Kenny RankinBottom Line Encore Collection ... CD
Bottom Line/BMG, 1990. Used ... $4.99
Beautiful later work from Kenny Rankin – a spare solo set recorded at The Bottom Line in 1990, but a record that sparkles with all the brilliance of his best 70s sessions! Kenny's working totally alone here – accompanying his own vocals with acoustic guitar – and the format really demonstrates his amazing power and presence – a sweetly swinging sound that always has a fluid groove, even when there's no other rhythm to back it up! Rankin's tone is tremendous throughout – with those bell-like notes that made him a standout singer from the very first – and the tunes themselves are a great array of the sort of material he sang the best in the late 60s and early 70s. Titles include "She's A Lady", "Berimbau", "Haven't We Met", "Inside", "Peaceful", "Time & Love", "Always", "I've Just Seen A Face", "Doralice/Sunshine Of My Life", and "In The Name Of Love". CD

Arthur VerocaiEncore ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2007. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
Tremendous new work from Arthur Verocai – the Brazilian legend who's best remembered for his sublime self-titled album from the 70s, but who sounds equally great on this contemporary release! The record has a really classic feel overall – warm, soulful, and filled with plenty of jazzy touches – the best of which are brought to the record by Azymuth, who help Verocai out on about half the album's tracks! But even without their assistance, the whole thing's still plenty darn great – a brilliant batch of original tunes that have a bubbling, mellow sort of majesty – a bit like Marcos Valle or Edu Lobo's best music of the early 70s, and with a similar sort of sophistication as well. Verocai plays acoustic and electric guitar, and vocals are by a variety of guest singers who really get the spirit of the album nicely (including Ivan Lins on one track.) Titles include "Tupa Tupi", "Sucuri", "Abertura", "Bis", "Amor Na Contra Mao", "Caminho Da Roca", "Tudo De Bom", and "Dona Das Meninas". CD

✨✧ Kenny Clarke & Francy BolandGolden Eight – Encore! ... LP
Rearward (Italy), 1961. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Way more than an "encore" of the legendary Clarke Boland album Golden Eight – and instead a whole different set of recordings, done way back in 1961, but unissued until now! The album's a killer through and through – every bit the same sort of gem you'd get with the early Clarke Boland albums of the pre-MPS years – extremely tight large ensemble jazz, driven with plenty of soul in the rhythm section, and swinging with some incredible solos that further deepen the sound! Right from the start, the pair were totally on the money – and work here with a lineup that's filled with key European soloists, including Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Derek Humble on alto sax, Karl Drewo on tenor, and Fats Sadi on percussion – not to mention the core crack rhythm trio of Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include the great Boland originals "A Ball For Othello", "La Campimania", "You Dig It", "Pape Satan Aleppe", and "Free Wheel" – plus a great version of "Invitation". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful reissue – very heavy, almost Japanese-style – with a bonus booklet about Gigi Campi!)

Cutting, Late 80s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Jazzy J cuts it up nicely on the 1's and 2's, while Shameek rides the mic over the Cavern/White Lines bassline. The b-side's not much more than a booming 808 with some rhymes over top, but that's nothing to complain about. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Col Nolan Soul SyndicateWhatever It's Worth ... CD
CBS/Pacific Theatre Encore (Australia), 1968. New Copy ... $6.99
A fantastic funky set from the Sydney scene of the 60s – one of the coolest, cookingest combos to ever record in Australia at the time – and a group with a mix of mod and soul elements that reminds us of the best organ jazz recorded in London too! The group's led by the mighty Col Nolan – whose handling of the Hammond is wonderful – with lots of cool, compressed tones that work very well with the funky drums of John Sangster – a player that most folks know for his other records that feature vibes instead of drums! Sangster's great here kicking up a groove for the combo – and the tunes also feature plenty of tenor and flute from Col Loughnan, whose tight lines underscore all the best elements in the organ. There's a wonderful 60s nite club vibe running through the whole set – and titles include "Shades Of McSoul", "Sunny", "Blues For Madeline", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Rivera Mountain", and "Whatever It's Worth". Orrin EvansLiberation Blues ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2014. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A wonderful session from pianist Orrin Evans – one of the most richly talented players of his generation – always great, no matter what the setting! We've recently dug Evans in trio and larger group formats – but this set's got him cooking strongly with a quintet – a tight lineup that has Sean Jones on trumpet and JD Allen on tenor – but each dropping out a bit near the end to let Evans showcase his trio as well! The horns hold sway on most of the record, though – including the wonderful Liberation Blues Suite – which is penned for Dwayne Burno, and features both his own music and tunes by Evans as well. The set continues with great sounds that really forward the righteous vibe – and titles include "A Free Man", "Liberation Blues", "Juanita", "Devil Eyes", "Simply Green", "Anysha", "Meant To Shine", and "Mumbo Jumbo". Also includes a bonus encore – "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", with vocals by Joanna Pascale. CD

Makaya McCravenIn The Moment ... LP
International Anthem, 2015. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $59.99
A totally unique record from drummer Makaya McCraven – and a great one too! The set's built around improvised performances recorded over the period of a year – with some of Chicago's best underground jazz talents, including Matt Ulery on bass, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Jeff Parker on guitar, Justefan on vibes, Desean Jones on tenor, Tony Barba on tenor and electronics, and Josh Abrams on bass – and the performances are then edited down into these shorter, focused tracks that are really wonderful! The music is still quite live in its approach at most moments – and often given a very rhythmic pulse in the way it's put together, but never in any sort of hokey or heavy-handed remix way. The basslines are wonderful – full, round, and very modal – and titles include "The Jaunt", "Time Travel", "The Encore", "The Drop", "Finances", "Just Stay Right There", and "Three Fifths A Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(2nd pressing, with the Stewart Smith review on obi.)

Tangerine DreamOfficial Bootleg Series Vol 1 – Reims Cathedral, December 1974/Mozarthalle, Mannheim October 1976 (4CD set) ... CD
Reactive (UK), 1974/1976. New Copy 4CD ... $34.99
Tangerine Dream at their spacey 70s best – working here on two extended live performances that have a very trippy vibe! The work almost feels improvised at times – not in a noisy way, but very stretched out and open-ended – as there's not really any individual songs from the group, just these very extended passages of electronics that build and shift in really beautiful ways – that core essence of the group that was in its prime flower here! The package features four discs, with no individual tracks listed – two different performances recorded in Reims Cathedral in 1974, with fantastic spacey echo – and one long concert from Mannheim in 1976, with parts one and two of the set, and then two shorter "encore" tracks too. Box also includes a booklet and poster too! CD

Keith JarrettBudapest Concert ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2020. New Copy 2 CDs ... $24.99 29.99
Keith Jarrett in our favorite side of his talents – playing the long, improvised style that first made him a breakthrough artist on ECM in the 70s – and which still remains one of his most important contributions to the history of jazz! Even later years, Jarrett's sense of imagination on the keys is amazing – and here, you'll hear very few echoes of other improvisations – long tracks that show that Keith is always able to create spontaneously, at a level that few others can match – especially as he never goes too far outside, or seems to lose a sense of melody in his music. The work is divided up into shorter passages – the older Jarrett sometimes needs a break on the keys, but never in his cognition – and as with other concert recordings of this type, the encores are older standards – "Answer Me My Love" and "It's A Lonesome Old Town" – but both given a very free, open Keith Jarrett approach!
