Beautiful work from Wayne Shorter – a record that is as complicated as it is compelling, and which shows a real return to the soulful genius of his 70s work. Some of the tracks on the set features Shorter working in a smaller setting, while others add in strings, percussion, and assorted woodwinds – pushing the sound into rich arrays of colors and tones, yet still preserving Shorter's magical talent for a solo. One of the strongest aspects of the album is work on drums by Brian Blade – heavily swinging, but also with a degree of freedom – almost leaping off the kit with a modal sense, yet still holding things firmly in place overall. Titles include "Angola", "Serenata", "Sacajawea", "Capricorn II", and "Orbits".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Etcetera
Blue Note, 1965. Used
Don't let the title fool you, as the album's hardly an "etcetera" – not some run-on work from Wayne Shorter, but a real lost cooker from his 60s Blue Note years! The record's got a very sharp-edged quartet sound – a bit modern and edgey at times, with sharp tenor lines from ... CD

Verve, 2002. Used
One of the most adventurous records we've heard from Wayne Shorter in years – a collection of live recordings made in Europe in the summer of 2001, featuring a free-thinking group that includes Danilo Perez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. The sound here is almost ... CD

Skyline
Verve, 1999. Used
A relatively mellow recent effort from Bobby Hutcherson – one that has him playing both vibes and marimba, and going for a laidback style that allows plenty of spaces for tonal colors and shades of sound! The group's a quintet, with Kenny Garrett on alto, Geri Allen on piano, Christian ... CD

Nocturne
Verve, 2001. Used
A reall beautiful album from bassist Charlie Haden – one of his larger concept records, but one that's delivered with a nicely stripped-down vibe – in a moody late night spirit that really fits the title and the vintage image of Havana on the cover! At some level, the record's a love ... CD
