On The Case

LP (Item 29858) Chess, 1970 — Condition: Very Good+
A full-blown, very righteous offering from Chess to the political cause of Operation Breadbasket! Tenorist Ben Branch leads the large gospel-tinged group – and sax player Gene Barge produces and plays, with a style that's very much in the Chess/Checker bag of the late 60s soul era. Most cuts have chorus vocals, but there are are a few instrumentals on the record. Titles include "Country Preacher", "We Shall Overcome", "I Wish I Knew", and "Nobody Knows".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cut corner, mild corner bend.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

One Dozen Berrys
Chess, 1958. Very Good+
One dozen "berrys", all of them great – the fresh fruits of the labors of a young Chuck Berry – heard here at his raw, early best! The sound here is stunning – a version of Chuck that gets way past any oldies cliches – and which reminds us that at the start, his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soulful Strings

Paint It Black
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
One of the better albums by this great Chicago soul studio group – but all of them are pretty nice! The great Richard Evans is still at the head of The Strings, and the album features solo work by Charles Stepney and Lennie Druss, in a cool breezy Chess/Cadet soul jazz kind of mode. The ... David Porter

Sweat & Love
Enterprise, 1973. Very Good+
A nice batch of grooves that has David Porter singing in a fairly funky Stax style, and recording with backup by the group Ebony Web. Aretha Franklin

Lady Soul
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good
One of Aretha Franklin's undisputed classics from her late 60s run on Atlantic Records – a seminal session that furthered her deep soul agenda with key backings from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd – both of whom handle the mix of rawness and polish that made Aretha so great at the time! A much funkier album than usual – a record that takes the group past their warmer sounds of the late 60s, into territory that's a lot grittier overall! Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good
Despite the title, this isn't really Aretha's greatest hits – as it includes no numbers from the Atlantic years – but it is a pretty good selection of Aretha's earlier work for Columbia, and features some real gems that should have been bigger hits than they were.
