Blue & Sentimental

LP (Item 25400) Atlantic, 1960 — Condition: Near Mint-
Probably the best-ever album by this obscure bluesy singer from Chicago! Jimmy Giuffre handled the arrangements, and the record has a bit more polish than some of her other albums. The tracks feature some very nice jazzy arrangements – with Jim Hall on guitar, Jimmy Jones on piano, and Harry Edison on trumpet. Lurlean's voice is deep and rich, with a sound that's a mix of Ella Fitzgerald and some of the icier singers, like Chris Connor or June Christy. Tracks include "Blue Turning Grey Over You", "Just Imagine", "My Kinda Love", "As Long As I Live", and "The Song Is You".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Green & blue label stereo pressing. Cover has a small chip at the opening, with some light wear, aging, and corner tear in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A real standout in Chris Connor's legendary run for Atlantic Records – and a unique double-length set that was almost her answer to some of the 2LP Verve songbook sessions from Ella Fitzgerald! Like those, this album's based upon the work of a single composer – and features key ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chris Connor & Maynard Ferguson

Double Exposure
Atlantic, 1960. Near Mint-
One of Chris Connor's standout albums for Atlantic Records – and a session that actually makes us really appreciate the presence of Maynard Ferguson! The album's got a bit more punch than some of Chris' other records for the label, and is a nice shift in mood after a series of sad, dreamy, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Carmen McRae

Portrait Of Carmen
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
An excellent album from Carmen McRae – one of her hippest records ever, and a great set of vocal gems that often gets overlooked! Arrangements are by Benny Carter, Shorty Rogers, and Oliver Nelson – and the album's got a swinging groovy style that pushes Carmen past her straighter jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good
One of the more obscure albums from the early years of Bobby Short – with accompaniment by either Aaron Bell on bass and Kenny Belding on drums, or Ismael Ugarte on bass and Johnny Cresci on drums. LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good+
A classic album of Cole Porter tunes – sung by Mabel Mercer with just a bit of tinkling piano in the background! The overall sound's a bit older than you might guess from the date of the record – a mode that takes most of the Porter tunes relatively straight, served up in Mercer's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good
A fantastic cover, and some great music to match – a key early classic in Chris Connor's late 50s run for Atlantic Records! As on her debut for the label, Ralph Burns handles the arrangements here – in a mode that's somewhat modern, but never too academically so – with just the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+
The Shadow Of Your Smile has Bobby working partially in that more adult 60s mode that was influenced strongly by changes in soundtrack styles – especially that 60s trend towards letting some serious younger songwriters pen important tunes for the titles. Bobby Darin

Inside Out
Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint-
LP...$9.99 14.99
A great little record by Bobby – recorded hot on the heels of his big hit recording of "If I Were A Carpenter", and with a surprising respect for Tim Hardin and a lot of the other young songwriters of the post-folk years. Keep in mind that Darin was really feeling his mortality at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1959. Very Good

A really classic set from vocalist Chris Connor – and one that's summed up perfectly in the "Sad Cafe" in the title! The album's got that blue, melancholy style that always worked best for Chris – a mode that's never too cool, but which has this laidback, almost ethereal ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1958. Sealed
In our opinion, this "comeback" material by Rushing was way better than his original work from the late 30s. He's got more of a sense of control here, and his approach to the material is extremely thoughtful, and always tinged with a good sense of jazz, making it swing a bit more than on ... Gloria Lynne

Gloria Lynne Calendar
Hi Fi/Everest, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
There's a pretty loose theme to this one – because although the album's supposed to have a "calender" concept, one in which Gloria runs through tunes for every month of the year, the adherence to this mode is a bit loose, and the choice of songs hardly reflects the months. Still, ... LP, Vinyl record album
