Suddenly The Blues

LP (Item 26963) Atlantic, 1962 — Condition: Very Good+
A record of incredible beauty from the great Leo Wright – and one that we'd never part with at all! Wright's one of those excellent players from the 60s who never really gets his due – largely because he was always hiding behind larger groups, and because he left the US in the decade for an extended stint in Europe. Still he cut some fantastic early work with both Dizzy Gillespie and Lalo Schifrin – and this album captures him right during the peak of that early period! The record features light lively backing from a quartet that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums – and some tracks have a beautifully groovy sound that's slightly bossa, slightly soul jazz. One of the best of these is Wright's great cover of "A Felicidade", but the record contains many other great moments, like "The Wiggler", "Tali", "Sassy Lady", and "Dionysis".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono red and purple label pressing. Cover has light wear and a name in pen.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

European Encounter
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
A uniquely European Encounter between pianist John Lewis and violinist Svend Asmussen – and one that makes for a different blend of instrumentation than you'd get on some of John Lewis' other albums as a leader! Clarence Wheeler

New Chicago Blues
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint-
No blues at all – despite the title – and a great set of tracks that showcases the southside Chicago tenor roots of Clarence Wheeler! The album's a bit different than the first two Wheeler albums for Atlantic – in that the group's slightly bigger, and more 70s electric overall ... LP, Vinyl record album

Passport

Hand Made
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+
The music's hand made, but the sound is heavily electric – thanks to some great production work that further pushes the spacier sound of the group! As with other Passport records, Klaus Doldinger's working here not just on saxes (which are great), but also on moog, electric piano, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jean Luc Ponty

Live
Atlantic, 1979. Near Mint-
The mighty Jean Luc Ponty in all his 70s glory – taking the violin from the realm of more staid European jazz roots, and using it to rival some of the bigger fusion soloists of the decade! Ponty's key here is the way he uses the electrified instrument almost like a keyboard – spinning ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Wallington

Knight Music
Atlantic, Late 50s. Sealed
Great work from bop legend George Wallington – one of the last records in an initial run of 50s strengths from the pianist – and a set that features some great original compositions of his own! The set's a bit unusual for Atlantic Records at the time – almost more of a Prestige ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+
A heck of a great little record – one that shouldn't work so well, but it does! For the set, Sonny Stitt's blowing in front of a larger brass section – and while the prospect of a Sonny Stitt big band record might not sound that great at first, this one really kicks, largely because of ... Atlantic, 1957. Very Good-
The MJQ always manage to sound especially great when working on music for film – and this album's a great illustration of that fact! Art Farmer

Interaction
Atlantic, 1963. Near Mint-
A magnificent set from the team of Art Farmer and Jim Hall – one of those rare pairings in jazz that somehow comes off sounding even way better than the sum of its parts – and that's saying a lot, given that the parts here are already pretty darn great! Farmer's flugelhorn and Hall's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy McGriff

Movin Upside The Blues
Jam, 1981. Near Mint-
Later work by McGriff – back in a straight soul jazz style, ala his earlier 60s work, cut perhaps in a mellower tone, like some of his more laidback albums for Solid State. Players include Harold Vick, Bill Easley, Bill Hardman, and Jimmy Ponder – and titles include "All Day ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Birth Of A Band Vol 2
Mercury (Japan), Late 50s. Near Mint-
A Japanese-only vinyl issue of outtakes from the Brith Of A Band sessions. The band is a great one all the way through, ... LP, Vinyl record album
