Sweet keyboard soul from Deodato – a set that steps off nicely from the strengths of his big hits on CTI, hitting a similarly flowing groove that's really great! The instrumentation here is a bit more expanded than before, but never in a way that buries the keyboards – and Deodato's right out front on a range of electric keys that get some great support from John Tropea's finely-honed work on guitar! Titles include "Havana Strut", "Whirlwinds", "West 42nd Street", and a nice cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again". And heck, even the album's version of Glen Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" manages to come off like a funk tune!  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

MCA, 1975. Near Mint-
Key proof that Deodato kept on making great records after leaving CTI Records – and in a way, the kind of set that allowed him a bit more freedom to grow than some of his contemporaries! The vibe here is a bit tighter than before, but in a way that makes many numbers even funkier – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marchin' On!
Strata East, 1976. Very Good+
A masterpiece of spiritual jazz – and completely unlike anything else the Heath Brothers ever recorded! The set's incredible – far more spiritual and father-reaching than even the best early 70s albums by reedman Jimmy Heath – and certainly different than the later, tighter ... LP, Vinyl record album
Free As The Wind
MCA, 1977. Near Mint-
The Crusaders are really going strong at this point – in near-hit status, almost acting as the Steely Dan of LA jazz. The sound is certainly slicker than before, but in a way that's actually pretty darn nice – as Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, and Larry Carlton come together ... LP, Vinyl record album
Home Cookin'
Blue Note, Early 60s. Very Good+
Classic work from Jimmy Smith – a smokin' quartet session from the early 60's, one that sports a rare appearance by Percy France on tenor on most of the tracks! France has a great raw sound that gives the session a nice little edge – and the rest of the group features Kenny Burrell on ... LP, Vinyl record album
House Of David
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
One of David Newman's grooviest albums of the 60s – a stripped-down set that features a quartet with Hammond and guitar – all in a vibe that's a bit more relaxed than some of Newman's other sessions for Atlantic! There's a gritty edge to the record – with organ by the obscure ... LP, Vinyl record album
Price You Got To Pay To Be Free
Capitol, 1970. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Fantastic work from the massive electric years of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of the group's last records to feature the keyboards of Joe Zawinul – and also one of the heaviest from the time! Juicy Lucy
Beehive, 1979. Sealed
A great return to form for guitarist Sal Salvador – a player who didn't always get that much time in the spotlight in the 70s, until a big wave of fresh exposure from the Beehive label! CTI, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Perfect Bob James electric arrangements make this LP by Stan one of his best for CTI! CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the best CTI albums from the early 70s – and one of Stanley Turrentine's funkiest records as well! The album's got a sharper edge than most other Turrentine albums of the time – a quality that goes beyond Stan's already soulful approach to the tenor, and which brings in some ... 1st Bassman
Vee Jay, 1961. Very Good
One of the most obscure sessions as a leader from the legendary bassman Paul Chambers – the crucial talent who really helped reinvent the role of his instrument in jazz during the 50s – and who left our planet all too soon!
