 60's, and they turn their vocal harmonies to a Brazilian groove, in sort of a roundabout recognition of the way that their ... LP, Vinyl record album
Solid State, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
A funky big band album, recorded by Thad Jones & Mel Lewis, with the great Joe Williams on vocals! The record is one of the most sought-after by the team – probably because it includes the hard breakbeat version of "Get Out of My Life Woman" that's been sampled often over the ... MPS, 1970. Near Mint-
A really great later album from Anita – one recorded live in Berlin, with some backing by the George Arvanitas trio – at the time when they had the kick-ass rhythm section of Jacky Samson on bass and Charles Saudrais on drums. Anita's in a much more swinging groove than usual – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah Vaughan takes on the work of Duke Ellington – almost presented here in a style that's similar to some of the Songbook albums on Verve from the 50s! Nancy Wilson

Nancy – Naturally
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+
A great one from Nancy Wilson – a set that has the singer working with full arrangements from Billy May, who's got this surprisingly subtle approach at times that works really well with the soulful currents in Nancy's vocals! The approach is almost more like Oliver Nelson, especially with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Sinatra

Only The Lonely
Capitol, 1958. Very Good
One of Frank Sinatra's last great ballad albums for Capitol – a sad and dreamy batch of tunes that kicks off with the incredible "Only The Lonely" – one of those Sinatra torch songs that's so great, so sad, nobody else has ever been able to record a better version, nor have ...
