✨✧ BohannonBohannon ... LP
Dakar, 1975. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive amount of fast funk groovers from the mighty Hamilton Bohannon – just the kind of skittish, upbeat, and totally amazing tracks that have made him a legend for years! The sound is really stripped down – usually just bass, drums, and guitar – wrapped together in this groove that's super tight, but not slick at all – like someone had dug deep into the best resources of the funky 45 underground, then pushed them to the limit! The guitar work alone is completely amazing – razor-sharp perfection at a level that blows away any previous chicken scratch lines – and titles include "Can You Feel It", "Think Of Me", "The Funky Reggae", "The Bohannon Walk", "Bohannon's Beat Part 1", and "Gentle Breeze". ✨✧ BohannonStop & Go ... LP
Dakar, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer bit of early funk from the great Hamilton Bohannon – and quite possibly his greatest album ever – a really unique approach to funky rhythms, with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The album's got a slower funk sound than Bohannon's later disco groove a few years later – and the wonderful rhythms mix together scattershot drums with funky wah wah guitar, organ, and hard-plugging basslines – all in a blend that's pretty mindblowing not just for its instrumental dexterity, but also for the way it brings complex patterns together in a really hypnotic way! All cuts are instrumentals, save for a few chorus vocals – and players on the album include Wah Wah Watson, Ray Parker, Travis Biggs, and Mose Davis. Bohannon's on drums and percussion – and titles include "The Pimp Walk", "Stop & Go", "Getting to the Other Side", "It's Time For Peace", "Save Their Souls", and "Singing a Song for My Mother". ✨✧ BohannonBohannon Drive ... LP
Compleat, 1983. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Early 80s grooving from Bohannon – and still pretty darn great! As with all of his classics, Bohannon's got a clear ear for unusual rhythms – grooves that are compelling, but never complicated – and often repetitive in ways that cycle through subtle changes, much like the house music that would emerge in the wake of his big influence on the underground scene in Chicago. Tracks here are all long, and relatively electronic – and although they've got a few vocals, the main focus is clearly the groove! Titles include "Rock Your Body", "Wake Up", "Running From Your Love", "Enjoy Your Day", and "Do It Good". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hamilton BohannonBrunswick Complete Singles Collection ... CD
Brunswick/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer cuts from the legendary Hamilton Bohannon – an artist who first broke big on the Brunswick label with a really unique approach to a groove! Bohannon's cuts were always funky, but never straight funk – and instead, he had this minimalist way of layering together elements that was definitely a huge influence on later disco and club – but heard here in a style that's much more raw and down to earth! The package offers up 23 tracks that come from 45s that Bohannon did for the Brunswick label – some of which have different mixes, and all of which are razor-sharp groovers that are sure to please any fan of funk. Titles include "Run It On Down Mr DJ (parts 1 & 2)", "Come Winter", "Happy Feeling", "Gittin Off", "Have A Good Day", "Bohannon's Beat", "East Coast Groove", "The Fat Man", "Red Bone", "Truck Stop", "Stop & Go", "Save Their Souls", and "The Pimp Walk". ✨✧ George BohanonBoss Bossa Nova ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Very cool. This is one of the rare jazz LPs on Motown's short-lived Jazz Workshop subsidiary, and it's also one of the best records to appear on the imprint. Trombonist George Bohanon (who you've heard on countless Motown and soul sessions) shows the world his jazz chops in a groovy little combo with Kirk Lightsey on piano, and a very young Cecil McBee on bass! The group's augmented in parts by extra percussionists to open up the bossa sound a bit, and they play a set of material that's nearly all original, with compositions by Bohannon, McBee, and Lightsey. Tracks include "Simpatica", "Mioki", "El Rig", "Conmigo", and "El Rio". A tough one to find, too! CD

✨✧ Brass FeverTime Is Running Out ... LP
