❔

Chapter 2 of Gato's Latin American trilogy – and like the first, a set of tracks that features Gato's firey sax work engaging a complex series of Latin rhythms. Some of the tracks on the record feature Brazilian influences – from players like Helio Delmiro and Novelli – and one other track was recorded in Buenos Aires, like the tunes on the first LP. The sound is soulful and spiritual throughout – and the presence of the additional players really opens up Gato's style. Titles include "Para Nosotros", "Encontros", "Latino America", and "Marissea".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gato Barbieri

Caliente
A&M, 1976. Very Good+
One of Gato Barbieri's later recordings – but don't hold that against it! The set's a smoother effort than most of Gato's earlier work, but it's also still pretty darn soulful – done in a way that allows plenty of space for his raspy reed work on tenor to flow over the top of larger ... Gato Barbieri

Yesterdays
Flying Dutchman, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
A beautiful record from Gato Barbieri – almost a return to more traditional forms, but still graced with the searching, burning quality that made most of his early 70s sides so great! The tracks are all long and exploratory – and have Gato blowing with that tremendous tenor tone – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the most beautiful albums that Charlie Haden ever recorded – and if he only ever appeared on one record in his life, we'd still love him tremendously for this one! The album has a feel that's very much in keeping with both the "liberation" and "orchestra" in the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, Late 50s/1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
Impulse issue of one of Ra's best recordings from the late 50's. Ra plays organ and electric piano, and the band includes Gilmore, Pat Patrick, Marshall Allen, Ronnie Boykins, Art Hoyle, Phil Cohran, and Julian Priester. The group's also got an electric bass, which gives the tracks a nice bottom, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis Fuller

Soul Trombone
Impulse, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the best non-Blue Note albums from the early years of trombone giant Curtis Fuller – a definite cooker that more than lives up to its title! At his best, Fully often played his instrument with a style that was more like a trumpet than trombone – isolated notes, sharp sense of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp

Attica Blues
Impulse, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A classic of spiritual, soulful jazz – and one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums! The set was recorded in New York after a few free and festive years in Paris, and it's an amazing about-face that has Archie stepping into a world of righteous, full-on, political, and funky themes – the ... Pharoah Sanders

Karma
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Quite possibly the best-remembered album from Pharoah Sanders' legendary run at Impulse Records – a set that crossed over big, and sold to countless folks who might not have bought a jazz album this hip otherwise! The record was Sanders' first in the wake of Coltrane's passing – and it' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mc Coy plays Duke, with surprisingly great results – thanks to an expanded trio format that features lots of additional percussion! Gabor Szabo

More Sorcery
Impulse, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great record that's sort of a follow-up to Gabor's excellent Sorcerer LP – and like that one, features long tracks that have a spiralling modal feel that's much more serious, much more grooving, and a lot less campish than some of his other albums of the time. The album features a two-guita ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt & Paul Gonsalves

Salt & Pepper
Impulse, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
Head to head blowing from Sonny Sitt and Paul Gonsalves – just the kind of twin-horn performance that Stitt was famous for in his live battle days, and one that also reminds us that Gonsalves can be a very loose swinger when he wants to be! The tracks are all long, and played with the sort ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1962. Near Mint-
Stripped-down Count Basie from the start of the 60s – a great little set that has the Count working with some of the best players from his larger group, in a session of even more intimate small combo material! The sounds here echo the Basie groove of the earlier years, but the overall ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

For Members Only
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
Groovin' set of tracks that has the lady organist in two settings – one with her trio with Jimmy Cobb on drums, the other with a hard swingin' big band led by Oliver Nelson. She's great with Nelson's band, and swings in the same hard way that Jimmy Smith does in the same setting. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album
