Suddenly The Blues

LP (Item 26963) Atlantic, 1962 — Condition: Very Good+
A record of incredible beauty from the great Leo Wright – and one that we'd never part with at all! Wright's one of those excellent players from the 60s who never really gets his due – largely because he was always hiding behind larger groups, and because he left the US in the decade for an extended stint in Europe. Still he cut some fantastic early work with both Dizzy Gillespie and Lalo Schifrin – and this album captures him right during the peak of that early period! The record features light lively backing from a quartet that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums – and some tracks have a beautifully groovy sound that's slightly bossa, slightly soul jazz. One of the best of these is Wright's great cover of "A Felicidade", but the record contains many other great moments, like "The Wiggler", "Tali", "Sassy Lady", and "Dionysis".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono red and purple label pressing. Cover has light wear and a name in pen.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Les McCann & Eddie Harris

Swiss Movement
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint-
The extremely successful union of two of Atlantic's biggest funky jazz stars, caught live in Switzerland, with the amazing Benny Bailey sitting in on trumpet. The tracks are long and funky, and are virtually a blueprint for pop soul jazz playing of the time – mixing slinky rhythms with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hubert Laws

Laws Of Jazz
Atlantic, 1964. Near Mint-
Massive early work from Hubert Laws – and a set that really shows some more the more Latin and soul sides of his talents! Tracks here have a tight punch throughout – with some great New York 60s rhythms that feature a young Chick (then called "Armando") Corea on piano, then a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Robin Kenyatta

Stompin' At The Savoy
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A great blend of older jazz styles and the sweet 70s funk of Robin Kenyatta – served up with a hip sort of sparkle overall! There's a few familiar jazz modes in here that definitely live up to the spirit of the title – but most of the record is more open, laidback, and somewhat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lennie Tristano

New Tristano
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
An incredible record by Lennie Tristano – one that features him playing solo piano, but in a way that's so inventive, so creative, so pyrotechnic, that Atlantic Records had to include text on the back cover saying "No use is made of multi-tracking, over-dubbing, or tape-speeding" ... Herbie Mann & The Bill Evans Trio

Nirvana
Atlantic, 1961. Very Good+
A sweet set of tracks that goes way beyond the usual Herbie Mann album! Herbie's playing with Bill Evans' trio that included Chuck Israels on bass and Paul Motian on drums – and the group's got a nice groove that, while not exactly modal, still hits a nice open-ended stretch that works well ... Milt Jackson

Plenty, Plenty Soul
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good
Plenty plenty soul here – as Milt Jackson's moving away from the Modern Jazz Quartet, and working with a great group of players that really expand his sound! The session's a bit like some of Milt's soul jazz work for Riverside and other labels – in that it's got rhythms, timings, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Konitz

Inside Hi-Fi
Atlantic, 1957. Near Mint-
A gem by Lee Konitz – one of his near-perfect 50s sessions for Atlantic! Lee's tone here is crisp, clear, and hauntingly fresh – modern, yet never academically so – and played with a dexterity that's incredible, but never too in love with itself to go too far. Key players on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Les McCann

Comment
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good
A very hip record of vocal tracks – done in the same sort of spiritual soul style that Les introduced on Roberta Flack's first album, and which was also showing up on some of Donny Hathaway's work for Atlantic. While the record is not on of McCann's funkiest, it more than makes up for that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Somethin' Else
Blue Note, 1958. Near Mint-
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing trumpet in a cool tone that's a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1955. Near Mint-
A record with Horace Silver on the cover, but a set that's really more of a Jazz Messengers date overall – as it features a smoking quintet that not only includes Art Blakey on drums and Doug Watkins on bass – but which also has some great frontline work from Hank Mobley on tenor and ... Sonny Criss

Crisscraft
Muse, 1975. Near Mint-
We never tire of the saxophone work of Sonny Criss – and this mid 70s gem is a perfect example of his brilliance! Sonny's sound on alto here is completely his own – raspily, soulful style that's really unique – and which draws strongly from Criss' rich life experience, including ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Wade In The Water
Cadet, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
Classic pop soul jazz from the inventor of the genre! Ramsey's funky piano is backed by some soulful arrangements handled by Richard Evans – in a really tight style that includes great percussion, electric bass, and an all-out kicking style that makes even the mellowest tunes groove! Evans ... LP, Vinyl record album
