Eddie Harris — Silver Cycles ... CD 6.99
Sweet silver cycles from Eddie Harris – a wonderful late 60s album that features lots of lines on the electrified Varitone saxophone, mixed with cool contributions from a shifting lineup of soulful musicians! The set's one of Eddie's real classics from the Atlantic years – completely inventive, but never in a gimmicky way – and a really great bridge between late 60s modes of funk, jazz, and soul – at the same level he'd serve up more famously in his collaborations with Les McCann! There's a lot of that same energy here, but the vibe is even tighter – and Harris really blows us away with his great arrangements, which get a slight bit of help from Arif Mardin. Other players include Melvin Jackson on bass, Seldon Powell on reeds, and Joe Zawinul on keyboards – and titles include "Silver Cycles", "Electric Ballad", "Little Bit", "Free At Last", "Coltrane's View", "Electric Salad", "1974 Blues", and "Smoke Signals".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Broadway label stereo pressing with CT suffix. Includes Atlantic inner sleeve. Cover has a small cutout hole, light wear, and an application wrinkle in back.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Eddie Harris

Plug Me In
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good+
Killer stuff – and an amazing album that not only showcases the varitone sax talents of Eddie Harris, but also features some fantastic arrangements by Chicago soul genius Charles Stepney! Harris plugs in right from the start – blowing an electric sax that comes up with some groovy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
This session shouldn't work, but it does – and beautifully! By all means, an album that includes Diz, Art Blakey, Monk, and Sonny Stitt playing together should be a first-rate snoozer, with hackneyed performances of common-denominator material that they can all get their hooks around – ... Coleman Hawkins & Frank Wess

Commodore Years – The Tenor Sax
Atlantic, 1940/1943/1950. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold

Charles Mingus

Changes Two
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint-
Key 70s work from Charles Mingus – an album that was recorded over the course of three days of creative activity at the end of 1974, but somehow split into two different albums under the Changes name! The lineup here is prime 70s Mingus – George Adams on tenor, Jack Walrath on trumpet, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Bird In A Silver Cage
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+
Sweet funky 70s work from Herbie Mann – one of his best records of the time, and a set that's got a stretched-out and slightly cosmic feel! The album's clearly the brainchild of writer/arranger/producer Sylvester Levay – who also plays keyboards on the session, and creates a groove ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Harris & Les McCann

Second Movement
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+
A massive batch of funky soul jazz – the Second Movement (to the first album Swiss Movement) of the collaboration of Eddie Harris and Les McCann! The vibe here is even freer, and hipper, than on the first set – with a host of long tracks that have Les really working the Fender Rhodes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buster Smith

Legendary Buster Smith
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+
A rare return to recording for alto player Buster Smith – captured here in a setting that's even sharper than before! Smith has roots that go back to the 30s bands of Bennie Moten and Andy Kirk – but he also was an early boss of Charlie Parker, who claimed to be strongly influenced by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Fortune

With Sound Reason
Atlantic, 1979. Very Good+
We love Sonny Fortune – because he always plays so great! Sonny started as more of an acoustic soul jazz player – but by the time of this session, he's working with a lot of electric backing, in a fusiony mode that should dampen his enthusiasm, but which only seems to spur him onto new ... Billy Cobham

Spectrum
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
A monstrous bit of jazzy fusion from the 70s – and the record that really put drummer Billy Cobham on the map – virtually creating his own sort of space between jazz, funk, and prog – thanks to the help of an all star lineup too! Cobham is tremendous on drums – and is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Waterbed
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint-
A sweet electric set from the great Herbie Mann – one of his best of the time! Like a number of his contemporaries recording jazz for Atlantic, Herbie had moved pretty firmly into a funky soul mode by the mid 70s – adding in lots of electric instrumentation and vocals to keep up with ... Atlantic, 1964. Very Good-
Beautiful work from the legendary Art Farmer – sounds from a time when the trumpeter was really coming into his own, and finding a way to carve out a special space for himself in modern jazz! The sounds here are fresh, but never overstated – blown with that compact mode that makes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Sketches Of Spain
Columbia, 1960. Near Mint-
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... LP, Vinyl record album
