Chapter Two – Hasta Siempre

LP (Item 30066) Impulse, 1973 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

Chapter 2 of Gato's Latin American trilogy – and like the first, a set of tracks that features Gato's firey sax work engaging a complex series of Latin rhythms. Some of the tracks on the record feature Brazilian influences – from players like Helio Delmiro and Novelli – and one other track was recorded in Buenos Aires, like the tunes on the first LP. The sound is soulful and spiritual throughout – and the presence of the additional players really opens up Gato's style. Titles include "Para Nosotros", "Encontros", "Latino America", and "Marissea".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Green label stereo/quad pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gato Barbieri

Yesterdays
Flying Dutchman, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A beautiful record from Gato Barbieri – almost a return to more traditional forms, but still graced with the searching, burning quality that made most of his early 70s sides so great! The tracks are all long and exploratory – and have Gato blowing with that tremendous tenor tone – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gato Barbieri

Obsession
Affinity (UK), 1967. Near Mint-
Pretty fierce stuff from Gato Barbieri – a firey avant session that's very much in the mode of his work for ESP, and his playing with Don Cherry in the late 60s. The set was recorded in Milan in 1967, with a trio that includes JF Jenny Clark on bass and Aldo Romano on drums – and Gato's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gato Barbieri

Fenix
Flying Dutchman, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Gato's best! The record's neither too out, nor too poppy – and it has Barbieri playing with that incredible raspy tone – and working over modal grooves laid down by a hip group that includes Lonnie Liston Smith on acoustic and electric pianos, Ron Carter on bass, Lennie White on ... Gato Barbieri

Under Fire
Flying Dutchman, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
An excellent set from the great Gato Barbieri – one of the gems from his earlier years on record, and an album that's very much in the best spirit of his sides for Impulse in the early 70s! There' definitely some Latin currents in the rhythm – not as strongly stated as on his Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
We love this record! Although Gato Barbieri has put out a few snoozers in his career, this amazing first chapter of his Latin venture for Impulse is an incredible record throughout – one of the greatest Impulse sessions of the 70s! Gato returns to his native Argentina for the session – ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at ... Paul Gonsalves

Tell It The Way It Is!
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Paul Gonsalves tells it the way it is – but in a hiply swinging sort of way that showcases his rising star as a leader in the 60s! The groove here is freed up from some of the earlier cliches in Gonsalves' work with larger groups – leaving a lot more room for his great sense of tone ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1965. Near Mint-
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! Excellent 2LP set that brings together material that was recorded during 'Trane's first live recording session at the Village Vanguard in 1961. Zoot Sims

Waiting Game
Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A rare gem from Zoot Sims – very different than any of his other albums! Shirley Scott

Girl Talk
Impulse, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet 60s grooves from Shirley Scott – really working the Hammond organ here with a wonderful sound – that warm, lean, soulful groove she hit perfectly at Impulse Records!