ABC, 1976. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Despite the name, and a concept that makes it seem like the record might be some throwaway disco set – the album's actually a good one, very much in the mode of the best uptempo soul on ABC at the time, but done without a vocalist. The album's arranged and conducted by McKinley Jackson, who was doing great work with Lamont Dozier on ABC – and the group features hip horn players like Pee Wee Ellis, George Bohannon, and Oscar Brashear, plus some ssolos by Lee Ritenour on guitar. Titles include "Funky Control", "Pressure Drop", "Dancing Machine", "Time Is Running Out", and "Boogie On Reggae Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Alice ColtraneSpiritual Eternal – The Complete Warner Brothers Recordings (Eternity/Radha Krsna Nama Sankirtana/Transcendence) ... CD
Warner/Real Gone, Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $25.99 26.98
Three great albums from Alice Coltrane – all late 70s albums for Warner Brothers that really show her taking off as both a solo performer and a spiritual force! First up is Eternity – seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Titles include "Spiritual Eternal", "Om Supreme", "Morning Workshop", "Wisdom Eye", and "Los Caballos". Radha Krsna Nama Saknirtana is pure spiritual loveliness from Alice, and a record that features a lot of additional playing by Indian musicians! Clearly, the Hari Krishnas have gotten to the lady here – as you can tell by the orange robe she's wearing on the cover, and the blank stare in her eyes – but that doesn't stop the album from being a nice one, filled with the soaring spiritualism of her best 70s work, and infused with a cross-cultural approach to jazz that makes for a wonderfully expansive sound. Tracks include "Om Namah Sivaya", "Hare Krishna", and "Govinda Jai Jai". Transcendence is a beautiful record from Alice Coltrane – a swirling mix of spiritual jazz and themes from Indian music! Alice plays organ, Fender Rhodes, and harp – building the sound as the album progresses, from simple airy strings to an earthier groove that features vocal refrains in unison with the keyboards, chanting away, over and over, stretching to the heavens in a cosmic groove! The record features a lot of variations on traditional Indian themes – including "Sivaya", "Ghana Nila", and "Bhaja Govindam" – plus the original tracks "Transcendence" and "Vrindavana Sanchara". CD

Creative Arts EnsembleOne Step Out (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Nimbus/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... About April 25, 2021
A great bit of work from the hip LA scene that centered around the Nimbus label at the end of the 70s – a collective who work together here with the same spiritual jazz modes you'd find on labels like Tribe or Strata East! The group features some bigger names from the scene, including some solo Nimbus acts – plus some other overlooked players – a lineup that includes Henry Franklin on bass, George Bohannon on trombone, Wilbert Hemsley on tenor, Dadesi Komolafe on flute, Jeff Clayton on baritone, and Gary Bias on alto and soprano sax. The album's also got some beautiful vocals from BJ Crowley – who co-leads the group, and sings out with a proud righteousness that recalls some of Dee Dee Bridgewater or Jean Carn's early early soul jazz recordings. The tracks are all long and spiraling numbers – never really "out", but in a free searching mode that's a perfect platform for the piano work of the other co-leader, Kaeef Ruzadun. Titles include "One Step Out", "Flashback Of Time", "All Praises Due", and "Stars In Lightyear Time". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Crown Heights AffairCrown Heights Affair ... LP
