We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Brunswick, 1979. Very Good-
What can we say? This is a classic! The track has a monster roller skating groove that's been sampled more than a few times over the years – but which still sounds incredible on its own! Both parts are great – and even though the single's pretty darn long, you still never want it to ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Chocolate City, 1975. Very Good
A rare promo single featuring "Rigor Mortis" – one of Cameo's best tracks ever! The cut's got a funk vamp on the intro that you'll recognize from sampling instantly – and the whole thing's a nicely compressed joint with a full-on sound that the band rarely ever duplicated! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Sugar Hill, 1982. Near Mint-
Old school track from Sugar Hill's female trio that does not feature the classic Sugar Hill rhythm section, but instead uses a more synthetic sound, along the lines of maybe the Dazz Band. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Both the Puff Daddy & Ali Shaheed Muhamed mixes of this Faith Evans track hit hard, Puff Daddy's in the mid '90's hot radio style that blew him up so large and Muhamed's with that smooth Tribe vibe. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Capitol, 1981. Near Mint-
One of the all-time great jazzy soul tunes! Gene Dunlap cut this little gem with backing vocals by The Ridgeways for his 1981 album It's Just The Way I Feel – but the tune has outlasted the album for years, and is a big favorite with steppers even into this century. It's backed by the ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Virgin, 1991. Near Mint- (pic cover)
Frankie goes for the charts, but still with a very nice groove – and a deep bubbling under kind of sound that stays true to his Chicago roots! Still wish he would have used a real whistle, though! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Total Experience, 1982. Very Good+
An 80s groove classic! "Outstanding" has some wonderful funky grooves and a killer 80s sound that's complete with very fat bass pedal grooves, and some tight keyboard work! The hook's a monster, and this rare single offers up 2 versions not on the LP! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Sire, 1983. Very Good (pic cover)
What can we say? Despite the stupid appearance of the band, "White Horse" was a classic breakdance/electro track that crossed over so big it had kids in Kansas running out to by parachute pants and squares of linoleum to play along with the kids in the Bronx. Despite that runaway hit ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
