❔
A wonderful mid 70s album by Chico Buarque – proof that he was still one heck of a songwriter, and a pretty decent singer, despite the fact that he'd grown a silly-looking moustache! The production's very nice, too – with that excellent compressed sound that was being used on some Brazilian vocal albums at the time, like work by Joao Donato. Includes the "O Que Sera", a sublime duet with Milton Nascimento that's one of the best versions we've ever heard of the song. Other tracks include "Vai Tabalhar Vagabundo", "Voce Vai Me Sequir", "Corrente", and "Passaredo".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some light wear & aging.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chico Buarque

Chico Buarque (1984)
Barclay/Philips (Brazil), 1984. Near Mint-
An overlooked gem from Chico's mid 80s period – a record filled with strong and subtle songs, often backed by some nicely jazz-tinged arrangements from Cristovao Bastos! The album's not as revolutionary as some of Chico's earlier records, but it more than makes up for that with an incredibly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chico Buarque

Chico Buarque (1978)
Philips (Brazil), 1978. Very Good
One of Chico's strongest albums of the late 70s – a masterful set of sophisticated tunes, recorded with some great guest help from Milton Nascimento, Zizi Possi, and Elba Ramalho! The album's got a slightly melancholy feel overall – not completely somber, but a slightly world-weary ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philips (Brazil), Late 60s/1970s/1980s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A very nicely packaged 2LP set that brings together some of Gal Costa's best work for Philips! The set spans her Tropicalia years, and moves into the 70s as Gal developed a style that was more sophisticated, and which eventually drew her more into the mainstream. Titles include "London ... Chico Buarque & Maria Bethania

Chico Buarque & Maria Bethania Ao Vivo
Philips (Brazil), 1975. Very Good+
A fantastic illustration of the live music tradition on Brazil – one that really arose on records during the 60s, and blossomed strongly on 70s records like this – which feel almost more like an event than a recorded document! The concert features a magnificent meeting of Chico Buarque ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elis Regina

Elis (1977)
Philips (Brazil), 1977. Near Mint-
Incredible! This album from 1977 shows Elis moving into an incredibly sophisticated vein – filled with influences from writers like Ivan Lins and Milton Nascimento, both of whom make an appearance on here, and backed by some incredible arrangements by Cesar Mariano and his CIA group. Caetano Veloso & Gilberto Gil

Tropicalia 2
Philips (Brazil), 1993. Near Mint-
Well, it's not the 60s anymore – but this is still a wonderful album that reunites Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil in the spirit of their Tropicalia years – done in a style that shows that creative invention was still alive in MPB during the 90s! There's echoes here of modes to come by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Baden Powell with Marcia

Show/Recital
Philips (Brazil), 1968. Very Good
A great album by Baden Powell – very much in the spirit of his Afro Sambas classic! The rare recording was done with Os Originais Do Samba, who join Baden on most of the record to really liven things up. The group add in vocals and heavy percussion to Baden's guitar – making tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maria Bethania

Passaro Proibido
Philips (Brazil), 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
An amazing 70s album from the legendary Maria Bethania – one of those records that's without precedent, and which comes together in an array of styles that's simply breathtaking! The sound here is a bit more focused and mature than some of Maria's earlier records, but the overall work is no ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elis Regina e Miele

Show Elis e Miele
Philips (Brazil), 1970. Very Good+
Great stuff! In a manner that's similar to (but better than) her live albums with Jair Rodriguez, Elis performs here in a great live show with the nutty Miele. The backing is by the Elis 5, led by Roberto Menescal, and they have a great groove that supports the material very nicely. Plus, the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quarteto Em Cy

Resistindo Ao Vivo
Philips (Brazil), 1977. Very Good
Wonderful stuff from the lovely Quarteto Em Cy – but aren't they always wonderful? The record's got a spare stripped-down instrumental style, and was recorded live with bossa backing – so that the girls' voices are right out front, free and clear, doing the main work of the songs. The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philips (Brazil), 1980. Very Good+
A really wonderful album from Quarteto Em Cy – the Brazilian vocal quartet who first rose to prominence during the bossa nova years, but soon moved into even more sophisticated material during the 70s! The approach of this set is telegraphed in the title – as the group take on songs ... LP, Vinyl record album