RCA, 1974. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Their first LP, and one that we like way better than anything else they ever did. The record's got a great bunch of hard funky cuts done at a fast tempo – without the throwaway disco sound of some of their other albums, and lots of sax and keyboards in the lead. A bit like early Bohannon at times – and with tracks that include "Streaking", "Super Rod", "Sex Trip", and "You Can't Bend My Super Rod". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby HutchersonHead On (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most sophisticated albums that Bobby Hutcherson recorded with reedman Harold Land – a very hip session that features the arrangements of piano player Todd Cochran – also known as Bayete for a pair of early 70s albums on Prestige! The sound here is more farther-reaching than before for the team of Hutcherson and Land – a deepening of the soulful spirits first cooked up on their earlier collaborations, stretched out to farther-reaching territory in the hands of Cochran's arrangements and compositions. The group's got a full sound too – with trumpet and flugelhorn from Oscar Brashear, trombone from George Bohannon, and added reeds from players who include Ernie Watts, Fred Jackson, and Charles Owens. Harold Land plays tenor and flute, Hutcherson vibes and marimba, and Cochran is on acoustic piano throughout – but the record also features some electric keys from William Henderson. Titles include the 3 part suite "At The Source", plus "Many Thousands Gone", "Clockwork Of The Spirits", and "Mtume". CD also features 3 great bonus tracks – the funky 17 minute "Hey Harold", plus "Jonathan" and "Togo Land". CD

Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This great little series gets even better – as it breaks past the early 80s focus of previous volumes, to include some great 70s gems as well! As before, the focus is less disco than you'd expect – more uptempo soul, which includes some 70s mellow movers and early 80s boogie tracks – all brought together with a great ear for a mostly under-discovered cut! The package features 20 tunes in all – and titles include "Don't You Wanna Make Love" by Carl Carlton, "Do You Really Love Me" by Bryan Loren, "Let's Start The Dance (rmx)" by Bohannon with Perri Johnson, "Friends" by Shalamar, "Keep On Doin Whatcha Doin (12" long version)" by Ty Karim & George Griffin, "Don't Stop" by Asso, "Taj Mahal" by Paulina DaCosta, "Wet My Whistle" by Midnight Star, "Pack Up Your Things & Get Out Of My Life" by TC Curtis, "Way Out" by Dynasty, "Dreamin" by Loleatta Holloway, "Let Love Shine" by Skyy, "Now I'm Fine" by Grey & Hanks, "Make It Up To Me In Love" by Odia Coates, "Half The Day's Gone" by Kenny Lynch, "Stand Up" by Delegation, and "Single Handed" by Haywoode. ✨✧ VariousPeace Chant Vol 4 – Raw, Deep, & Spiritual Jazz (with download) ... LP
Tramp (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection, and one that goes deep deep into the farther reaches of the spiritual scene in the 70s – tracks that are way more obscure than music on labels like Strata East or Impulse, and which really show an evolution of music ideas at the time! The core style is jazz, but there are also other elements at play too – and the tracks are a mix of instrumentals and vocals, the latter of which have an especially wonderful quality! Some of the tunes are nicely gentle, almost quiet in spirit – while others have a bolder, more political approach – and the mix of tunes throughout is very fresh, and maybe even better than the first collection in this series. Titles on vinyl volume 4 include "Untitled No 1" by Bohannon Trio, "Bo Ghana" by Lonnell Dantzler, "Ghana Cha" by Donn Preston Group, "Quernemoen" by Wayne Powell Octet, "Egg Nog" by Tommy Jones, "Attitude" by Organic Pulse Ensemble, "Brass Winds" by The Niambi Big Band, "Freedom" by Brother Yu Sextet, and "Ser Vi Tude" by James Scales & All Stars. ✨✧ Duke LumumbaJungle Funk ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Do yourself a favor, and buy this album – you won't be disappointed! The record is a gem all the way through – a really unique mixture of LA soul jazz and African rhythms, with a sound that's almost like Hugh Masekela sitting in with the Jazz Crusaders! Of course, there's a lot of Jazz Crusaders in the set – as Wilton Felder plays electric bass on the album, giving it a fantastic loping groove – but there's also plenty of unique albums on the record, especially its way of approaching the rhythms with a sly, syncopated groove that's immediately infectious! Duke's trumpet solos are great, and they're augmented by tenor work by Chester Washington and trombone by George Bohannon – all nicely grooving on the album's brilliant blend of jazzy tracks. Titles include "Jungle Funk", "Afrikaloo", "Akagruge", "Like It Is", "Mafam", and "Peace Brother". Somebody put this one on CD – and do us all a treat! LP, Vinyl record album
