Insides Out

LP (Item 4806) Dakar, 1974 — Condition: Very Good-

A wonderful early record from Bohannon – and with a very different feel than usual! Although most of Bohannon's work from the time is up-tempo and funky, side two of this album has some amazing slow spacey cuts – done with a drum sound that's still quite hard, but just slower than usual, in a style that creates some nice stepping grooves that are augmented by some wild off-beat, out-of-tune piano work! Sounds like it shouldn't work, but it does – and the ultimate moment on the album is the amazing "Thoughts And Wishes", a cool instrumental that's been a major steppers track in Chicago for years. Side one is more in the usual Bohannon funk mode – and tracks on the album include "Disco Stomp", "Foot Stompin Music", "Love Is Fading", and "Happy Feeling".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pickett In The Pocket
RCA, 1974. Sealed
One of Wilson Pickett's overlooked 70s gems for RCA Records – material that's often overshadowed by his earlier fame on Atlantic, but which still has the singer very much at the top of his deep soul game! Stevie At The Beach
Tamla, 1964. Very Good+
Almost a precursor of California Motown in the 70s – given that the young Stevie Wonder spends a day at the beach! Gap Band IV
Total Experience, 1982. Very Good+ Gatefold
Perhaps the ultimate album for The Gap Band – and sure, it was a hit, but the record still sounds great today, and the constant sampling of some of the record has kept it fresh in the crates for years and years! Steady B

What's My Name
Jive, 1987. Good
Steady B's second major label album, but still in the mid 80s Pop Art style, proving you don't need much more than two turntables, a drum machine and a mic to make good hip hop. Okay, maybe some fly Cazals and Fila track suit. 12 tracks in all, including "The Hilltop", "Don't ... LP, Vinyl record album
