✈
❔

A perfect example of the old adage that the funkier the band's name is, the less funky their music will be! Not that the group's really that bad or anything – they're just not the all-out party jam you'd expect from an ensemble with "ebony" and "funk" in their name. The groove is more smooth funky soul than anything else, and the record was produced by Carl Davis for his Chi-Sound imprint, and it's got a similar sound to some of the other groups on the label, like Manchild. Tracks include "Jive Du Du", "You Got Me Rushin", "Where You Lead", "Syncopated Madness", and "Watchin You, Watchin Me".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner and an unglued bottom seam.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mandrill

Solid
United Artists, 1975. Near Mint-
A tasty set from Mandrill – one of their first records away from the Polydor label, but every bit as great as later efforts for that company, especially Mandrilland. The overall sound is a bit smoother than some of their full-out funky albums – but in a way that really helps blend ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lea Roberts

Lady Lea

ZZ Hill

ZZ
United Artists, 1974. Near Mint-
Standout work from ZZ Hill – one of a few albums he cut for United Artists records in the early 70s, all of them great! The set's got a really tight tight feel – recorded at Fame Studios with a warm and lean style that pushes ZZ past the blusier roots of earlier sides, into a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brass Construction

Brass Construction 5
United Artists, 1979. Near Mint-
Brass Construction's fifth album, and the group's still grooving harder than most of their contemporaries! The legendary Randy Muller is still fully in charge here – serving up his trademark lean, mean arrangements that compress all elements of the music firmly on the beat – all in a ... Family Vibes

Strange Fruit
United Artists, 1972. Sealed Gatefold
Post-Tina, Ike Turner changed the name of his band to The Family Vibes, and put out a few nice records of mostly instrumental funk. Given that most of the band members were guys, he probably didn't push them around that much (and there were a lot of them, so they could probably gang up on him ... LP, Vinyl record album

The first of six "comeback" albums that this great Chicago soul singer cut during his second wave of recording during the late 70s! More Marv Johnson
United Artists, 1960. Good+
Early Detroit soul – the second LP by the great Marv Johnson, one of the first talents to be supervised by a young Berry Gordy! Dr John, The Night Tripper

Remedies
Atco, 1970. Very Good+
One of the records that made Dr John a legend back in the day – a set that steps off from New Orleans roots into a world of weird funk, tripped-out sounds, and lots and lots of super-heavy grooves! The album's got a nicely exploratory vibe – as the first side features shorter funky ... LP, Vinyl record album
